I think Jim McDonnell is as much to blame as Danny. He lost control of his own corner in the Klitschko fight and should have ensured that Danny had overcame the demons of that night which he clearly by pulling out of this fight are still there

If Jim Mc Donnell is a good trainer than why doesn't he think his weight is a problem?

Found his statement on his official site.
A Statement to the Press from Danny Williams
First and foremost I would like to apologise to everyone involved that has been let down by me pulling out of the fight. I would like to state that I have not spoken to allegedly and the first I have heard about the comments made by allegedly about me, is through members of the press.
I have worked with Frank for majority of my boxing career and have the up most respect for him and therefore have no intention of turning this into a slagging match. However, what I will say is that I am surprised by Franks reaction as he has said to me in the past that if I didn't feel 100% fit to fighting that I should pull out, even if its at a minutes notice.
The reason behind my withdrawal from the fight is that I have the flu. I initially thought I had hay fever but it became apparent at the end of the week that it was much more than that, I took a load of cold remedies and felt a bit better, and hoped that I would feel 100% by the day of the fight, but my family felt I shouldn't go ahead and because I refused to withdraw from the fight, my wife called Frank and told him I had the flu.
I trained extremely hard for this fight, I was sparring with David Haye, and even brought Sherman Williams over from the US for sparring. I am extremely disappointed that I had to pull out of the fight considering I was the one that asked Frank for the fight with Skelton in the first place, but if I had gone ahead with the fight and anything had gone wrong everyone would have said if you weren't 100% fit you shouldn't have taken the fight!
I understand Frank has been calling me a bottle job. But those who follow my career will know that I won the British Title while fighting with a dislocated shoulder, came back against Mike Tyson and also challanged the world's best heavyweight Vitali Klitscko. So do you think I'm really scared of Matt Skelton.
Lastly, I would still love to fight Skelton but that's really up to Frank!
Danny Williams
EDITOR'S NOTE: Danny is responding to reports in the press that allegedly no longer wishes to promote him.
Says he's suprised by Warren's reaction. I don't blame Warren and Skelton for being pissed.

It's a shame but I can't blame him for pulling out if he's not feeling well. It's easy to point fingers and diminish someone but I would of done the same thing.
At least we get to see Hopkins / Taylor tonight live on Sky Sports FOR FREE

It's a natural British instinct to try and think the best of everyone, but 20st 3lb followed by an on-the-day pull-out with the trusty 'flu? I'd like to give Williams the benefit of the doubt but he can't have hardly trained for this fight, and frankly he's a fat sack of turd for pulling out of this first ITV1 card and the biggest British HW fight in years.

good for Krence. Did well and put up a good show at 12 hour's notice
Skelton is a really really poor fighter who will get found out soon, but a decent guy "Mark had more downstairs than Danny" and he was dead right about the impact of dropping out of a prime time ITV show.
Williams, may well have been ill, but once you weigh in.............................
Fat piece of shit

Very good effort from Krence, glad he was chuffed with it also and not to down. Skelton won't be British champ for long (if a Danny match fails to materialise I can see him vacanting now) maybe Krence will get a rematch with Gammar for the vacant title sometime.

Mark Krence is my new boxing hero!
12 hours notice & puts up a gutsy performance like that! Williams should hang his head in shame.
He is a big fat lazy bum, who's not even man enough to phone allegedly personally; he got his wife to do it!

Well done to Krence for having a go at short notice. And well done to Matt Skelton for taking care of business after such a big irritation.
One other thing: see how Allegedly is auto placed before Mr. Warren, is there any way to ban 'Danny', 'Audley' and 'Calzaghe' from being typed?

I'm glad you've noticed that.
I thought I was going mad. I tried to correct it, but it wasn't there to correct!

observations:
1. if you have real flu, you knho about it, flu is fornicator you cant get out bed, your glands swell up and you shiver and shake like a mofo. You cant trian and you certinaly wouldnt be able to spar. ITS VERY UNUSUAL TO GET FLU IN JULY.
what danny may have is a bit of a mild cold.
2. The doctors would be able to spot you have a flu virus due to the inflammed glands and your general health.
3. surely its good practice to keep you trainer informed and your promoter as well if you have any inkling you may not be in shape. Dont leave it til the last minute and be surprised everyone is pissed off.
4. you dont get your wife to fone up to excuse you from games, this isnt being at school, show some respect and be a man and pick the phone up yourself.
5. 20 stone 3 is not a 6 ft one heavywieght prime fighting weight. anything but, it is obvious he was out of shape and far too heavy.
6. Yes we did watch you heart it out as a young man against potter, when you did something extraordinary Danny, but we also aw you fold mentally against Sam and the fearsome beating you took against Vitali could have left you scarred. We also know aobut you shitting it in the past and being in tears etc etc, excuse us if we think you may have crapped yoursefl cos you havent trained and pulled out fearing another beating and the end of the road.
I like Danny always have but on this occasion there are too many things pointing toward the fact that he has 1. not trained and 2. mentally is not there.
Dont bullshit the public, the boxers or the promters anymore Danny, thanks for the good times but its time to retire.

In addition to Danny's role in his self-inflicted demise, I agree with the comments that his trainer Jim McDonnel doesn't appear to come out with much credit. McDonnel is quoted in yesterday's Sunday Telegraph as saying "Danny was in great shape but took a couple of days out of the gym last week which I wasn't aware of." How can a trainer not be aware of his fighter (especially one as emotionally fragile as Danny Williams) bunking off training in the week before an important fight. McDonnel should have had Danny under 24 hour guard!

I don't understand why McDonnell has allowed Danny to eat himself stupid over the last few years. Surely there has to come a point where you say, "Look lardarse, either you get yourself in proper fighting shape, or you find a new trainer, because this is a fornicating joke."
I know that the trainer cannot actually do the training for their fighter, but the shape a fighter turns up in is a reflection of their trainer.

Williams has done this before, I remember he pulled out of a fight with Packheiser at less than a days notice with no real reason behind it.
Its obvious he wasnt in shape coming in that heavy.
He was saying a couple months ago he was going to drop some weight and come in around 18 stone - instead he weights in at over 20 stone.
He needs to retire. I've never really rated him as highly as everyone else seems to, and now it seems his discipline is on the slide letting his weight balloon that much. He hasnt been in 100% fighting shape since he fought Keith Long. I dont care how much training and stamina someone has 19-20 stone at his height is not a well conditioned fighter.
