Joe has earned well, thats for sure... but the Veit fight was a career high purse was it not??

Anyway, financially £1 million to fight Woods is a very good deal indeed..
winnable fight and a IBF title to go with it...

then fight Tarver if he beats Hopkins or try lure Hopkins out of retirement if he beats Tarver ;-)

I'd agree with that, the Woods fight, Calzaghe would be quite a heavy favourite, and a win would give him one of the 3 main titles, then a fight with the winner of Tarver v Hopkins.

I just hope Joe gets the right fights now, I don't want to see him stagnate

if the offer is a genuine, no strings attached £1million for the IBF and Joe DOESNT accept, then you would have to say he is being mis-advised....

Perhaps someone advising him has Ulterior motives in the fight not happening

1 million to fight Woods is pretty low for Calzaghe at this time.

It's great that Clinton's one of the champs at light Heavy but what pisses me off is that he isn't hardly well known in this country outside of Sheffield probably because of lack of proper Tv coverage.

Would probably be more of a name with a better promotor. Hatton's hardly getting any mentions either since leaving SN for FA.

BoxingChat: You intimated that a purse of £1 million would be a paycut for Calzaghe, now you seem to be saying you don't know whether that is true or not......

Million pounds not Dollars.

He's shown he's worth more than that and FA are thinking they could make it a PPV when Joe's with SN!

Millions will watch him on ITV while only a couple hundred thousand barely would watch on Sky Box Office and plus he's contracted to fight on ITV with SN.

Plus he'll get American coverage on Showtime with ITV coverage here with more vievwers and the advertising revenue that ITV would get could make Joe hell of a lot more than 1 million pounds.

Plus SN know how to sell a fight better than FA.

Plus 18 defences and 9 years as champion too.

Yeah but thats in WBO terms. In real terms that equates to about 4/5 acceptable defences. Dont believe the hype!

most long reigning champions have plenty of less than scintillating names to go with the good ones. and that goes for larry holmes, wilfredo gomez (more than one of his foes apparently had made up records), hopkins, jones. after all isn't that what boxing's about - 4 top guys in each division holding a title, all of whom try to prove their superiority not by fighting each other, but by beating on far lesser men. at least calzaghe has won a unification, winning every round (i know, before anyone starts, some of those guys did win unifications)

Calzaghe can be awful to watch vs lesser foes. I was ready to write him off until the Lacy fight was made. How do SN allow us to forget how good he is?

But put him in a big occasion fight and he's very exciting - whether he throws correct punches or not. SN are going to take their time - see who wins WW-Taylor, see who is dethroned at light heavyweight - and then calculate the best move. So in the meantime we obviously have to put up with a crap fight or two. Even though more ppl will want to fight him now, they will also want more money and many of the top fighters are already occupied with something else - i mean how does Woods fit Calzaghe in between DeLisle and Johnson? Winky is fighting Taylor in 2 months. Beyer is having his next easy fight soon.

Max, Joe won't make a million for fighting TBA (as no one else has stepped forward) on ITV no matter how many people tune in. On the other hand as part of a PPV promotion it is conceivable that he will make that much money and then some. How much did Ricky make for his last PPV fight against a relatively unknown Coloumbian. The job of a promoter/manager/allegedly FW is to get the best deal financial and otherwise for his fighter, the Woods fight is the best deal but it seems that pride is impinging upon Frank. He should make the PPV deal and make Jope some money, in 5 years Joe will have greatly reduced earning capabilities and SN will not, they should do right by him now.

As for selling a fighter, SN have had years of experience yet after 18 defences Joe was a virtual unknown outside boxing forums, until he beat Lacy and that still won't get him a million. The reason the Jones fight was only briefly mooted is that Jones, even in this faded state, would require big money and SN don't have it to splash about.

