It should be law that money is always split 50/50.
Good champ versus good challenger sells tickets. Good champ versus poor challenger doesn't. Which means a poor challenger won't get rich on 50% when few turn up; neither is the champ unduly paid. It's fair in that the more competitive the fight, the higher the purse is likely to be via fans.
Promoters wouldn't be needed with non-corrupt authorities. Their natural home is promoting rubbish night clubs. It's a dream to think about boxers being forced to fight others around them in the rankings. That or retirement.

One assumes 100% of the German and Danish TV rights would eclipse 3 millions Euros. And that was only part of the offer made.
It was $95 american for the last Kessler fight...you really think it's going to land him a lot of cash? I searched about 6 sites to get an online RBR...and found 1 guy.
But his last fight was against Andrade... hardly a banner opponent! Kessler either has a fanbase or he doesn't. If 35000 people are willing to pay to see Calzaghe/Manfredo live, then it's clear exactly who will be bringing the numbers to any Calzaghe/Kessler match-up. If Kessler can't sell a unification fight on his own patch then that's no-one's fault but his own.

I actually felt Andrade was a good challenger who though technically outclassed was powerful, gutsy and persistent. Manfredo was effing pathetic. What I'm wondering is, how much did the Contender elevate Calzaghe's stage? I mean, you bring in more viewers then turn 'em off because there are no genuine fights and the ref has to catch the last train home...
The onus must be to deliver an actual real genuine fight because despite the hugely impresive #s, last night was very thin on content.
I also think that if Calzaghe is going to do similar #s again, he would need an elite opponent or a name. The Contender fad is obliterated and a guy like Hanshaw was held to a draw in the ShoBox final...I'd say double world champ and elite boxer Kessler, Brit-hating Ozzie rapper and outstanding athlete Mundine for instance, would do the job.
Then again, if unfashionable Berrio was advertised as a unification (rather than taking a paper title that he already gave up...), who knows...

Except for the boxing fans (and we are few) no one in Denmark would know the difference between Calzaghe and Andrade, its only Kessler that sells.

...which is why he was offered the exclusive rights in Denmark and Germany. Any numbers on Kessler's last PPV?

If they sold 10K I think they will be glad. The danish rights wont give very much due to a TV contract already made, and why would the germans give much for the rights? Kessler might have been shown on ARD once, but it was Beyer that was the main draw for them. As I said before, no german TV station opted to show the Andrade fight. If they shold be able to see it, it will not sell for more than £50K to a premium cable station like Premiere.

So why does a guy who can sell 10k at most deserve 50/50? (Unfortunately) Boxing is a business not a charity. You could argue for 50% of the purse, but the TV rights and ticket sales as well? Not a chance.

Kessler TV rigths sell in other places, I think his 3-4 have been shown live on PPV in Canada and Australia, so maybe Frank should offer those TV rights instead. Kessler sells alot of tickets here, the Andrade show made a profit dispite a pisspoor undercard. Kessler have become really popular here, among things winning sports personality 2006. It has come to a point where he have moved to Nothern Germany were he is being left alone by the public.
Posted: 08 Apr 2007, 18:02
by Freiheit
And he will be able to see more PPVs if they would either lower the price (it was around £45 for that week card) or really improve the quality of the undercard. I havent meet anyone "private" yet that bourght the card, but alot of people saw the fight in bars ect.

And Im not saying Kessler deserves a 50-50, but he do deserve at least a 35/40% depending on where the match is held.

One assumes SN didn't make the offer for a fight in Denmark or Germany.

Oh -- "one would assume".
One would also assume god sits on a cloud and has a long white beard, and that the easter bunny brings the chocolate eggs.

I can see it now. Double header in America. Calzaghe v Hanshaw and Kessler v old slapper Tarver.
On good thing about boxing is that there are big promoters who can develop talent all over thr world. But these powerful entities have great problems doing business with one another.
On the back of Lacy and Contender, Calzaghe has become a bigger draw and as this is "prize fighting" a fight with a big name happens only if it "makes sense."
As if Calzaghe-Kessler happens in America, on neutral ground. Come on, it has to happen in the Millennium Stadium to do justice to the fight and make the full amount of money.
I think that Calzaghe and Palle are testing each other out. We know that Kessler is willing to travel, for more money - or have home advantage for less...That's very reasonable but Calzaghe is the established champion.
HBO will surely press them both, unless they want to develop both as seperate commodities - which is very possible. I mean, they put the $ up for Taylor-Winky, because they NEEDED Jermain to win.

