Topper i depends what you are looking for, personalyl I wouldt live in some of the areas suggested here if you paid me but Im sure that works both ways.

Id say most of the suggested areas so far are too far in for a man used to the countryside.

I prefer to go a bit further out say zone 4 and have good train connections (its 20 mins to charing x from where i live 12 mins to london bridge).

Its differrent strokes for different folks mate to be honest though i tend to find most areas in Zone 2/3 are total shitholes most of the time.

Of course there are exceptions but you look at the tube map, it dont make pretty reading, Dalston, Hackney 7 sisters, Finsbury, in the north, Camberwell, Peckham, Lewisham , of course there are exceptions to this rule.

But to say somewhere like Brixton or hackney is a nicer area than say Blackheath Chsilehurst or Greenwich is complete tosh to me, cos it aint, there might be more going on but personally I like a bit of green grass around me, and preferbaly no hyperdermics in that grass.

The added bonus is if you want to get out of London for the weekend you dfont have half as much traffic/ distance getting out of town

like i say Im more of a suburbs man myself and commute half an hour.

I live in between Grove Park and Lee near Blackheath, not too much infrastructure about but if I want a night out I stay in town otherwise I tend to enjoy my mates and get pissed in the garden/ get a 5 quid cab the blackheath/ bromley


I have also lived in this area Blackheath and now Mottingham for the last 10 years. Blackeath is nice (although a bit expensive). But like J says you can quite easily get to nice places for a beer or shopping really quickly and the trains ae regular into town.

North London is the shittiest part fornicate all there...

SE is the worst. Plumstead, Dartford, Charlton, the list goes on...

Picking Primrose Hill is a good choice - however saying you think Stoke Newington isn't that bad?? Geezer, that's where I work - are you sure it aint that bad??

Mr Topper - Hackney may be a bit cheaper, but I wouldn't live there personally. Having said that, I would much rather be north of the river than the south..... but then having said THAT - everyone south of the river hates the north, and vice versa. It really just depends on where you feel comfortable and can make ends meet.

North-East London may be a bit of a dive, but i feel more comfortable there than I do elsewhere within the capital.

ps: I work in Hackney, the N16 region - if you are looking at any places there feel free to e-mail me and ask an opinion on the general area, as there are "better" and "worse" places within the borough. I'd be happy to lend my opinion for you, for what it is worth.

all parts of london have good and bad areas tho.

I live in SE London myself J, but the bad areas in SE London are worse than anything I've seen anywhere else in London, Charlton and Plumstead must be the most depressing areas I've ever lived in.

It's no susprise those areas are a hotbed for recruitment for the BNP, If I lived there I'd be looking for someone to blame for the shittiness of my life.

True about North though, it is a bit bleak around Edmonton, Tottenham etc, though I lived in Finsbury Park and quite liked it.

and so do I mate, i lived in edomonton and enfield for years in the ealy 90's used to go clubbing to all the shittiest places on earth in the early 90's remember Labyrinth in Dalston or the bass box in edmonton, I can assure these areas are grimmer than peckham etc and thats saying something.

neother are particualrly desirable areas to live which is why I said you get good and bad you cant just say the south east is a shithole or the north is shithole, thats Londond for ya, Upstiars / downstairs in one street tower hamlets the other.

Ladbroke Grove is a great area - right in the middle of London and a great mix of people, bars, clubs, restaurant etc. Not expensive either.

yerah its nice up that way, warwick avenue etc, i like it up there bit twee but very nice.

Born and bred in London, I got out at the first opporunity.

In truth I might have stayed had I been able to buy a house in Hampstead but I don't play football for a Premiership side.

But I work with several people who want to move into London, seduced by the bright lights, cosmopolitan feel and great nights out.

I do miss the choice of restaurants and pubs, that kind of thing but going into town these days does my head in, too many people!

NW London is reasonable and not too bad, West Hampstead, Swiss Cottage, could go out to Hendon, Edgware, Stanmore, all good rail links and relatively peaceful.
