Terry D wrote:He is a dickhead (in public), but a likeable dickhead and an entertaining speaker.
Danny and Frank are more popular but I never trusted Danny's "will you say yes to marrying me whenever a soppy Yank sticks a camera in my mush love" and big Frank never really endeared to me.
Big Aud' may be seen as lacking fight but Bruno also quit before entering the ring in his Tyson rematch and no one cared.
Now hold on a minute mate! Bruno went in there with Tyson twice. I agree Bruno's behaviour before the secod bout (crossing himself repeatedly) was that of a man that was scared, but you cannot say he just gave up. Frank fought Tyson & did try to win, but was completely out-gunned.
I think the way Frank was before the second fight, was more a case of him knowing what was in front of him, having been in the ring with Tyson 7 years earlier. Bruno knew what was coming for him & that's mostly the reason why he was maybe, some-what afraid during the second bout.
There's no way on earth Harrison would have fought the 1996 version of Tyson, let alone the one 1989. Audley would have $hit himself.

Bruno peformed above expectations in the first fight with Tyson. Bit unfair comparing Bruno to Audley. Of course everyone has their faults, but Bruno is far and away better than Audley is most aspects of their games.

Frank was also 37 and his best days behind him when he got in there that second time. He knew that he was going to get battered and went out on his shield.
Audley entered the ring against a totally demotivated and disinterested 20 stone danny williams and fought, to paraphrase the late great Harry Mullan 'with all the Malice of Mahatma Gandhi.'

Frank was forgiven because he produced a career full of knockouts, maulings at the hands of the likes of Bonecrusher Smith, Witherspoon and Tyson, and a lot of good memories, without ever giving it the bigone.
Compare and contrast as you see fit with Audley's career, and I think you will agree that on every level the differences are glaring. Audley's only commanding performance was against a grossly overweight and undermotivated Williams who came into the fight as little more than a barely mobile punching bag, and Audley carried on like he'd just smashed king kong to pieces.

And need it be said what would have happened if Audley did the same thing in a world title fight?
You're absolutely right, Terry - certain boxers can and can't get away with certain things, based SOLELY on the public's perception of them as PEOPLE.
Bruno fights scared and hugs and mauls his way to inevitable defeat = well, he was old, fighting a top guy, but at least he got in there, eh? Good old Frank
Audley fights scared and hugs and mauls his way to inevitable defeat = the man's a fraud, is a coward, was taking us all for a ride, good riddance to him.
Yes, I KNOW the Tyson of 1996 was an entirely different proposition to Danny Williams, but you get my point.

Read my above post, I believe this explains precisely Frank 'got away with it.'

I don't think your having a pop at Bruno or talking out of turn about an undoubted British sporting hero, Terry D, but the bottom line for me here is Bruno had a solid career, mixed in some good class and performed well often. He also won an EBU title in impressive fashion for instance.
Now I'm now saying beat an outstanding champion in Eckland, but then again here we have Audley whose done none of the above, not likely too and failed spectacularly in an only English title challenge. I'm of the opinion Audley's treatment stems as much from his career failings as anything else.

The fight should not have been stopped. It wouldnt have been stopped so quick in america. I want to see a re-match , it would be awesome. the rematch should be on the november bill.

he talks a lot of sense.....about prospects not taking risks....this defeat was a lesson and now it is up for Small to learn from it, like his former stable mate David Haye - and even his opponent last Saturday Bradley Pryce - did
