Close one for Marroquin and not so close for Crawford (to look at the scoring). Wish our boxers had more competition with the Cubans. They need it.

Impressive display by the Cubans. All their eight boxers have qualified and fight for gold. Venezuela have five finalists, USA only three.

ricky did you see the Abner Cotto-Luis Del Valle fight? how was it?
Cotto was the last guy to beat Del Valle in puerto rico (it was the first time they fought then Del Valle beat him twice) im impressed by the result cuz those two wins by Del Valle over him were very dominating performances.

Looking at the score (20-11), it appears that Cotto dominated Del Valle. Maybe Luis has a different mind set now that he's no longer competing for Puerto Rico??

We may only have 3 U.S. boxers in the finals (Dargan pulled out of the semis - it could have been 4), but 7 did qualify for the Pan Am Games. Yes, it would have been nice to have our boxers in the finals but I'm just proud that we qualified who we did in the first go-around. :D

First of all, I´m sorry I could not keep up with the results, this have been a stressful week helping our guys and keeping them motivated while they maintain their weight down.

I don´t know where you got that info about the dominating performances or the 2 wins but I was told by Abner´s trainer, who is here in Venezuela, they only fought twice before and Luis won the second one in a very close fight. I did not see any of those 2 fights so I´m just telling you what I was told. Know in this week´s fight they had a very technical fight and it was dominated by Cotto as the score shows you. They are both very nice kids and I told Luis I was 100% behind him against anybody until he have to fight our guy and he really understood. I´m very impress with the kid and I´m glad he cualify for Brazil.

i was there i got them on tape but now that i think about it i must confess i might have mixed their trilogy with the fights he had against Gamalier. Eventho i cant remember al the details of each fight I do have a clear memory of the last fight and while it was action packed Luis was the clear winner. I tip my hat off to Abner tho. Before getting beat by him Luis had beat everyone but Velazquez in the island. Puting up a dominant performance at this point of both guys career tells a lot of Abner, i thought the diference in terms of international experience would mean a clear win for Del Valle.

And about the mind set i dont think its the case. Orlandito is a proud puerto rican but hes very very hyped up about all the things that are happening to him in the states. Hes a preasure fighter and mostly beats his foes cuz of his workrate. Ive noted hes having troubles to mantain the intensity for more than 2 fights in a row when the dates are close to eachother. That shouldnt be a problem once he goes pro but its clearly affecting his achievements at the amateur ranks.

Wow. Does Cuba ever lose? 8 for 8 in the finals. That is impressive. USA - 0 for 3. Not as impressive. Hopefully, some of our boxers now step up their training a few notches so that we can win some medals at the Pan Am Games.

Yes, training is important. But more important, IMO, is the fact that our boxers need LOTS of international experience. Unfortunately, that probably isn't going to happen until AFTER our entire mind-numbing qualifying process. The Worlds in September is the next biggie. If our Olympic team (who will also have to go through the Continental qualifying process) gets much international experience between, say, October and next May (a whole 7 months), I just hope its quality competition and it makes a difference.

That's what's so scary about Cuba. Not their best line up and they still win everything! :D

They did were very impressive.... I would like to thank USA's Team Doctor, I'm sorry I don't have his name, for all the help he gave our team's Head Trainer Chikie Laureano and me regarding our 178 lb boxer Carlos Negron's injured ankle. After all the kid couldn't continue in the competition but the doctor's concern and treatment was a very gratifying experience in a very stressful week. If any of you knows the gentleman's name please post it... Our delegates are fighting his qualifying status because someone said in Venezuela that he could not qualify with a walk over loss. They wanted him to climb into the ring with his injured ankle and fight. A stupid rule when they had doctors there to check the injury.

Not being able to qualify because of a w/o loss would be a dumb rule, but there are other dumb rules so who knows. I'm not as familiar with the AIBA rules so I don't know whether that is correct or not.
