As I said in my previous post, if Hearns wants to fight on, it's his business. Providing he passes the required medicals and is deemed fit to fight he should be allowed to box. All boxers are taking a risk and it's a risk for them to decide they are willing to take or not.

Hearns won't be sat at home worrying about my life choices, so why should I worry about his?

Yeah, Hearns doesn't care what you're doing but then you haven't spent about 20 years treating him to some of the most exciting fights ever seen have you!!!. If you enjoy watching Hearns fights I don't really understand how you can not care about whether he ends up braindamaged or dead through carrying on too long!... its a very cold attitude to have mate!.

I don't think I'm being cold. My belief is that a man's destiny is in his own hands (pretty much). I'm sure Tommy would hold my comments with more respect than the patronising stuff everbody else is coming out with. Basically, what you are saying is that he is too stupid to make his own choices and needs guys like you, who don't know him, to decide what is best for him.

Sometimes people need to be saved from themselves... I never said Tommy is stupid but he is addicted to boxing, boxing is an addiction and people who are addicted to something often take it too far to the point where they damage themselves.
As for Tommy favouring your view to mine perhaps today he will but how about in 10 or 5 years time?.... go ask Wilfred Benitez if he's glad that he was persuaded to take on those last fights, go ask Greg Page, ...and think about Jerry QUarry who never recovered from the beating he took in his last fight (when he was about the same age that Hearns is now) and died at just 51... and up to that fight Jerry had seemed in better shape than Tommy is now.

I understand what you are saying, but it's out of admiration of what he achieved, and what he has given all of us as fans over the years, that there is an instinct to prevent situations like this occuring.

Tommy was one of my favourite fighters of the golden era of Hagler, Leonard et al. He was so exciting to watch, and had superlative skills, he was one of the guys who got me into boxing as a young kid, and I would hate to see him end up in a wheelchair.

Of course, it's his choice, and I know he doesn't really give a fornicate what happens to my life, but he just doesn't need to fight,

My guess is that he's been working with his son down at the Kronk, probably done some sparring with him, and got the bug again, he obviously cannot face facts that he's an old man now and needs to stay out of the ring.

hopefully he'll realise how badly gone he is when he fights and call it a day.

Reading things like this make me appreciate Marvin Hagler even more.

Hagler showed real class, by staying retired.

Went through a real rough patch too after quitting the ring, bout of alchoholism, and I believe a spate where he was abusing his wife, but came through it all and seems to be pretty content these days.

It was interesting though, when they asked him who he considered the man at middleweight one night when he was working as a pundit and he snapped back immediately 'I am!'

The interviewer though he was joking, but Marvin was deadly serious. He said that as Leonard didn't beat him in the ring, he still considered himself the undisputed champion.

I cannot recall any occasion recently where I've seen Hagler and Leonard sitting beside one another, and I suspect Hagler still has death in his eyes whenever he thinks of Leonard let alone sees him.

The issue shouldn't be whether Tommy gives a damn about us... ofcourse he doesn't care if I'm run over by a bus tomorrow as he doesn't know me and hasn't spent over half his life watching me fight as I have him.
From what I've heard of Hearns he is very good to people he does know... when James Shuler was killed in a motorbike crash just weeks after their fight Hearns gave the family the NABF belt he'd won off James... now thats a classy move of a real gentleman and basically I don't want to see a nice guy and great warrior get hurt.
You only need to look at the tragic end of Jerry Quarry to see what Thomas is risking by fighting again!.

I always liked Benn.

My gut feeling has always been, he is one of lifes good guys.

me too possibly my favourite british fighter of all time.

gotta go with the ones you grewq up with i guess and watched.

benn and lennox are right up there for me cos they have given me so many great memories and nights amongst mates.
