I would not rate Wayne Elcock as having the ability of Richard Williams.
IMO - Elcock has been exposed chin wise..
Be interesting to see how Mcdermott comes along though.
Williams still beats them!

You could say the same thing about Williams having been exposed... he looks good but lacks that extra gear and durability to take him past the domestic level... I dont care where a fighter comes from, Williams vs Elcock is a very close fight however you look at it and I'd favour Elcock slightly...

Williams lacks durability???
He tooks big shots from Eastman without being hurt - his ko was as much down to exhaustion.
Elcock knocked out by Murphy in 1 and shaken by Tsarrenko.
Williams stopped in 12 BY HOWARD EASTMAN.
Elcock won't beat Williams..
Howard is after all a World Top 10 Middleweight...

He was still koed wasnt he??... and he's been stopped before as well!... is that a sign of great durability??!

Williams is a decent fighter but everytime he has stepped up beyond domestic level he's been found wanting and thats a fact, so him against Elcock is a very close fight and Elcock is the natural Middleweight as well and probably a bit fresher also...

Tony Badea.World Rated at the time and Commonwealth Champion?
Shannon Taylor ( Beaten 7 months after going 6 with Shane Mosley for the World Title)
Andrew Murray ( RIP) Not at his best - but still a good fighter)
Andrei Pestraiev ( Had just battered Steve Roberts and was SHUT out by RW)..
ALL ABOVE DOMESTIC LEVEL AND BEATEN MY RW.
Sergio Martinez is WORLD CLASS - top 5??.
RW was pulled out on his feet never went down - corner retirement..
Howard Eastman World Top 10 - stopped round 12..
Durable enough mate..
Rtd 9 and Stopped in 12 by Howard Eastman does niot make you vuklnerable.
Even Howard said RW was very durable and very strong and he should know..
No - it was not friendship that made him say it - it was because Eastman was in there with a Middleweight RW not a Weight weakened Light Middle version...

No one doubts Richard Williams was a good fighter, but his halcyon days were down at light-middleweight. This is a higher weight against a man who has spent the whole of his boxing career (amateur and pro) at 160lbs.
His wins at 154 were excellent, and I thought he had the talent to be European champion.
But a little bone of contention – didn’t Williams get knocked down in the 12th round against Martinez in their first fight? I’m sure he did.

Whoever won out of Elcock and McDermott wouldnt even be the best Middleweight in Birmingham never mind Britain
I think Podmore is too biased toward Elcock an Mcdermott, being a Birmingham boxing fan, every article on bb.net he writes, is about elcock or mcdermott

Well, considering I am the Midlands correspondent it's only natural I do most of my articles on two of our best boxers.
However, I cover more than just Elcock and McDermott - it's just they phone me up often, so I put down what they say. If you look, you’ll see I was talking to Mutley the other day – he’s not Elcock or McDermott, is he?

Not here for an argument Mr Podmore, just stating my opinion, which is what these forums are for
My opinion is Matt Macklin beats them both. Before you say the winner will be the best in Britian, which is an absolute insult to the likes of Eastman, Lockett and other fighters who know they'd beat McD&WE, they must be the best in Birmingham, which in mine and others opinion, they aren't

Fair enough, Mr Smith, i assume it is you.
I'm stating my opinion which is that McDermott will show what a class act he is given the chance. Dean Powell told me he's thinking of putting in Macca with Lockett in April - so we'll see.
However, my article, when i mentioned the now infamous 'Best in Britain' comment, was pure conjecture. As i've said previously, i should have put could instead of will. But mistakes are made.
Macca and Elcock wouldn't determine the best fighter in Brum, by the way, as Macca is from Dudley.

Believe me mate, there is MASSIVE difference. Call Macca a brummie and he'd probably chin ya ! lol Not sure about nationally , but in the improving boxing climate that is the midlands, it would be enormous,.

I just wish Boxing would make a comback in the East-Midlands i.e. Leicester which used to be a massive fight town but now ZERO.

I really, really hope so but John Griffin just seems to do about one a year and they are always those dinner/tuxedo affairs only.
It's just so fustrating when I think about all the great UK fighters that have fought in Leicester over the years Turpin, Sibson, Mills, London, Woodcock etc etc etc.
But I live in hope.

I went to a show at the Cattle Market in Melton a couple of years back, but it was very poorly attended. Unless a big hope comes from Leicester I can't see any of the present promoters going there. Are there any decent venues there?

There are a number of possibilities, more so if you include DeMontfort University and The University of Leicester campus'.

Richard Williams definitely took a legitimate count against Sergio Martinez. I can still picture it in my minds eye.

He took a count..
But.. I was Ringside for that one and it was not a punch that did it..

It was legit though. More a case of Richard looking for a hiding place than being put down directly from a particular punch.

He was KNACKERED and just went down through exhaustion..
His chin is solid..
S-O-L-I-D!.
Even against Eastman - the exhaustion played its part..

therefore it must be training issues that need addressing, a fighter should be prepared to pace himself and condition his body to last the duration of the fight...be it 4,6,8,10 or 12 rounds.
if williams is getting beaten only because he is knackered, then its a bit late in his career to change things, should have been done a long time ago.

Against Martines in the first fight he had to make lightMiddle at short notice..
Against Eastman - maybe on the NIGHT he did not pace it as well as he should - he forced the fight throughout.
Martinez 1 was due to weight making and bring ing the foight forward 2 weeks and shifting the weight too quickly.
He has done 12 befiore ( Pestraiev) ans did it well enough, maybe the night against Eastman?.
You have a point about the stamina issue though - ONLY RW knows and i AINT asking him!

Williams does have a soid chin, but that's got nothing to do with whether a knockdown is official or not. The fact remains Williams took a genuine count.
