This is why he is so scripted, and fails to make any decent comments when the fight does not go the way his scriptwriter expects.
He's been doing the job years now and he still has not learnt anything.
Rumours are he either got the job through family connections or rent boy connections.
I think "rent boy connections" is a bit below the belt but I have to agree Smith is as you say limited in boxing knowledge but ITVs main commentator (just cant recall his name at the moment) isnt much better - Harry Carpenter, the Murray Walker of boxing was great to listen to but men like that are few and far between - As for Holdsworth, sorry no comment.

missed it last night I'm watching the vid now and to be honest, I don't see what all the fuss is about, I just finished watching round six and so far I haven't seen a single good punch land clean (well, one or two). It is competitive but it's because it's two blokes fighting down to a level and flailing at eachother rather than both performing well. Like a skinny version of Williams-Skelton 1
Refereeing is terrible, the way he allowed Macklin to rub his head in Morre's face all the time, you would think he was auditioning to ref Hatton or Scott Harrison fights
EDIT: Ok, second half was a lot better, but still playground stuff the ending was scary, I hope he's alright.
I had Moore ahead at the stoppage.

Not sure I agree, I guess it depends on your interpretation of the fight. One poster thought it was Moore ahead early, with Macklin coming back. I disagree and thought Macklin was in a handy lead.
For me, it was only in the 10th when it looked a question of survival for Macklin and it looked very unlikely that he was going to win another round.... and thats the round he got KO'd.
When did you think the corner should have chucked in the towel? Cause he was well in the fight at the start of the 10th. Had they chucked in the towel then I (and I'm sure others) would be saying "what the feck are you doing, your winning"

Thing is he was badly hurt and had nothing left after the 9th and shouldnt have been let out for the 10th... Watson was ahead against Eubank but shouldnt have been let out for the last round when he could barely stand....

I agree on Watson, but Macklin wasn't as bad. The ref should have waved Watson off after he got up in the 11th. He was completely out of it. The only time that Macklin looked that bad was when the fight was stopped.

Happily it wasnt so bad but thats down to luck as much as anything, who knows what impact it will have on his career though.

Sorry what I meant was Macklin coming out for round 10 wasn't as bad as Watson coming out for round 12. He hadn't heavily gone down and Macklin wasn't practically being aided to stand for the start of the round, like Watson was.

Fight of the year so far, IMO. It's unlikely to be beaten too. Mathew showed great heart, courage, determination & ruggedness. Going into the 10th, I had it dead level. At this point, I thought back to the 18-1 odds for the draw.
However, it soon became apparent that Macklin would probably not survive the round; he put his heart & soul into the fight. Both fighters are real class. They are the epitamy of boxing. It was a great night for boxing.
I wanted Macklin to win and thought he would, but it was not to be. As Ricky Hatton said, Mathew perhaps did not pace the fight right, and that was the telling factor. However, I'm not too disappointed that Macklin did not prevail, because Jamie Moore is first class.
As Matthew was carried-out on a stretcher, a female friend (girlfriend, sister, I'm not sure which) was clearly in bits at the worrying state of Macklin. I felt for her. It could not have been pleasant for her watching the fight.
Anyway, all the best to both fighters. Great sportsman, nice people and a privilege for me to be able to watch such a fight. Lastly, Billy Graham is a great trainer and must be commeded. Without Billy in his corner, I do not know if Matthew would have gone on for as long as he did, at the pace he did.

Stu, watch Macklin walk back to his corner at the end of the ninth and tell me the corner couldn't haven pulled him out - He was out of it and only continued into the tenth on pure instinct.

This showed that Billy Graham is a well overrated trainer.
Everyone from that gym tries to be Ricky Hatton, not knowing that Hatton would have been as good anywhere he went. They try and base their style on fitness and bodywork.
Macklin had no defence, and to be honest, I could see it coming.
Get well soon Matthew.

Of course they COULD have pulled him out, just my opinion is I have seen worse - some with disasterous consequences (Oliver, Watson, Ingle) others less so (Ward at the end of the 3rd round vs Gatti match II, went on to win round 4 on all three cards).
Macklin was winning in my book, seem to be taking Moore shots better than Moore was his. Had Moore himself close to being out in round 9 and had recovered from spells of reclessness himself.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and yes if I knew Macklin was going to fold so drastically in the 10th then I would have pulled him out. But then, if I knew all this in advance, I wouldn't have taken the match.
Now Watson AND INGLE should have been stopped and had it not been so early, then so should have Oliver's cause he was spent also.

