maybe being under prepared and having no coach/cornerman present go hand in hand
either he doesnt have one, or his coach knew he wasnt ready and refused to take part in the same

Sure there is a certain amount of trust but the manager should at least be monitoring him, and insisting he at had a look at him in Sheffield or wherever he is based.
After all he is getting paid to manage and give the fighter direction.
If managing a fighter was a case of calling a boxer when they had a job and then taking commission anyone could do it.
Why would a manager take on a kid he is never going see or know what shape he is in?
Many managers don't take an active interest in their fighters training, esp if the fighter ain't coming to their gym.
It is up to the fighter 2 be in shape.
Managers earn there money by getting work and getting good money for the jobs. A lot of managers are just agents really.
It's not the managers fault if the fighter isn't truthful about his conditioning, it's his job 2 get the fight and the fighters job to have the fight.
Lets hope he didn't take a manager's cut then and just a smaller agent's fee.
Sorry mate, but to me this is someone trying to nick a dime and to hell with the fighter and punters who paid to see a fight
Thats boxing for you!

His manager should be brought before the Board if he wasn't in shape to box
It was MTG's debut - what if he'd got seriously hurt?
Surely its the manager's job to look after his fighter not send him to box for the first time with no cornerman

just to clear a few things up.
its not daves fault i was not in good shape and the coach at the gym isnt my proper cornerman anyway.he knew my body hadnt fully recovered.
i had foolishly agreed to this fight after getting over an illness so i only had 2 weeks preperation and most of the weight lost was water-dangerous i know but i felt if i had said no then i would no longer have a manager and the saga would continue regarding my debut.
i honestly can say that without disrespecting the opponent who was indeed in shape,he never hurt me at all and it ws the fact that you could have blown me over i was that weak,it didnt help that i was 4 hours away from home alone with no one to talk to for a few hours awaiting the bout.
all i can say that after my suspension i will be a healthy 12 stoner and i will be very greatful if you guys get off daves back, afterall hes only doing his job and delivering bouts-its upto me to get in shape.
i will be back and 100% in 4-5 weeks so im hoping for a return with mike jenno anywhere-not out of disrespect but to satisfy myself mainly that im better than the "joke" ppl seem to have me labeled as.im not saying im any better than jenno but only that next time it will be a bout between 2 fit boxers rather than the display the fans saw last week.
ive had a break away for a few days, away from the phones and computers
![[icon_e_biggrin.gif] :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)
,so now ive decided that im carrying on whether its with dave(if he still feels its worth his while) or someone else ill be back at least till may and ill decide whether ill renew my lisence or forget about it.
it has been hard and i have felt a bit pressured by all the interest on here and the hype sourounding the "debut" but as i say its noones fault but my own so i can only apoligise to the actual ppl involved in this(fans, dave and the promoter of the show)i assure you noone is more ashamed or dissapointed than myself,i was all for saying its over after the fight but a few words with jonp and len woodhall have made me want to at least give it another go but this time ill be fit and if im not ready ill not take the fight.
hope that puts you at rest 8)
regards
martin

You have nothing to prove to anyone pal, only yourself. I have never contributed to a thread about you. I just thought that by starting and replying to threads/posts (when your debut appeared to be a long drawn out saga) left you as a bit of a joke where you would be better served by just getting on with it.
I am sure you have a love for the sport and an ability of sorts. Just stay off the forums, get yourself in shape and focus on what you want to get from boxing.
I wish you well.

Martin, some hard facts you need to be aware of. You will not get much more than two weeks notice for a contest, unless you sell tickets of course in which case you will fight 3-4 times a year. You are the opponent in which case you need to be extremly fit, more than any other fighter, live, sleep and eat boxing. Even then you'll get fucked over, unfortunatly you must accept this or pack the game in. Too many lads turn pro with their heads full of dreams, fine to dream and try, but this dream is not in your hands, best option is too fight often and earn, maybe a shot at something later on. Anyway best of luck whatever you do.

yeah i thought that aswell.
Class act that to come on here and post that, also cant have been easy making yourt debut and being left on your own mulling it over prior to the fight. I can help but feel sympathetic.
got bigger balls than most on here thats for sure best of luck for the future.

Yup, to even step through the ropes you had to have balls.
But if you are a pro athlete, then you should really be keeping yourself in good shape all the time. No doubt you will be better prepared next time though.
Good luck with it mate.

Hook, that bannana boat you sailed in on yesterday is leaving port again shortly.
"i had foolishly agreed to this fight after getting over an illness so i only had 2 weeks preperation" - As a prospective debutant desperate for that first fight, why werent you in shape before the illness?
"he never hurt me at all and it was the fact that you could have blown me over i was that weak" - 2 weeks after an illness (during which time you've been training) your left that weak? Kinell, what was it, lepracy? Galloping nob rot?
"it didnt help that i was 4 hours away from home alone with no one to talk to for a few hours awaiting the bout." - Fair enough, that'd be a pain in the backside, but it wouldnt affect your performance, surely? Didnt you have a "mate" to take along?
"i have felt a bit pressured by all the interest on here and the hype sourounding the "debut" but as i say its noones fault but my own " - quite right, the higher the pedastle you set for yourself the bigger the fall. More jogging, less typing me thinks.
This may all seem a tad negative, and I fully expect the "anyone who steps through the ropes gains my respect" moral high ground. But come on! The last thing this sport needs is people fornicating about and doing it half arsed. We have enough bad press without a ring death in this country. Taking the fight on the basis of pressure from some 15 or so internet forum posters, over your own health and well being is bloody stupid.
Good luck for the future MTG, unless you pull your socks up your going to need it.

It's very honest of the guy to have the balls to come on here and explain himself, most wouldn't

Most dont come on pimping themselves out for their pro career in the first place. The honest explanation smacked of the same thing as the perspective debuts - excuses, excuses, excuses.
Perhaps its just my Monday blues.

To be fair I've only been coming on here for a couple of months so I'm just going off this statement, I wasn't aware the guy had been bigging himself up etc etc....
Will leave this thread to the Boxrec veterans

Seriously considering the Dole. Granted, the Money is shit, but the hours would suit me down to the ground.

Extract from his promoter
Initially forum users started to point the finger at Gillick's manager Coldwell before the Rotherham-based ex professional flyweight explained that he had no idea why the Scot was touting himself in the first place.
“Basically I was on the internet putting my name about because I thought it would help to do some PR for myself,” said Gillick in his defence. “Some people just took things the wrong way and got onto Dave saying he wasn't doing his job and leaving one of his fighters to advertise for fights.”
However according to Coldwell this isn't the only problem he has had to endure since signing Gillick.
“A couple of my fighters had told me he had been asking questions prior to speaking to me,” said Coldwell. “He got in touch with me, we had a chat and I signed him up, not a problem.
“I said let's get cracking the season is about to start and he said I'll get my weight down, he was 13 stone when I spoke to him and he wanted to box at super-middleweight.
“You can't really do anything there, you've got to get him within half a stone of his fighting weight. Then every time I got in touch with him he had this problem or that problem and hadn't been able to train that much. Then the last time I spoke to him he was 13 and a half stone.
“I had a fight lined up for him but he wasn't able to fight so I said 'Look you need to get your weight down.' The next thing I saw on the internet that he was challenging every fighter out there at 12 stone.
“People were saying isn't it your manager's job to get you fights and people were pointing the finger at me saying why is your fighter on there trying to get himself a fight.
“He was going to sign with Mick Helliett beforehand, he's been a pro now for two years and he's never had a fight. He did the same thing with Mick Elliott who was constantly trying to get him a fight but he was never ready.”

well i was in shape until i got my lisence revoked and i thought it was over,i only heard that i was getting it back 3 week before the bout and i was out of shape and down with an infection.i was sitting at 13st 3lb so you do the math,i did what i could in the space of time i had.
to the others,i dont come here and big myself up or do i call out any fighters so i hope that puts this whole thing to rest.
