Good call on O'Grady - Kenty. Sean made the adjustment going in of moving his head after he punched. The result was a title Belt.kick asner wrote:I knew if I mentioned Marvin Johnson poeple would start to figure out I'm from Indiana.Decagon wrote:Interesting choices. Sanchez-Lopez I is the only of your fights that I might have come up with, myself. I could probably do a good guess of your age and location from it. Were you at any of those fights?kick asner wrote:Jim Watt-Howard Davis
Vilamar Ferrnandez-Alexis Argello first fight
Salvador Sanchez-Danny Lopez both fights
Eddie Gregory-Marvin Johnson
Alan Minter-Vito Antufurmo second fight
Toney Sibson-Dwight DavidsonWas not at any of those fights but one good thing about the eighties is they always had big name fighters on television almost every week. Sean Ogrady-Hilmer Kenty you could probably ad.

Not sure, but I remember after seeing him dismantle Lopez I really believed that Monroe could make some serious waves. He had earlier lost to LeDoux but had come back nicely against the capable Lynn Ball and Lopez, and really looked pretty good until he ran into Page. Page really exposed his major weakness, which was a total lack of upper body movement. He was a sitting duck for Page’s shots, and Greg was really on for that fight. In retrospect, LeDoux had exposed the same flaws, but I think the network (NBC I think) was really trying to build him up, and many including myself looked past his flaws.Nile4000 wrote:The sad thing, too, is that he never recovered after that.Is he still living? The Great John L wrote:What a complete blowout. Still, with a different trainer maybe he could have become at least a top 10 HW. Do you know if he changed trainers after the LeDoux or Page fights?
Ward vs Gatti - great tactics...ok, let's stand here and fire punches nonstop for 10 rounds.
Hagler vs Hearns - ok, we run around the ring firing nonstop, and eventually one of us will fall.
In actuality, one of my favorite tactical fights is Barrera vs Hamed.
Nas was looking for 1 punch KOs since coming to the US to fight. Barrera knew that and gave him no chance to land any one big punch. Hamed refused to throw combinations, and Barrera jsut kept his hands up and kept punching going forward. He also didn't buy into any of Nas' shit.

Can't help thinking that it was Hamed's fault though, Dec. He seemed to start believing his own hype and stopped learning. He wasn't that old or that ringworn. He couldn't land the show stopper and looked like he'd lost his compass.Decagon wrote:Hamed was years past his prime against Barerra. We're not exactly talking Leonard-Benitez here.
I really never expected such a feebele ffort from Hamed.
Hamed years past his prime???? Why because he retired afterwards? He was dead in the middle of his prime. His problem was he never learned how to box and was overrated to begin with. Hell hes only thirty two now. Back then everyone thought it was Barrera who was past his prime and being lead as a lamb to the slaughter. In fact I remember thinking myself it was another in a long line of setups for Hamed much like Bungu and Sanchez. And while Im ranting the only reason Hamed went into that fight undefeated was because Dale Grable's dumb ass was to chicken to DQ him for bodyslamming Cesar Soto in Detroit in front of one of the largest arab crowds assembled at a sporting event in the USA.
...i wish it existed on tape somewhere....because as i watched harold johnson decision doug jones i realized i was watching one of the great tactical exhibitions i'd ever seen...and even that long ago it was after my years of seeing a lot of excellent boxing.
someone asked for reasons why we'd define a fight as such. i this case, johnson was in against a good fighter in doug jones. but johnson had an answer for ever move jones made...johnson was known for his ability to block a punch with his hand and then turn that same move into a counter punch.....but in this one he made it into an art form. superb boxing...good sharp hitting...a masterpiece. when willie pastrano was told he was matched with johnson he referred to just this aspect of johnson's skills and admitted he was afraid. (As it turned out, the fix was in and pastrano just ran for fifteen rounds and johnson was robbed)
Marciano/walcott I....jersey joe made moves that i've never seen before or since.....fantastic....and right in the eye of the hurricane.
Glad to see the listing of buddy mcgirt . the fight mentioned was him at his best...and at that time he was one of the great great fighters...just not always great when he had to be.
