The both mentioned names represented much-much better opposition than that version of Dempsey. Jack was knocked down and very groggy in the 3rd round, but it still took Fitzsimmons 10 more rounds to stop him.

In his only 2nd year in the ring.
And had gone full distance with guys like Echols, Siaca and Green. Each of whom would have finished that ghost of (welterweight!) Dempsey in a couple of rounds.

Fitz was naturally a bigger and stronger man, and he wasn't nearly as washed up as Dempsey.

Only had one KO loss in 248 bouts. And that happened in his last fight.

What about Toney?
He has some chin and took whacks all the way up to heavyweight.

Hagler has a steel chin as does LaMotta, Robinson.

I think there are different levels of chins. Like steel, concrete, and we'll say hard plastic.
The elite are the steel chinned fighters. These are guys who simply did not flinch when hit solid...Hagler, McCall, Chuvalo spring to mind

Then the concrete guys like Ali, Holmes, Foreman, Toney, Holy, Chavez,
Ray Leonard, Robinson...They had greAT chins, but also relied a little on their recupperative powers and guile to get them out of trouble.
Other names are Sanchez, Eubank, Steve Collins, McCullough, Mosley, Pryor, DLH..

Then the hard plastic I'll call them....Some here are underrated like Hearns, Nigel Benn

What about Ricardo Mayorga? I laughed the first time I saw him drop his hands and invite his opponent to hit him. Funny stuff. I realize that Trinidad and Oscar got him, but if I remember correctly Trinidad absolutely punished him and once he started to the body....that's when a too heavy Mayorga fell. Mayorga was way past his best when DLH got him.

Mitch Green could be in here.

Steve Collins deserves a mention. His chin stood up to some serious shots from Eubank, Benn and McCallum and he finished his career without ever being stopped.

Maxie Rosenbloom. But he was also hard to hit.

There seems to be some level of subjectivity in what constitutes a good chin. Some argue it's the ability to get knocked down but get up, whereas personally I believe a strong chin keeps you from getting knocked down in the first place, & heart picks you up.

Btw, excellent comment made by WalshB in relation to iron chins (Chuvalo, McCall) & those one notch below (Ali, Dempsey etc.).

Mike Tyson had a very sturdy chin & while it's been mentioned in this thread, I don't know why people aren't more willing to acknowledge it. Perhaps because he is such a maligned figure.

Sparring's different, because you're not trying to win, just to see what you can do.

Collins still got knocked out in sparring - which shows he can be knocked out. I think its more to the point that it was after his main career ended - a few years after his last fight. Collins never got knocked out in a live pro bout

I think Joey Maxim was stopped only once in his carreer(Curtis Sheppard) Dick Tiger had good whiskers except against Foster. Jack Britton,only one time he didn't go the distance in 325 fights. Carlos Monzon. By the way,I heard he knocked down Joe Frazier sparring in Philly. You guys ever hear this?

One of the biggest myths in boxing is that heavyweights have immesurably bigger punches than light heavyweights and middleweights. Charley Burley knocked out Elmer Ray and Jersey Joe Walcott in training.

I'm asking if anyone ever heard that Monzon knocked down Frazier in a sparring session.

I once saw Eder Jofre on Mexican TV fighting Saldivar as a featherweight. Both were making a comeback. Saldivar was a strong guy,but Jofre handled him easy. I think the only film of him is his only 2 losses as a pro to Fighting Harada.(15 rd. decisions) Harada was a little too fast for him,but that was the only way you had a chance. If you stood toe to toe with him he'd destroy you. Just ask Joe Medel,Ricardo Moreno,Johnny Caldwell,Piero Rollo. He fought just about all his fights in South America so he's kind of fallen through the cracks in the US and Europe. Tough guy.

Gerald McClellan should be on this list simply because of all the shots he took from Julian Jackson, they might've led to his eventual tragic condition but he took them like a man and delivered the pain back 10-fold in both fights.

Cosme Rivera can't really qualify because Zab Judah freakin starched his ass...

Juan Diaz looks like he'll be a candidate soon if not already, he's walked right through some bombs by Cotto, Freitas, Julio Diaz, and others and not even flinched, while throwing back fiercely. The upcoming fight with Katsidis will catapault him higher if he walks through the crazy shit that guy can throw in the same way.

Antonio Margarito seems to have a pretty solid chin.

Ill go with the guy who has the "Best" Chin of all:

JAIDON "THE DON" CODRINGTON...look at the way he handled Green...it was like WOW!
