Davey Pearl's a good referee. I'm sure he took note of Hearns legs' giving out from just a push from Leonard before the beginning of the big onslaught in the 13th. Obviously in the 50's or even 60's the bout would have gone on longer, but by 81, things had changed.

Hearns was a pretty awesome boxer / puncher himself at that point. The fact that Leonard DID solve the Hearns riddle and batter him into a stoppage defeat is what really counts.

I do think Hearns deserved the W in the rematch though. But both were a little overdone by then.

It looked a correct stoppage to me at the time and still does. Hearns was gone. Howard Cosell started ranting it was premature but after the replays he changed his mind. Not that Howard actually knew much about what was happening in a ring. Great interviewer though. And, as been said in here 1000 times, very good at adding gravitas (is that the correct word, boxbuzz?) to a fight.

gravitas....weight.....enhanced importance.......I concur.....