It could be that Sports Network genuinely wants no part of Kessler because Calzaghe could lose this one, and that these insulting fake offers are part of Sports Network's established ducking methodology, which has made Calzaghe's career a laughing stock and a shame for the sport of boxing.
It could be? It is, mate. Open your eyes.
I actually disagree with this. Kessler is obviously the hardest fight out there. Because he's an outstanding boxer with arguable a better boxing brain than Joe. But I don't think they're in fear of Kessler.
For all Kessler's many abilities, there is a robotic way about the Dane, who ha sa thick-set way about him, whereas Calzaghe is faster and more fluid. I'd say Warren was genuine when he said
he thinks Kessler's made for Joe's style.
Anyway, it's a start that offers are being made. The fact seems to be that Warren wants it in July, whereas Kessler has to take time off after fights because of his back problems. Each fighter carries a big rep and has a lot to lose so it's only natural that terms aren't agreed right away.
The importance of the fight has gone from forums like these with knowledgable boxing followers, to economic/historical demand from HBO itself. Warren has the Millennium Stadium as a golden goose, and even America are calling for it.
Last Saturday has given off a lot of negative vibes, so they'll have to do something more positive next time.

You're a bit shaky these days, mate -- only a couple of days ago you claimed Kessler would defeat Calzaghe, and that Calzaghe would have difficulties even with Andrade.....
I agree though that style-wise Kessler isn't that bad for Calzaghe. The best anti-dote to handspeed is footspeed and lateral movement, and in both departments Kessler is good but not outstanding. Actually, Mundine might be the more unpleasant style match-up for Joe.
Kessler's strenghts -- outstading jab, tight defense, amazing punch accuracy, superior strenght -- would still be enough to give Joe a lot to think about, however. He couldn't just let lose against Mikkel, a sharp and precise counter-punch might come his way any time.
At the moment I see the fight about 50:50. This said, Warren has never taken a 50:50 fight for Joe. Not even a 2:1 fight. Hence I remain sceptical.

if kessler really believes he can beat joe then he should fight him at whats being offered.despite the keyboard warriors drumming him up he is still only the number 2 in the division and he really needs the fight.come on kessler show some balls and take the fight.

I like to play Devil's Advocate, and don't mind playing both sides off a bit, see what I can get from both sides of the argument.
I admire both fighters, one of whom sort of pisses ppl off for half a year and puts 'em in a state of severe state of doubt...
I do think Joe has trouble with Andrade, because of the guy's tank, size and tenacity...but I did concede a 2002 Joe would do better.
Yep, Kessler is great at a lot of things. But speed kills against an organised, classy guy. On the other hand, while Joe has fought a few big guys (Brewer, Woodhall) none of them was a great outside fighter.

Best alternative would be to fight in the US with each getting 50%
What happens if Calzaghe breaks his hand in the third round against Kessler?? i can tell you what happen, the homer ref will help him out. One more reason why Kessler shouldn't fight Joke in UK unless he gets 50/50 of the purse

That's not REALLY fair. Kessler would know how to defend himself for one, and unless Joe waved his hand about, the ref wouldn't know it was fvkced!
Don't forget, Lacy took a lot of punches. Bring in a US ref. Don't bring in any WBO regulars like Genaro Rodriguez or British refs anxious to get the last train home.

If Kessler and Calzaghe happened In America barely any Americans would pay to go to see a big fight between Europeans.
Kessler doesn't have enough draw to make a 50/50 purse realistic.

IF and it is a big if, Kessler is expecting parity, then I think he is pricing himself out of this. Calzaghe can make more money fighting Jermaine Taylor and will be taking on a guy moving up in weight, the purse will be a lot bigger as a promotion selling a home grown talent is going to better in the USA.
However, who on earth knows what the truth is. Not me.

Since when? I think wins over Manfredo and Lacy gives Calzaghe a slightly higher profile than Kessler.

He's had one fight on American TV. I don't know how that makes Kessler a star on American TV just yet.
