Without a doubt Fenech won the first fight Vs Nelson (and Nelson even admitted as much in several interviews since......Azumah was always a class act).
The decision in Las Vegas was just wrong and without a doubt it seem to take some steam out of Fenech....(hell he moved up in weight...was taking on the HOF in Azumah....flew to the States...was an underdog going in...and simply went to war with Azumah for 12 full rounds ...taking it to him for the full 3 minutes of each round.....nearly KO'ing him in the 12th.......only to get completely jobbed.
With that said.....give Azumah all the credit in the world....he went into the Lion's den Down Under and beat Fenech clearly in the rematch.
Both are HOF...and all time greats. Plain and simple
Fenech's best weight was between 122-126......at 130 that favored Azumah slightly.
I will say this.....the "fire" that I had seen in so many of Fenech's fights (prior to his rematch with Azumah)....the sheer anger he walked into the ring with each and every time.....simply wasn't there going into the Azumah fight......
That isn't an excuse.....just reality.
Again, both men are true warriors and true HOF'ers.
