I have no doubt that he was better than Machen(to hell with Revolver). And I think saying your confident he is a top 75 is a conservative statement.

lastarza did not give rocky a hard time in 2nd fight. he outboxed marcianmo early but marciano gave him a horrible beating breaking his arms and blood vessels and knocking him out in 11 when rocky was up on scorecards.
Absolutely he did. I have tapes of the old boxing program that Marciano hosted with a celebrity guest. They would play old fights and the rock would give commentary. A few of his own fights were included on the show, the second Lastraza fight being one of them. It was evident in the fight the Lastraza was ging Marciano trouble, and the Rock admitted as much himself on the program.
lastarza never beat many top contenders becauyse the big sluggers like valdez, baker, walls, neuhas, etc they didnt want to fight lastarza. they felt lastarza would make them look bad because of his style and speed.
You're just overhyping him because it makes the rock look better, since he gave Marciano a hard time.

thats ridiculous, i watched lastarza on tape and he impressed me, i also did a lot of research on him. he impressed me more than layne who as much more highly regarded at the time than lastarza and marciano brutally knocked him out. he was a tough contender 53-3 when he fought rocky and had good boxing skills, great defensive counterpuncher and had good speed. no he was not a great ehavyweight, but a definte solid respectable contender. like i said i rate him on par with eddie machen.

lastarza did give marciano mucht trouble in 2nd bout in early rounds, but marciano dominated and won ever round after the 6th round. marciano was AHEAD at the time of the knockout, and BROKE LASTARZAS ARMS AND CHIPPED BONES IN HIS ELBOWS REQUIRING 6 DIFFERENT SURGERIES.
he also knocked lastarza down in 11th and finished him offf

now if thats not called a beating, then i dont know what is.

chipped bones in his elbow yes, and some ruptured blood vessels in his forearm that required surgery. But he didnt not have broken arms.

I believe that had not Rocky been around to ruin careers and clean up the division, that Lastarza, Vingo, and Layne would have been great, but Rocky ruined Lastarza and Layne, and ended Vingo's career by causing a brain hemorrhage that made Vingo hospitalized in critical condition.

Good thread even though it has fundamentally changed topics along the way.

Sorry BB49 but no way does Tyson just walk through a peak Jimmy Young. If the likes of Mitch Green, James Tillis, James Smith and Tony Tucker can take a peak Tyson the distance then so does Jimmy Young who was a better boxer than all those fighters that I listed.

Thanks KO

Too many people remember Tyson blowing away fighters and forget those who took him the distance. Tyson was a formidable fighter and I think he can win this one but no way is it a blow out.

I think Louis was at or very near his peak when his lost to Max. The fact he was maybe overconfident and understrained doesn't mean hw wasn't at his peak. It just means he didn't perform to the best of his current abilities.
Louis was only 21 and had been professional for only 2 years (or maybe even less I'd have to check) Nowadays if a prospect is 27 we say he's young, he can develop etc.

Louis filled out more, got more experience, and became a much smarter and better fighter years after the Schmeling loss. That was NOT Joe's prime . .
