I'm sure, not only for political ramifications.

A grudge.
Two fighters of evenly matched ability.
Styles that blend together well.

I think for a true rivalry the guys have to have met at least 3 times, each guy has to have won at least once, and they both have to have been highly regarded.

That is pretty much what I think of when I think of a great rivalry.
One that I would add is Griffith-Benevenuti

And what would be the best adjective to describe each of these rivalties?
Ali-Frazier? Robinson-LaMotta? Gatti-Ward?

True, lot's of back and forth here. But ever since barry has adopted his new, relaxed styule, this looks almost like "no contest"...

Decagon wrote:Duran-DeJesus HAS to be up there. Those two hated each other. It was well over 100 degrees when they fought their rematch, but the two went at it with fire and passion that made the very Sun itself look for shade behind a barrel cactus. With each fight, Duran got better and better, until in their rubber match - Duran, right there, was perhaps the greatest fighter who had ever lived. He had the two-fisted fury and talent of a great fighter's first career, with the head of a fighter well into his second career. He was Ali against Sonny Liston and Ali against George Foreman; Sugar Ray Robinson against Kid Gavilan and Sugar Ray Robinson against Gene Fullmer.

All that hatred evaporated one day. Esteban DeJesus didn't have a very good post-boxing life. He ended up in jail, dying of AIDS. Untreated, lying in his own filth, he received a visitor one day, the very man who had hated him with the passion of 100 Suns, the very man who was his arch-nemesis, Roberto Duran. Then, over 17 years ago, less than nine years removed from his final title challenge, at the age of 37, he finally succumbed to the AIDS virus.
wasnt deJesus the first man to put duran down, was it the first fight where duran ended up on his arse in the first round?

Duran was on the canvas in round 1 of the first and second fights. From the same punch, too.
didnt know that, cheers dec.
duran was probably in his prime then so props to DeJesus who wasnt the type of fella to just roll over by the sounds of it.

Duran v DeJesus II was on live TV on Saturday afternoon. We used to get some absolutely amazing fights back in the 70's. I remember DeJesus dropping Duran in the 1st, but Duran was in complete control by the 3rd. DeJesus was down in 7th, I believe, and it looked like it was over, but as Duran came in for the kill, DeJesus caught him with a wicked counter, that bought him a few extra rounds. From around the 8th rd, DeJesus kept telling Gregorio Benitez, he was out of gas. Finally in the 11th Duran put him down and that was the fight.
Never saw the first fight, but I've read accounts of it. DeJesus supposedly took Duran to school in that one. Knocked him down in the 1st, slipped punches and hit him with counters all night and just outboxed him. Afterwards Duran bloodied his own fists punching things in his dressing room.

Louis "Kid" Kaplan vs. Babe Herman
Posted: 03 Sep 2006, 03:07
by Chuck1052
According to their records on BoxRec, Louis "Kid" Kaplan
and Babe Herman fought each other seven times during
the 1920s. Each fighter won one bout by decision while
each of the remaining bouts ended in a draw. Note- I
think that the late Bob Soderman found another bout
between Kaplan and Herman.
