Not very well. 'Newspaper' decisions were simply no-decisions. It was left to people to judge the better man in newspaper reports.

Was that because there were no judges or was it actually scored a NC, and people made their opinions afterwards?

Boxing was banned in so many states in America, no-decision fights were classed as exhibitions and could thus be staged.

Yes, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought a newspaper decision meant that they canvassed the sports writers and that an 'unofficial' decision was given based on a poll of the newspapers in attendance.

It wasn't a case of a show of hands at the end; it was the better report(s) in the days when newspapers were the only real source of information and sold by the bucketload.
Just to show that nothing really changes, local newspapers favoured local fighters and many reporters were bribed (Primo Carnera's management bribed reporters, for example).
