I think Oscar knows that, and may well find a way to negotiate his way out of that one.
dlh didn't fight tszyu, tszyu went and got himself knocked out by vince phillips though i reckon dlh would ahve moved up for whitaker and quartey anyway
i don't think dlh - mayweather ever happens. dlh said he won't work with anone except mayweather sr and mayweather sr has said he won't train someone to KO his own son. so unless dlh and floyd senior have a nasty faling out i doubt it ever happens - considering it's a risky fight for an older dlh & that he can make a bomb fighting older faded men like rematches with quartey, vargas, mosley III on top of that

It wasn't exactly whaling away. De La Hoya produced a very controlled performance, showing an impressive command of the ring and improved strength, I see no reason to suspect his possible decline could have been masked because of the opponent. He was razor sharp.
No way Mayweather isn't getting hit in this fight.

Worth remembering in all this that Tito looked sensational againt Mayorga and was spanked by Winky.... So as Kilburn suggests perhaps that may be a step to far for Oscar....
I havent seen enough of Mayweather to give an opinion on how he would match up with Oscar.... Oscar is so used to outspeeding his opponents it would be interesting to see how he reacts when faced with a quicker opponent...
back to the original question, oscar has earned the right to fight anyone 154lbs and under....

Oscar doesn't need Mayweather, that's my point, it's possibly the biggest money fight out there, aside from the winner of Winky v Taylor, but he can still earn a fortune in a 'this is my last fight' type promotion against many other fighters. The American Hispanic community will come out in their droves and buy up the PPV, whilst a lot of Mexicans will buy it just to urinate and gob all over the screen one last time.

Surely whether or not Oscar needs the fight is beside the point? He didn't need to fight Hopkins but the chance to fight for the undisputed middleweight title was too much of a challenge to turn away from.
De La Hoya will definitely want to fight Mayweather because he's the best fighter out there according to most, I don't think there is much more to it than that.