You are obviously a big Joe fan but don't let it cloud your judgement as to his one-fight earning capabilities. When Audley Harrison turned pro (with no title defences) he was a bigger name than Joe and on what £100,000 a fight? Fast forward to a stinking defeat and Audley is still as big a name as Joe. Joe is a good fighter but he is not charismatic or lucid enough to win universal public love and acclaim, many hard-core fans (myself included) still find him pretty horrible to watch most of the time and the general public will get excited about this one fight (Lacy) then fade when they realise he is fighting a nothing fight in June.

It sounds like SN are using his recent fleeting (IMO) fame to fill their coffers with a "homecoming" fight. Maybe that Sky fiasco hit them harder than we think?
I reckon if they put a fight together in Wales at a big venue in the Summer, they could probably make Joe a million, primarily from getting a big gate. Audley was on 100k a fight, but he was a novice professional

I agree though that Joe is not charismatic, and he will fade into the background pretty fast unless they capitalise on his performance against Lacy.

If I were a promoter, what I would do is get Joe a defence against a decent opponent, though nobody special lined up for summer, based in a big venue is Wales, (when does the world cup finish though) and ensure that it is screened prime time in the UK, to build the fan base for the next fight. 2 Million watched the last one, but they could get 10 million in prime time.

Afraid those rumours are true, but hey this is a business and Manfredo's fame in America brings $$$$$ so can't blame them for wanting to make the fight.

Sky have taken Woods v De Lisle though

let's give him a bit of a break. one comedown fight after a pretty exceptional win. i'm sure a big fight will be coming round the corner. it's not like anyone's going to put a young gun like Bute or Andrade in with him next. Looking at what happened to Lacy, it'd be a fool move to stick one of those in with JC. this time of the year, with most of the top names busy, it's hard to line up anyone of worth.

too often Calzaghe/Warren's career moves have been the equivalent of a cold bath. if any of that purposeless post Mitchell-pre Lacy stuff happens again, then Calzaghe will deserve to fade. But we should be pleased that names such as Winky, Taylor, Beyer and Woods are being mentioned. If he can fight one of those in Sept/Oct/Nov then all will be well. until then i'm afraid we all have to wait and see

Agreed. He's talking two big fights in the next two years, which is fine but also hints at a couple of fillers as well. The next fight after Lacy was always going to be a bit average and I'm not sure (with the exception of Kessler, who I really doubt he'll fight) who's ready to actually go out in the time frames he's talking about.

when you think about it, how the hell did they manage to wait Three Years between big fights (Mithell - Lacy)? It is quite shocking considering Calzaghe's ability. But I get the impression that part of that was to do with Calzaghe's personal troubles and also that arrogant side of him where he thinks everyone's beneath him at s/m. He seems to have his head screwed on now, and i think he may have been sobered somewhat by the pre fight chit chat pre Ashira - where he had to account for why nobody's heard of him, lol

Outside of the 2 other champions at the weight, there isn't alot out there for him to pick from for a July 8th date.

Maybe Jackson Chanet the EBU champ might be in the pick, he's a decent enough boxer, who's unbeaten and would give some competition.
Or the winner of Froch v Magee.

further developments on the Calzaghe-Woods. Rawling wrote that there's going to be none of this Sky Sports PPV nonsense (and thus, no $1m offer by Hobson). Warren has made it clear that he, not Hobson, is doing the offering - and has offered Woods £400,000 for the eve of the world cup final on ITV.

well, that would rule out Winy/Taylor

after all that staying up till the early hrs of the morning watching him fight vs a hyped loudmouth, let's have this nice British rivalry vs a foe of more substance, at a normal f_ucking time!

Well at least it would give the Welsh fans something to cheer, only for 24hrs though, as England lift the world cup the next day :TU:

Terrence, how do you know Joe will fight TBA though?

PPV money is good but it would be better on terrestrial with more viewers which will equal more advertising space and revenue at prime time.

Being a Joe fan doesn't cloud me judgement. PPV is bullshit in this country when it comes to boxing as not enough watch. He would make more on ITV fighting Woods than on Sky.

Woods is not a big name in this country though either even though he should be.

He must be a massive name if his manager can turn down £400k much, much more than he got for even Roy Jones.
