There was a British fighter who peaked at around 16, or 17 and who was pretty much done at 19. I cannot recall his name off the top of my head, but he turned pro at around 11, or 12 years of age...I believe! He was a very good fighter who should have been a champion had he been handled correctly and taken along a lot slower. He did very well against quality fighters while only 14 and 15 years of age, which led me to think that he could have been an all-time great had his career been nurtured and guided in a proper nature!

Terry McGovern was the best fighter p4p by age 19 and he dropped several levels at age 21, though he did continue on with great success until he retired, but he would suffer a number of mental breakdowns and ended up dying at 37! McGovern was certainly a tragic figure!

I was wondering why Rubin Carter wasn't included...

He wasn't included because he sucked. Fuck all of this Hurricane nonsense.
I thought this was just fighters whose career was cut short...

Isn't Rubin the only fighter to be given a honorary World title when he came out of prison after being wrongly convicted?

..if the "carter wrongly convicted" concept isn't on the "exposing the myths" already, it should be.

..that, along with the idea that he was somehow the uncrowned middleweight champion and his prison term came when he was the top contender and on the way to another title fight.

His career was already defined...Plus, by 1980, after the Saoul Mamby fight, his career was completely over.

KO Bill Brennan

murdered in his NY bar after he refused to change the brand of beer he was selling.

Benny Kid Paret---killed by walking in his sleep "referee" Ruby Goldstein.

Pancho Villa's wife claimed he was murdered.

The deaths of Greb and Tiger Flowers were suspicious. There was a good Ring Detective article on that back in the days before Nat Fleischer died and the Ring turned to garbage.

"Light ain't right," as someone commented. For Ali, 212 was a magic number, and he thought that if he somehow made it to 212, he would be the fighter he was against Liston.
You mean the "winner" of fixes that REEKED?

LOL

How about his getting clobbered by Doug Jones and Henry Cooper in the 2 fights immediately before he "fought " Liston?

He sure changed a lot SUDDENLY after those two struggles didn't he.

LOL

Unable to hurt Doug Jones, staggered and hit repeatedly by Doug Jones, knocked down by Henry Cooper

but then suddenly able to "beat" Liston.

What garbage.

Liston was not garbage! He was pretty darn good as a matter of fact.....he just wasn't quite as good as Clay on those two fateful events.

Ali kicked Liston's ass.

As for Liston, did he ever retire? If not, he could also be on this list, even though he really didn't have much left.

From memory Kirkland Laing was still fighting well into his 30s, so his career wasnt really cut short, although yes he has had his share of problems

TONY AYALA?

This 19-year old man-child was the talk of the boxing world before he committed that SECOND brutal rape. Classic case of a prodigy with practically superhuman talent, but zero morals.

Tony would've destroyed anybody inside the ring. He destroyed himself instead.
