Have to disagree with the "cricket is for toffs" statement. I played it at school and so did most other schools in our borough. If we didn't have so much open space then maybe things would have been different, but none of the schools or cricket clubs had any 'toffs'. Tennis is the sport for rich kids.

I think that it says a lot for cricket when the tickets for the ashes were sold out within hours of going on sale across the whole country.

Flintoff deserves to win it this year and many of the England team actually have personalities, unlike the brain dead footballers. The ashes has made the summer one to remember.

Rooney can win the "teach kids to behave like pricks" award.

england beat a past it aussie team to win the ashes and if it hadn't been for the weather would probably have lost that last test match.

don't get me wrong it was great what england done and they deserve big credit.

but liverpool were given no chance by virtually everyone and pulled it off. :P before the ashes started, everyone thought it was well up for grabs.

Flintoff's going to win the sports personality award easily and it will be good to see someone who is a great role model to kids win it.

Team award has to go to Liverpool (although I'm a bit biased), the quality of the teams we (sorry, they) beat was incredible and we had to do it with a squad which wasn't exactly brimming with top class players.

Overseas personality will be either Shane Warne or Justin Gatlin.

Sorry Hattons not in that league yet and if he beats Maussa - SO WHAT - if he beat Mayweather, Zoo and Judah - then YES until then its not the same league as Flintoff and Ratcliffe

Gatlins not even the fastest over 100m or 200m this year. Asafa Powells 9.77 is more historical than winning the 100+200 in his absense.

Well, as great as Liverpool winning the Champions League was, at the back of my mind is the fact that we finished 5th in the league, and 37 points behind Chelsea at that. We can't claim to be a great team when that happens. Yes, Liverpool saw off Leverkusen, Juve and Chelsea, and then won the greatest ever European Cup final against Milan. And it was against the odds.

But the England Cricket team took on a team who had not only dominated the world scene for over a decade, but were considered one of, if not the, best team ever to play the game. England were not given a chance beforehand: The English Pundits felt 3-1 was the most likely scoreline, the Aussies thought 5-0.

Liverpool were brilliant, no doubt. But does anyone truly consider them the team to beat now? Of course not. The Aussies have been the team to beat for almost two decades, but after the summer the whole world recognises that, whilst Australia are ranked number 1, England are the team you have to beat if you want to be considered the best. Nobody feels that way about the 'Pool.

England's achievement is more significant, especially when you consider the impact they had: Flintoff and Co. put cricket on the front pages for the first time in years, and also managed to knock the footy off the back pages. Flintoff, Pietersen and Hoggard made kids want to play cricket this summer.

And finally, whilst the Champions League final was probably the best European Cup final in the history of UEFA, the Edgebaston test was the greatest game of cricket in over 120 years. The Ashes series this summer was perhaps the greatest sporting summer you'll ever see. Any other summer, maybe Liverpool could win. But not this year. Cricket overwhelmed everything this summer.

Liverpool deserve the award for best team, and I think they will get it.

Ellen Macarthur SHOULD win it outright though, Flintoff didn't win the ashes on his own you know.

I live in Ellen Macarthur's home town, and she is starting to get on my nerves, yep it was great that she sailed that high tech ship round the world, but so could alot of other people. Maybe its because she gets so much exposure down here, that i'm sick of hearing about it

if u actually look at when the 2 raced this season. i believe powell never actually beat gatlin.

gatlin is the king of the sprinters until powell turns up at the majors and delivers.

states: i like a bit of cricket and what england did was superb. i also agree that the impact was terrific and i certainly wouldn't begrudge em team of the year.

however liverpool's achievement can't be sneezed at either. it was also a very big deal at the time and even got a word from the prime minister if you'll remember. :P

Unfortunatly we don't have an over abundence of sport stars down here, and sailing is one of the main sports in the home town.
