It depend on which "Hall of Fame" you're talking about...and if they have a "character clause" amoung the selection criteria.

If the HOF in question has guidelines regarding conduct outside the ring...sportsmanship in the ring...etc. then there are some real questions to be looked at.

If not...like the NFL where LT breezed in despite his well documented off the field lapses...then Mike deserves to breeze in too.

Who determines character?? Even before his sentence of public service, Tyson always spent time working with inner city kids and being a mentor. He also donated lots of money to charity, and spent as much time as anybody doing charity work. Grabbing his crotch and cursing at women sold plenty of tickets to the Lewis fight. He was punished for his actions against Holyfield, and spent a lot of time in prison for a questionable rape charge. I'm sure that a vast number of his detractors have more questionable character than he does. If a clown points his finger at me like he's gonna shoot me, I might knock his butt out too. If a dude in traffic calls me everything but a child of God, trying to provoke me to put a hurt on him, I may snap too. You might also. If a beauty queen comes to your hotel room at two in the morning, you may assume you're getting some booty, too. If Mitch Green calls you a sissy in the McDonalds, you might put a knot on his forhead too. A lot of it is normal stuff, but since it's him, and he's a celebrity, all of a sudden he's got awful character. Most people don't know him well enough to know if his character is bad or not. TV tells you what they want to tell you.

Mike has been of the nicest, most genuine and caring people in boxing I have ever come in contact with.

However...I repeat...

Botha...Norris...Holyfield...McBride...all in the ring.

Indiana rape conviction...etc. etc. etc. outside the ring.

As a fan of Tyson the fighter...and an admirer of the man I've met and spoken with...that's as nicely as I can put it.

If the HOF in question (there are several...typical of boxing) has a character clause or behavior guidelines...there are questions to be considered.

There was a good article on this very same subject in this months Ring magazine.

The author of the piece was not a Tyson fan judging by his description of Tyson but he summed it up by saying if Ingemar Johansson gets in then how does Tyson not...he was the most recognised heavyweight for all the time he boxed.

Yes. Carlos Monzon murdered his girl friend by throwing her out a hotel window. He's in the Hall of Fame. The International Boxing Hall of Fame is full of thugs, muggers, murderers, fight fixers, drug addicts, pimps, dirty fighters and racists. I'm not aware of others who were convicted of rape but who are we kidding? It isn't a wholesome group. Tyson dominated the division for a few years and supplied us with a lot of cool fight films. That qualifies him.

Fame.....all you have to be is well known, Tyson is likely the second or perhaps the best name recognition boxing has ever had. That's all it takes. It's not the hall of "good guys" or the hall of "greatest skills"

Just the hall of Fame, and Mike Tyson has had his ticket punched for this ride for quite some time.

He is a sure bet shoo in.
