That is disgusting, and the incompetent "writers" and director who did that should be slammed at every opportunity for their poisonousness and incompetence.
Here ! Here ! As I come into contact with more and more people who are supposed to be knowledgeable about Baer and boxing for that matter, I've found that many seem to have a true ax to grind against Max Baer. I suppose its because he didn't devote himself to the sweet science in the way they feel he should have so that's their excuse to shit on him.

I will never understand why Ron Howard allowed, and the so called researchers just ignored, what an intricate individual Max was. I guess because if they didn't make him out to be the bad guy, people would be more interested in Max than Jim. I know most people who read the books end by saying Max is the more interesting person.

I know they've claimed that the film potrayal was of a 4 month period during which Max was being an asshole, but there are so many instances in the film that are sincerely disgusting and over the top, that it colors the entire characterization and is simply uncalled for. When Ron Howard, made aware of the uproar of his characterization of Baer, went back onto the Jay Leno show, where many expected him to apologize, he instead repeated what he'd said before, "well you know that Baer killed two men in the ring !" Its my fondest wish to meet Opie and spit on him.

They make Braddock out to be such a swell and moral guy but in reality he did alot of scheming, petty bullshit leading up to the Baer bout. He basically ignored a contract for a bout with Max Schmeling. He ignored a contract to fight Baer, after Jim won a questionable bout against Tommy Shaw, then when he got backed into a corner and had to fight Baer again, he retired and blamed it on his wife, saying she was too emotionally overwrought about him going back into the ring. Sounds like he chickened out to me.

LOLOLOL, yes I noticed in ESPN's discussion/documentaries that Burt would kinda rush through any sections on Max. Burt has some interesting stories to tell but he talks over some of the other less pushy commentators who I think have just as valid things to say. I would love to see a Ringside on Max Baer. Wow, 2 to 6 hours of just Max Baer stuff would be my ideal !

Cat,

Bert Sugar is a drunk.

People who worked on the staff at what was left of the Ring magazine after Nat Fleischer died and the magazine went to hell told me that head "editor" Sugar would come in for an hour or so from 11 to 12 in the morning and then leave for "lunch"----

which he drank. He never came back to the offices from "lunch."

Under Sugar, the Ring was riddled with the most basic mistakes of facts.

Sugar also did a boxing picture book at the time which is riddled with hilarious mistakes.

The most hilarious is one you would appreciate:

A caption under a photo of Max Baer fighting Max Schmeling,

identifies Max Schmeling as the fighter with the Star of David on his trunks.

You can't top that.

Sugar is completely and totally incompetent when it comes to boxing,

the ultimate example of a blowhard and a gasbag..

ROFLAMOOOO, I'm still laughing over your PM and now this, you're hysterical !! A 'gasbag' ooh its been awhile since I've heard that used so well !! I'd heard that about him but wasn't sure if it was a general consensus or the opinions of a few. I wonder why ESPN uses him so consistently on their Classic channel ? I do know that oftentimes the other commentators appear quite pained after he's droned on for awhile.

Sugar will come running at full speed if offered a chance to appear on any media show, even the smallest radio show.

ESPN is completely incompetent--so OF COURSE they present gasbag Bert Sugar as a boxing "expert."

Sugar makes so many mistakes when he opens his mouth that it is hard to keep up with them.

I remember his "expert" comment that Barbados Joe Walcott was "middleweight" champion in a radio show shortly after Jersey Joe Walcott died.

One weight class is as good as another to a boxing "expert" like Bert Sugar.

Did you know that drunken Bert is kept awake at night by the sound of his liver crying?

ESPN got the wonderful collection of boxing films collected over a lifetime by Jimmy Jacobs when his surviving partner Bill Cayton donated them to ESPN, which was a disaster for those films and anyone interested in them.

Cayton naturally assumed ESPN would comprehend the value of the films and show a number of them, especially the oldest.

Instead the retards at ESPN show only Ali films and few other very recent films over and over.

I can only hope they don't destroy the rest of the collection.

Sugar was also used by Mr. Bangs, PBS' Ken Burns, as the "boxing expert" for his screwed up, clueless, agenda driven special on Jack Johnson.

In that disaster, Burns ran a photo of Barbados Joe Walcott and said it was Sam Langford.

One photo of a black fighter is as good as another for "expert" Ken Burns, even in a program devoted to showing how poor Jack Johnson was mistreated, a victim, etc etc etc. because he was black.

Bert Sugar and Ken Burns apparently have a thing about Barbados Joe Walcott. They can't get anything right when it comes to Barbados Joe.

Or anything else.

Remember, Bert Sugar is a "boxing expert."

He will tell you so himself

and try to wave his cigar in your face as he does so.

If you ever come across blowhard Bert, tell him you are planning to remove his hat from his head,

and watch his frantic reaction.

If I hadn't started alreay, I'd have given you an account of Baer-Oliver. You party?
Nope not a party girl anymore. I'm too busy researching Max and to quote Robin Williams, 'I got tired of waking up on the hood of my car with my keys up my ass.' I got to be a mean drunk in later years, better to keep it to a couple glasses of wine at holidays.

Ohhhhh, one of you SOUTHERN Californians, huh ? I'm a Northern Cali myself, born and raised in the overly crowded, overly diverse Silicon Valley. Can't wait to get the hell out, I'm heading to Wine Country in the next few years, an odd choice for a light drinker, eh ?

Yeeesh, how many posts by Decagon on the Oliver-Baer thing are there ? Y'know I went looking through the papers on this again and I still think Art Oliver may be Willie Davis or visa versa !? I was thinking I'd follow the trail *leading up to* the Baer bout and see if that clears up who was where.

I dunno, Dec seems pretty confident so lets see if he gonna shit or get off the pot !
