isnt that Butch Lewis in that pic. there?
Wasnt he promoting Mike for awhile?
Butch Lewis certainly did promote his fighter Michael Spinks.
Butch Lewis made sure that LARRY HAZZARD was referee for Spinks' fights in Atlantic city.
And when Spinks was beaten up by Eddie Davis in Atlantic City,
Larry Hazzard gave Spinks every round as a judge in that fight to help Spinks keep his title.
Butch Lewis paid Hazzard off in $100 bills in the dressing room right in front of Spink's sparring partners, according to them.
With Larry Hazzard refereeing, Spinks was free to use his pet "punch," an elbow following up either a left hook or an uppercut.
Angelo Dundee said between rounds on national television to his fighter Vonzell Johnson during his title fight with Spinks (with LARRY HAZZARD, of course , as 'referee' )
"If he hits you with another elbow, KICK HIM."
Spinks was able to weigh 173 1/2.
Butch Lewis would set the scales so that 173 1/2 pound Spinks weighed 175
so that his 175 pound opponent would weigh a pound or more over 175 at the weigh in.
They pulled that on Eddie Gregory (Mustafa Muhammad) the first time they fought. Eddie spent hours in a steam room the day of the fight. During the fight he beat Spinks up for the first rounds and then ran completely out of gas.
For the second Spinks-Eddie Gregory fight in Washington DC, Gregory kept a calibrated scale in his hotel room and knew he weighed within the 175 limit.
When he weighed in on Butch Lewis' scale at over 175 for the fight,
he refused to accept that.
The fight was called off.
Yes, Butch Lewis certainly did "promote" Michael Spinks.
