Why Joe? - why?.
I hope Manfredo beats him.
I hope Manfredo beats him.
Don't get me wrong,to me that is great money, and I would say it's even more than 75-25 in Joe's favour..more like 90-10!!!chris s wrote:Joe pockets around 600k for 75-25 fight. I say that is good money for little risk.yiddo14 wrote:Why do you assume Joe will be making a bundle of money?
Is this fight PPV?(yeah, right) Is Manfredo that big a name really? Can't imagine the casual contender fans(was it really a ratings smash?)will tune into nothing but boxing. The average contender fan watched it as much for the soppy life story crap as they did for the actual fights.
People need to remember,Manfredo actually lost 2 fights on that poxy show.He got reinstated due to other reasons.
Calzaghe won't make that much more than he usually does IMO.
Fair point about Contender and the life story nonsense, but Manfredo is a name through that show and HBO know he'll bring ratings even if the audience don't know a left hook from a fish hook.
HBO would have prefered it in Wales I think: a sell out Welsh crowd singing for the local hero - type of atmosphere the TV companies love.glittermonkey wrote:I don't think that this is such a bad step for Calzaghe, although I can't see why the fight's taking place in Wales, and not across the pond.
Yes, from a business point of view it's genius, no doubt about it. Lots of people who don't follow boxing will probably buy this PPV in the states, Calzaghe gets fantastic exposure, and if he manages to do a number on Manfredo, there will be a big wow factor from the viewers who know shit all about boxing who think Manfredo is a great fighter because of the contender.chris s wrote:Great fight to make business wise.
Manfredo is a name in his homeland because of that wank reality TV series. More people watched him in that than Mayweather or the rest have ever had.
Brilliant exposure for Joe, bundle of money and a win.
If that was the case I bet that Joe was gutted to find out that he'd be fighting in Wales again.MightyWarrior wrote:HBO would have prefered it in Wales I think: a sell out Welsh crowd singing for the local hero - type of atmosphere the TV companies love.glittermonkey wrote:I don't think that this is such a bad step for Calzaghe, although I can't see why the fight's taking place in Wales, and not across the pond.
Then Taylor in a summer superfight - probably USA for that one.

Well they came though with the promised Lacy fight 6 months ago, so why not Taylor? Taylor wants it, as he's leaving middle at the end of 06 and it's THE big bucks fight at SM.yiddo14 wrote: Taylor in the summer?
Same as the mega fight we were promised in march 07.....or the big mega homecoming we were promised after Lacy.....the career defining date for Joe which ended up being Bika?
I would love to see Calzaghe/Taylor,but I would bet more money on England winning the ashes in cricket followed by the rugby team sweeping the 6 nations AND world cup next summer happening than Joe v Jermain!!!!
Hey,I would love to see it happen, but look at the above posts.Lacy fight was promised, and made,so thats 1 out of 4.MightyWarrior wrote:Well they came though with the promised Lacy fight 6 months ago, so why not Taylor? Joe wants it for the money & prestige, and no doubt sees it as a fight he'll win.
And HBO wants it because it'll be a huge fight.
I reckon those three factors add up to an excellent chance this fight gets made in 07.
Barring upsets that is.
In a word, NO.yiddo14 wrote: If Taylor or Kessler is'nt delivered in the summer, and we are treated to another dodgy opponent, will(can)any Calzaghe fan be able to defend that?
Well I'd be more likely to pay to see Calazaghe vs Dale Winton, then I would for against Manfredo. Good job it's only on ITV.JimmyJamJerusalem wrote:Absolutely f**cking disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hear when he's done with Peter he's going after Dale Winton. Dale should push him to the limit!!!
Yeah, Dale's always said he'd like to bash Calzaghe in the ring.ILikeBeer wrote:Well I'd be more likely to pay to see Calazaghe vs Dale Winton, then I would for against Manfredo. Good job it's only on ITV.JimmyJamJerusalem wrote:Absolutely f**cking disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You're mixing things up -- team Palle is not FWarren. Team Calzaghe is the one that has shown less than enthusiasm for a Kessler-Calzaghe matchup thus far.Max Molyneux wrote:Stieglitz was offered the October date but complained there was no German Tv dates when they would of showed him fighting Calzaghe most likely.![]()
I'd have preferred it if Joe had kept his belt so if he did fight Kessler, he have more to put on the line against.
Plus if Stieglitz wins the vacant title Kessler's people will go for the paper champ instead of Calzaghe.
