Unlike most gigantic guys, he's pretty well proportioned, he's not at all lanky.
I always thought Michael Jordan would have made a pretty good boxer, he was incredibly athletic for his size.
So is Audley Harrison.... doesn't mean he could fight.

I can see it being a horrible fight with Valuev picking up a dodgy decision and as he has the same promoter as Ottke the title wont get out of Germany for years......beats Ruiz having it though :)

What if Ruiz did what he tried with Toney?
We all know Toney's a natural fighter so that didn't work but what if he boxes Valuev?
Someone fast will beat the beast. Etienne suprisingly was able to push him back a bit too so maybe Ruiz could hold him a bit even if weighs 80 pounds more.

tricky fight, one in which I favour Valuev to win mainly because he is on home soil.
Which leads me to my main point. What is Don King doing letting all his guys fight in germany, does he not care about their belts (santos) and not feel that the german promoters are using their home status to conjure up wins (valuev beating donald). Surely the big Don man doesnt like whats going on over there with all his fighters, maybe we might see the surprise and Ruiz pulling off a dodgy decision on the cards.
I know, not likely, but ....

Do you remember the parts of the fight that weren't Etienne pushing Valuev back?

Yeah, he hit Etienne in the back of the head and just pushed more with those Jabs than actually stinging him.
Lacks strength for his size!

Doubt he lacks strength, he used to be a hammer thrower or shot putter or some such thing...
However he lacks snap on his shots, and certainly isn't a hard hitter for his size.

shot putter.... he lacks explosive power.... he has plenty of brute force

The best shot putters have both. It's fairly explosive at the top level, but I don't know how good he was....
You have to traverse the ring pretty fast to be a top shot putter.

Most likely because options on the "german" fighters if they win, ie Ottke after the Mitchell fights. I think Don King have options on 3 or of Valuevs next fights (I wonder how long Ruiz under contract?)

You beat me to it Freiheit. King hasn't got a single Marketable heavyweight outside of Toney, so he's prepared to sacrifice Brewster, for options on his opponent who probably has a far bigger following in germany than Brewster has even in his own back yard. He's been trying to knock Byrd off for ages by arranging a fight for him in Germany, so he could get options on Wlad.

It's true. But how good a shot putter was Valuev?
Ruiz grapples and leans and tires his opponents out. He's in trouble if he tries that with someone who's got 80 pounds and half a foot on him.

Mostly just seems to push with punches more than hurt them.
Probably doesn't lack so much strength, just for a 320 pounder he should be stronger, but weight doesn't always equal strength.

Valuev isnt that explosive, which is presumably why he gave up....
The top shot putters have probably the most explosive power of any athlete...bar weightlifters
The top guys can standing long jump 3m plus at 120kg....
The most explosive guy was probably Ulf Timmerman from East Germany.... not an overly big guy but boy was he quick across the circle...
launched the 7.26kg ball over 23 meters...

More to the point, strength has little to do with punchpower in many cases.
Who do you reckon is stronger, Corralles or Hatton? However, Corralles is by far the more hurtful puncher, certainly in terms of one shot.

Hearns would be lucky to bench press 60kg when he was welterweight but the fornicator hit like a mule.....

In spite of the fact that Ruiz seems to find a way of winning so often I think this fight is a tough call, but I just can't see his mauling style cutting any ice against someone so tall. I'll have a bet on Valuev on points or late stoppage.

Yep, and Corralles is about as close as our era has to Hearns in my humble opinion, not as good of course, nor as powerful, but he's build much the same. How the fornicate he ever made Feather is beyond me.
