Yes, it was McCall's first title defense.

...goodness...he sure picked a tough opponent for his first defense...young....one of the hardest punchers ever...a bore in slugger and in the peak of his career.

...and more impressive than that, he won by a single point on 2 out of 3 scorecards...

..surely this puts maccall in the top three of all time greats.

I'm talking by heart, by I think that McCall-Holmes (WBC) was in the same card that Seldon - Hipp (WBA), another "classic".

Tyson -v- Boneclutcher Smith. :x

I feel asleep during that one (bear in mind it was 5am in the UK), only to wake with 10 seconds to go & see Tyson tottering around slightly, because Boneclutcher has apparently let go of Mike long enough to land a decent overhand Right that stunned Tyson to his boots! :o

I have often wondered if Bonecrusher had put a bet on himself tp last the distance in that fight.

Just a thought.

yeah that fight hhurt bonecrushers rep more than helped him. he thought if he survived, hed prob gain a lot of respect but he didnt cause he didn try to win. he would have gained more respect if he had been knocked out in 5 rounds while fighting his hardest the whole time.

i give more respect to tony tucker, who wasnt that afraid of tyson and caught him with a hard uppercut in the 1st roudn stunning tyson. at least tucker managed to make a fight out of it and didnt give tyson too much respect. i thought tucker did a good job.

I never saw it but have been told that Seldon vs Tucker was a poor fight.

My call would be Akinwande vs Welsh, Akinwande vs Zolkin,

Seldon vs Tucker actually was a good fight. both guys hurt in the 2nd round and they were brawling. That was on the McCall-HOlmes undercard.

Seldon vs Hipp was on the Tyson-McNeely undercard.

I think that shot broke Tuckers already injured hand.

Good call, I never thought of it like that.

There would have been great odds on lasting the distance against Iron Mike at the time, as he was so brutal.

Witherspoon/Page is the most boring heavyweight title fight that I can remember seeing. It really was just a maul, Witherspoon won because he walked forwards rather than backwards during the clinches.

The Ali -v- Frazier 2 clutchathon was pretty dull.

Ali should have been DQ'd.

...That fight was far from boring...and even farther from the most boring title fight, since it wasn't for the title...

Ali vs Jimmy Young - Ali I dont think even landed one solid punch on Young and Young just did the occasional pitty pat here and there.

Coetzee vs Tate - Boring fight with Coetzee tiring and Tate sweeping the championship rounds.

Tubbs vs Witherspoon.
Tyson vs Bonecrusher Smith
Holmes vs Rodregiez

It was very boring, although I do accept it wasn't for the world title.

The thread title is 'what was the most boring heavyweight title fight of all time'...even if you remove the word 'title'...Ali-Frazier II doesn't even come remotely close to the thread criteria...it had many exciting moments, it was a give and take fight like all three, Ali almost had Frazier out of there in the 2nd round...both of them had their moments...sure as hell wasn't my idea of boring...there must be 100's of fights more boring...just the fact that it was Ali vs. Frazier made it exciting to most...Ali had some boring fights...none of them against Joe Frazier...

Ali vs Jimmy Young. It was also one of the worst decisions in history.

It's just about difference of opinion, I'm afraid.

I'm from the school of thought that says it was dull. There are many fights duller than it, but a lot of them have been mentioned.

IMO, Ali held Frazier too much. Joe complained about this, but nothing happened.

The fight is only memorable because it was the long awaited rematch between the 2. Had it been a fight between 2 non-entities, it would be rightly labelled as a dull fight.

I have often mused on how the fight would have gone if the referee had not screwed up that night. Joe was always a bit of a slow starter and Ali although not a big puncher still had plenty of speed and snap in his punches. A knockdown would not a have surprised me, but could he have stopped Joe?

Joe had a warriors heart and would NEVER give up as he showed against the mighty clubbing fists of Foreman. If Ali had dropped him Joe would have gotten up I feel, but what if Ali forced him to the ropes and bedazzled Joe with a prolonged flurry of 15-20 unanswered punches? Would the referee had jumped in to save Joe?

Impossible to say but and interesting thought.

....and, as was keeping with his attitude in those days, ali accused the referee of racism. was the ref cortez? don't recall.
