Hell, it's only beer, I's no more sophisticated than Guinness, it's just not that many places sell it.

The one from Tesco's is called Etalon, actually, not Estrella.

Well, Ricky does drink Bollinger.....so he's not that prole is he?

There was TV show on the fattest bloke in britain, 'big barry,' well known portsmouth supporte I think he was, or was it birmingham. I forget.

He could drink 20 pints and not even be midly pissed, it took him 40+ pints before he would actually be drunk, and he had always been able to drink like this. They investigated him, and found his liver was practically superhuman.

They do do a decent pint of Guiness over there, there's Irish and English pubs.
You are right.

Remember Bill Werbenuik?

Yep, his doctor prescribed him 35 beers a day for a 'nervous condition' delerium tremens more than likely with that amount of alcohol going through you.

Was a pretty good player for a fat alchy was Bill, cracking pool player apparently as well.

Hatton may be able to get away with it now but if he carries this on into his 30s he's going to have problems... especially after he has lost the discipline of boxing.... he should look at what happened to Bestie and scott Harrison...

Well, I'm a notherner, James. Anything that sounds 'foreign', has some subtle taste, is out of the ordinary, and costs more than a pint of Fosters is considered poncy.

I remember being one of the bars behind the Grainger Market -- Newcastle dwellers will know what I mean -- ordering a vodka and diet coke, and getting looks that said 'gay man; kill him'.

Yep, I was visiting on a detox ward a couple of weeks ago - The extreme cases have blown up livers making them look even bigger than women nine months pregnant - These people are at the end of the road whereas others on the ward will get better if they completely give up - One woman had been drinking 2 bottles of vodka a day and was going to die not having reached her 40th birthday - The longest waiting list for body parts by far is for livers so getting a liver transplant if you are an extreme alcoholic is pretty remote - People with malfunctioning livers (no fault of their own) are given, quite rightly, first priority - We tend to think spirit drinkers are going to be the ones most likely to fall victim to liver failure and they usually are but one man on the ward died having drank 4 pints of lager a day for 30 years - Some peoples livers are better than others at dealing with alcohol - Womens livers take almost twice the time that a mans does to remove the alcohol from their system - Pure alcohol is basically poison so whiskey, gin, vodka etc is 40% poison and 60% liquid a pretty sobering thought - Too much too often and sooner or later it will kill you - White cider is one of the worst killers - Basically its the black stuff at the bottom of the vat in the making of brown cider - For years it was put down the drain until ****** cider discovered a bleaching agent that made it go clear - Full of chemical, high in volume and nice and cheap, you can get totally pissed for a couple of quid - Anyway I have had enough tea for today so its time for a can of lager - I have 4 or 5 most nights and enjoy it - I never touch spirits and just have the occasional glass of wine - Its fags that are my main problem.

Alcoholism is a major problem that causes more deaths, and, I would guess, a huge amount more crime than even hard drugs.

Think of it like this: drug OVERDOSE; alcohol POISONING.

Good post, I enjoyed reading it, but isnt Fosters an Aussie beer, and brewed under licence in Burton on Trent by Allied Breweries? - Thought you would be more of a Newcastle brown ale man living up there.

I do like the occassional bottle, which are readily available here in Moscow. However, my girlfriend is import manager for a big wine importer here, so these days it's vino, I'm afraid.

I say, I'm afraid, but I do believe it's the finest of tipples.

Anyone like vodka? I'm a big fan now I've learned how to drink it properly.

Yup. Zubrowka Bison Grass Vodka, straight out of the freezer; no ice, no mixer. It's the bollocks. It's also Polish, so I don't know how much you see of it in Moscow, but still.... A good Vodka is like a good Scotch. Thoroughly enjoyable, and best drunk straight up. At least in my opinion.

I used to drink about 3 or 4 vodka and tonics a week and enjoyed them - I like cognac which became the only spirit I would drink but I havent had any in more than 5 years now - The best drink to sort out an upset stomach is cognac and lovage - Lovage is made by a Bristol company and pretty hard to get - Very sweet on its own (not nice) but mixed with a good brandy its fine - Sort you out in an hour if you are feeling off it - Honest it really works!!

16 pints, when in top class condition - gross exaggeration IMO!

Not sure what the drinking culture is like in Perth, but in the land of binge drinking UK, that's an average night out!

The novelty eventually wore off me, but I used to go out a couple of times midweek and drink ridiculous amounts. Usually start drinking straight vodka at home before going out, then have the usual ten pints or so before moving on to all sorts of hard stuff. Not exactly proud of those times, specially the multiple occasions where I completely blacked out and did stupid (read: reckless) things, but it just seemed to be what everyone did when I was growing up in England.

I was speaking to one of the top guys at Rosskiy Standart -- who have a 70 percent parket share here -- last night, and he was explaining the best way to drink vodka, which fitted in with my experiences here.

The don't drink it chilled at all, put a large, 50mm shot in a glass, drink it and follow it by eating pickled cucumbers, smoked salmon, cold cuts or kilbasa with black bread. It's a smart way of drinking, and the key is to have something salty with rye bread straight after.

Frankly, after three or four your taste buds can't really appreciate any taste.

Oh, this guy also told me that the person who invented the periodic table also invented Vodka.

What, so you couldn't eat a four course meal over the space of say 6 hours?? Wuss!!!  :TU:

Was Claude watching and taking notes then?? He must be a riot at parties.

He doesn't touch alcohol himself, so I reckon we can't trust anything he says! :TU:

whats wrong with being tee-total lol?

i imagine mr abrams noting the pintstats carefully, deducting a point for leaving the dregs in.... apparently Hatton stopped Rooney in the 11th chaser

Ironically I'm reading this thread hungover but don't see what all the fuss is about. Hatton could have easily knocked 16 Guinness into him in 8-10 hours. People making reference to his weight but I don't see it as a massive factor. I'm very good friends with Michael Hunter and while we don't count them I would honestly say hand on heart that most times we are on it 16 pints are done in easy. I'm talking a good bender. A day-night job. My British pound-for-pound top five boxer-drinkers:

1 Scott Harrison
2 Michael Hunter
3 Ricky Hatton
4 Michael Gomez (Had a memorable 3 days with him a while back - monster).
5 The alcoholic off 'The Champ' who stile his kinds' piggy bank money.

I had a curry with Claude after the Mark Potter v Osborn Mashimane fight a York Hall a few years ago.

I'm sure he had a pint with his meal.
