I love Hearns but he just didnt have the durability to beat either Basilo or Gavilan..
At welterweight? Why wouldnt he? Alot lesser fighters than Hearns survived against those two and even beat them.
to dismiss Gavilan as a slugger with one punch is simply ludicrous... watch his fights!...
I have watched a few Gavilan fights and in no way did I intend to diminsh him. I only pointed out aspects of his style that would be detrimental to him in a fight with Hearns.
Fullmer stopped Basilo when Carmen was 30+ and coming to the end of his career... this was about a decade on from Carmens first world title fight and the first fight was very close till Carmen run out of gas. Fullmer would have beaten Hearns even quicker...
Basillio was 32 years old and fought as well as he ever could have against Fullmer. Robinson was the only good middleweight Basillio beat and he only did it because Ray was shot. If Hearns caught Fullmer with the type of combinations he landed on Hagler in that first round of their fight it would probably end up as a first round ko for Hearns. Hagler was stronger, faster, tougher, had a better chin and was all around better than Fullmer. I'm not saying Hearns would definitly beat Fullmer but Fullmer is far from a lock to win that fight.
What lesser fighters beat them then?... have you even seen any of Basilos and Gavilans fights??....

Lesser fighter than Hearns doesnt mean a bad fighter. For example Billy Graham was not a better fighter than Hearns and he outboxed both of them. A welter Hearns freakish size, skill and crippling power would be more than a handful for either of those two. Both of them would have to land alot of punches to stop Hearns; no way could either outbox him. Neither of them possessed Leonards combination of speed and power.

And yes Ive seen several fight films of Basillio and Galivan. Ive also seen Hearns fight, and my opinion is that he would have beaten them both.

*Both are as tough as granite.

*Would 12 or 15 rounds make any difference in the outcome?
Chavez won his first title at 130, Basilio at 147. Last week you were comparing Roy Jones and Ray Leonard.

Please compare guys in the same weight class

Well actually it wasnt me that did the Ray Leanord Jones thing, and I completely explained why I chose this matchup...... If you read my reasoning and then make a comment I'll be glad to engage you on that subject. I'll say again I chose the "Boxrec" classification system.

As weak or as strong as that is...you can make your judgement.

But you don't have your facts straight at this time.

Speed isn't everything, durability and strength is also important and both Basilo and Gavilan were far stronger and more durable than Hearns... also Gavilan was not exactly slow... he had very fast hands and threw loads of punches... Hearns wouldn't have lived with his pace over 15 rounds. As for Graham.... he was far more durable than Hearns...

Basillio at 147 is a machine! Probably one of the finest conditioned boxers of all time. taking nothing away from JCC but I think that Basillio could bully JCC and work effecctivly enough to earn a close Dec win.

I 100% AGREE :TU: :TU: :TU:

I cannot see DeLaHoya nor Pipino Cuevas nor Tito Trinidad beating Basilio. Hey, I pick Basilio over Hearns too...What a fighter!!!
