I was thinking some kind of security business, or something!

Yes I think he owns some buisnesses, said something like he didnt need to fight again after the Hearns fight but that he missed it which is why he made those sporadic comebacks... also said he was good friends with Duran....

Have you seen his son fight?... he seems quite useful...
Pipino is indeed one of the most popular fighters of all time in Mexico. Very beloved for his extremely entertaining style win or lose and his very humble attitude. I've heard he's doing alright for himself. As for his son, i've seen him live once and seen about 2 of his fights. He seems to have good power and potential. I remember hearing somebody tell me he lost a fight but it I guess that person was incorrect. His defense needs a bit of work, (like most novices) but so far he's doing well. My source said he was stopped but as I said it may have been incorrect. Very good man from what i've heard, I hope he's doing well and I hope his son can reach his potential.

Looking at the boxrec records it seems Cuevas son is still undefeated in 7 with 5 koes... his names Gerrado Cuevas... but I think he fights under 'Pipino jr' name... I have one of his fights and he does look good, very young but the power seems to be there though obviously it is early days... I don't know how old he is but only looks about 18 or 19. He has his fathers poker face when he is fighting which is quite amusing to see in a way....

I scanned over a bunch of issues of Ring, circa 1995-2004, but did not find the article about Cuevas, but I'm missing several issues in that span. I was thinking that there was an article about Cuevas in an issue of the very short run of Bert Sugar's Fight Game. It seems like that was the magazine that I recall seeing the article talking about Cuevas in, but I sold all of my issues of that mag.

It may have been in a KO mag... it was in the last 2 years or so... I generally only buy 'new' magazines if they have profiles of 'oldtimers' there was another one with an article on Yaqui Lopez which was also great.... I'll have to hunt them down... they're probably in my loft!...

His name I believe is actually Jose Gerardo Cuevas if I remember correctly so he does have his father's first name. He also is called Pipino Jr. in the latin boxing scene. I believe he was 18 last time I saw him. He definetely does have his father's face, what my sources say is that he suffered a broken nose and was stopped. That may have been sparring though as sometimes things are exaggerated and turned into rumors. However I do seem to remember him having a very crooked nose. I still wish him the best of luck and i'm sure he'll only get better. He has potential but it's too early to tell how much. I hope he makes it because he seems like a good guy just like his father and he's not exactly getting all the media attention like other Jr.'s. I wonder what his amateur record is if any. Cuevas will always be underrated because of his career post Hearns but not by Mexican fight fans. :TU:

I've got the issue with Yaqui Lopez, that was in Ring during the past couple of years.

The Cuevas story must be in a Ring mag then, probably!... I'll try and track it down... trouble with having so many books and mags is that sometimes it takes me weeks to find certain articles!... :x

I use to do the same thing everytime I wanted to find a certain thing I would have to go through magazine after magazine until I lucked up and found what I was looking for, but a couple of years ago I started indexing all of my Ring mags and I plan on doing the same with all my other mags after I finish with Ring...It has become very, very useful to use as I have done them each in 9 seperate notebooks by decade. Right now I have made it up thru 1972, so now I just need to finish the 1973 thru 2006.

Good idea!, I'm spending a lot of my time now though on transfering my fights from tape to dvd and thats quite a job in itself. I am planning on collecting together articles and records from mags, especially my Boxing News... so for instance I'll have all the Gilbert Odd articles on oldtimers etc all together!... will probably take me a couple of years though!.
Boxing News has some great records on fighters... been looking at the record of Len Wickwar today who had about 500 recorded fights!...whew! :box:

Duh!... Wickwar was fighting long before Ayala was even thought of... had they fought I think it would have been Ayala who would have been 'beat down'... :TU:
