Wow, I didn't know Charles Williams took on Larry!
At that time, he was known as "The Fighter Futurly Known As Prince".bennie wrote:Wow, I didn't know Charles Williams took on Larry!

No. They were a level above him, and he wasn't difficult to hit.Nile4000 wrote:Could Bernardo have dealt with Gerry Cooney and Gerrie Coetzee efficiently?
You mean the same Holmes that always got dropped by big (but slow-ish) right hands?joe kurtz wrote:... Not that Holmes would've been troubled by Mercado, because all he'd do have to do is avoid his big ( but slow-ish ) right hand before going on to score one of his seemingly patented TKO7s.

My great aunt Sally Conforte had Oscar's contract at the time of his shooting death at the front gate of the Mustang Ranch in Sparks Nevada that Sally co-owned. My mother went to be with Sally as she was distraught over Oscar's death. I drove my mother's car from Chicago to Sparks and ended up being Bernardo's driver and gym rat for about a week. His english was poor and my Spanish was worse but we figured things out. He was a nice guy and very unassuming. You would never guess he was knocking buys out for a living - a really gentle giant. I was 21 at the time and weighed about 150 pounds. They had me hold the heavy bag for him to add weight to the bag but he moved me and the heavy bag with each punch to the point my feet would come off of the ground. I later boxed in the USMC and never once came across anyone that came close to that kind of punching power. It was cool to watch him progress through the ranks knowing that I got to spend time with a true heavyweight contender.
