Might be a meritocracy in principle but in reality it's more like a nepotocracy. Aside from the old boys at the top, we have too many middle-managers with no balls, heading reams of yes-men. The West, in general, is teeming with souless pudenda shuffling paper in utter, utter meaningless-ness, all to furnish a selection in the latest IKEA catalogue and keep up the facade they actually have a worthwhile purpose each morning. The vast majority blank it out because they either don't know the answer, or can't summon the gumption to do anything about it, content to live in denial. I'd never heard of it before, but that Indian system sounds sound, to be honest. :)

Things like this happen in every country, Were there are poor people with drug habits there will always be crime. Thank god im 6'3 and 285 pounds else i would be targeted by these scum bags every time i venture out to night spots.

in my view it is not the fault of the thatcher govt that things are now as they are. i was a fierce opponent of that administration at the time and my views of that era and its hunger for greed has not changed. but the fault lies with the wave of new thinking then coming into psychology and child development some from america but much from europe and mostly from france. this is the neo marxist phenomena known as post modernism which wrecked all notions of good common sense when it came to child rearing and destroyed our previous well founded ideas on what was wrong and right. the new attitude bred an arena where the law had to understand more and punish less. parenting was corrupted and many of us were confused by how to bring up our children - the situation persists today. i have only given a brief outline of one area of the insidious nature of post modernism, but we have all been affected by it for better or worse since it arrived in our society during the thatcher era.
it is worth studying.

I'm going to sound like an old fart now but I think much of the problem has to do with the breakdown of the family, and the proliferation of one parent families... I'm not saying this is the only reason but its a link in the chain...

I have often thought that a couple of generations of families with both/the only parent working combined with the vast rise in "ways to occupy your mind without having to interact with other people" is responsible as much as anything for today's bizarre, imaginationless, apathetic children (and I'm a 22 year old)

my view (briefly) is that post modernism was originated by french neo marxist intellectuals who, frustrated by their historical lack of influence on western society, decided to alter that society by attempting to change the way language is used. this proved incredibly effective; university doctorates began to be awarded to theses that were full of post modern nonsense. relativism and the idea that any one work was as good as another became prevalent in teaching. political correctness is an example of this rubbish. i myself gained a psychology degree which looking back now was loaded with postmodernist mumbo jumbo.
all i can say is that i hope boxing judges do not use postmodern criteria when deciding a match.

Damn this is an interesting thread. Totally agree about the breakdown of the family and it's negative effects on society. Since 1980 in the States we've had a generation of kids grow up as the products of daycare, and no matter how much anyone wants to talk about the necessity of such institutions, bottom line is that it's resulted in countless instances of parents no longer knowing there own children. "We never knew Johnny was a Satanist or that Sally had been talking about suicide since she was 12" are the extreme examples, but generally speaking, after 5 years of working with teenagers in the 90's I was shocked to find out what kids never told there own parents. Sadly over here it just continues to get worse, as the latest fad is to medicate kids for any and all problems.
