Thing is at some point both of these teams will have faced the best opponents win lose or draw.

Can the same be said of Mr Calzaghe ?

Exactly! I hate that little prick Henman, and that nob-jockey Rusedski, and the English football team :P but at least they went out on there shield. Calzaghe has been hiding his whole career, padding his record, picking oponents at the right time, fighting only one elite oponent when public pressure was errupting all around him like a fcuking volcano. And, on the back of his greatest victory what does he give us.... a pull-out with a reputed hand injury and a Bika-refull oponent!

Calzaghe doesn't have a personality therefore he is not eligible.

You think Calzaghe should win the BBC Sports Personality award because he beat Reid & Woodhall all those years ago

Consider Max, that Woodhall retired after the Calzaghe fight and that many people thought Joe lost the Reid fight.

Lets keep it real, however much you rate Reid & Woodhall, they're hardly going to get Joe into the 'hall of fame'. The fact that those are the only names you could dig up from an 8 year run as an undefeated world champion tells it all!!!

It will be exactly 9 years tomorrow!

Boxers historically did well in Sports Personality of the year but the lack of exposure has killed the boxing challenge.

Only been won by 3 boxers since it began.
Henry Cooper won it twice(has to be purely based on popularity and personality here!!) McGuigan and Lewis once each.

Thats not a great deal of success for the sport.

The overseas award has been won by Ali 3 times(also sports personality of the century!)Tyson and Holyfield.

Problem Joe has,is his distinct lack of personality,and fame.
I mean,he is as deserving as ANY shortlisted this year(Clarke.....sympathy if we are being honest,Panesar....for taking a few wickets in what basically is a friendly game?Andy Murray....for beating Federer in a tournament that nobody cares about?David Walliams at one point....fvcking ridiculous!!)
It's fair to say Joe has achieved more in the sporting year than this lot.
But his outburst shows exactly why he is'nt that well liked and not that well known.

True, although boxers did seem to be more in the running years ago. I'm sure Bruno would have won it in 1995 if the fight would have been on terrestial TV.

Incidently, Joes' odds have slashed somewhat. He is down to 20/1, at one stage recently he was 66/1.

Errrm no I don't think that he should win it just because of wins in the late 90's. I was just saying they wern't padded fighters for Joe.

Calzaghe has had a good career, but he has never had a great year. You'll lucky if he fights more than twice and one of those fights will always be against a journeyman. He has performances like those against Starie, Reid and Salem scattering his record a good performances against good fighters come around about as often as an eclipse.

Even if Joe was a household name he has never had a year where I would say he was the best British sportsman.