Wot a super super fight, it wasnt blessed with skill but had more guts than the floor of a bad butchers shop!! I was rooting for Macklin and still think he could have won it (there was nothing between them until the stoppage) but if u ask me honestly his corner let him down. I dont agree with previous posts that he shouldnt have been allowed out for the 10th but he did look out of it getting back to his stool after a monsterous 9th round. What i do think is that his corner let him by not telling him to slow his pace, a blind man could see that he couldnt keep up that relentless pace for 12 rounds, even when they showed his dressing room before the fight he seemed to be putting a lot of effort into hyping himself up and looked like he was wasting energy warming up. Basically he was too "Up for it" and it was his corners job to control that agression and make sure he could last 12 rounds, if had paced it better I think he would have shaded it. Moore deserved to win, he was a little bit cuter on the night and showed more experience but take nothing away from Macklin, with better direction he would have won the fight, both fighters showed great heart and it was exciting stuff

Why was round nine so exciting? Because it was a two-way round. Matt had looked tired a few rounds previous yet kept coming back.
He deserved to continue. If many of the posters on this strand were trainers Corrales would have been pulled by his own corner after his first knock-down.
Corrales wasnt staggering around like a drunk for the amount of time that Macklin was... different fight...

I don't think Moore was ever in serious trouble, where as Macklin was fighting on power of will in the 8th and 9th.
The way he dropped in the tenth was all the proof needed that Macklin was fighting on will.
Moore was very cute in there where as Macklin was gung ho - From reading the pre-fight interviews it was clear that Mackiln thought he had the power to walk through Moore. This was his undoing and I to would question the tactics employed by Billy Graham.
I think southpaw stylist raises a very valid point.

I agree, it was clear by about the 3rd that Macklin wasnt going to get Moore out early and that Moore was going to grind him down... yet there was no change of tactics whatsoever.... what happened to Macklins jab or defence?... the thing is that I think Macklin would have had a much better chance of winning had he fought a more intelligent fight... as it was he ignored the basics like jabbing and defence and that cost him and you must question where his corner was during all this time...

I can't believe people are complaining about them not pulling out Macklin sooner.
He was in the fight right up until the knockdown, to say that he should have been pulled out sooner is only an insult to his performance and the fight itself IMO.

Maybe some of us are getting old, but I persoanlly have seen too many fighters allowed to go too far on courage alone and leave the ring on a stretcher... I want to see a good fight but I dont need to see young men having their health ruined to prolong a good fight...

Probably the best domestic fight I've seen was Ayers vs Rigby 1 ...far more ferocious than the Moore vs Macklin fight and ended on a handshake when Rigby had the sense that he had taken enough... nothing wrong with that and it added an uplifting element to the fight, while for me the conclusion to Fridays fight was sickening and left a bitter taste...

I see where you're coming from but at what point should have he been pulled out? The only reason people are saying that is due to the devastating KO which came from nowhere and could easily of happened in the 1st round and infact do happen all around the world. Hindsight is great.
Moore was in big trouble throughout the fight and I had Macklin up by 1 round going into the 10th.
Had he quit after the 9th (in which he had success also) I imagine people would still complain. Now people will look back on the fight and Macklin himself and think great fight & what a couragous guy, as they do with Corrales/Castillo

Well I felt that the writing was on the wall after the 9th and Moores corner told him between rounds that Macklin had shot his bolt... look at the way Macklin collapsed onto his stool after the 9th... I've seen many fights like this when things are still close but one guy is exhausted to the point of collapse... thats the point where people get hurt. Mcdonnel vs Nelson is an example... Jim suffered a simularly nasty ko which really ended his career. Macklins corner could easily have pulled him out after the 9th... said he was exhausted... he would have learned a hell of a lot and not taken those last few punches which might make all the difference to his career...

It's a tough one to call.
With hindsight it was such a horrific knockout but at the end of the 9th I was still rooting for Macklin and hoping he would pull something out of the bag despite looking phucked at the end of the round.
I suppose you would think the corners/trainer are closer to the action than us and would be able to tell that Macklin had nothing left but I guess it's not a science and not that easy?

The KO didn't come from nowhere at all. It happened because Macklin was utterly exhausted and unable to defend himself. The round before he was staggering around the ring like a drunk, despite getting the better of spells of the round, because he was so tired he could barely stand up straight.
His opponent by contrast, came out for each round looking bright eyed and fresh, and despite the fact Macklin seemed to keep managing to summon the energy to threaten turning the fight, the general trend was that he was fading from the 5th round onward.
Any fighter that exhausted is going to get stopped if his opponent is still relatively fresh.

Yes quite right, thats all the commentators kept saying from the 1st bell was that Macklin started way too fast and he did blow his load, however he was still in the fight and had every right to continue.
I still think people would be complaining had the fight been stopped earlier. Shit, some guys over on current scene wont stop calling Freitas a quitter since he pulled out after getting a dribbing from Corrales in the later rounds. I wouldn't have had any problems with it personally as I can understand why but fights similar to that go the distance all the time, the ref nor his corner weren't to know that he was about to get KO'd in that fashion.
Anyway I don't think we should argue over such a great fight, we should commend them and be thankful Macklin is still in good health.
