Then I'm surprised you're so judgemental...my old man's a useless alchy bastard, but at the end of the day, the person he's fekked over most is himself.

I've been as critical of Harrison as anybody, but it's difficult not to have any feelings for a man of such talent being reduced to selling autographs for a few quid's worth of drinking money and have his mates trying to dip his hands in cold water to see if he pisses himself.
It's so f-cking sad.
Hope he finds rock bottom soon, because I shudder to think where it is if he's not there now.
Realistically, he's going to a Spanish prison and potentially going to a British one, too. There can be no way back to the ring for him in the decent sense of the word, but, at the same time, he will, somehow make it back in about 2 years, just to get some cash.
Sad, sad, sad -- even if he does only have himself to blame.
This is the kind of post that scares me. My girlfriend is import manager for a wine importer and at least 3 nights nights we have wine, plus whatever we drink on weekends. I must admit, it I could afford it, which I can't right now, I think that under those circumstances I'd drink almost every day.WildWaylon wrote:Becoming an alcoholic doesnt happen over night, it takes a while - Many deny they are alcoholics and believe they could kick it any time but then find they cant if they try - Many alcoholics know they are but tell people they are not - Alcoholics cheat, lie, and steal there are no rules they have to get a drink at any cost - Over 80% of all people with mental health problems are abusers of drink or drugs or both - Most alcoholics have given up on life especially those who have lost everything - Ive written before about a former company director who slept in skips and doorways - You can have absolutely everything you could ever want and a family that loves you and bit by bit you lose the lot - Nobody can help you, tomorrow will be the same and so will the day after - Some do seek help from other alcoholics who have been through it at AA, while others go on until they die - The liver like the heart and kidneys is a vital organ and all who drink in excess do damage to it that no doctor can reverse - Meanwhile the brain is being damaged also, therefore your powers of reasoning are seriously affected as well - Alcohol is a poison - Take spirits whiskey, gin, vodka, brandy etc 40% poison 60% fluid - Thats a lot of poison, drink that for a while and see what it does to you - Smoking is frowned upon while drinking is acceptable, but why - Both are hazardous to health and both will kill you, but drinking does it more quickly - Maybe Scot Harrison has always been an arsehole, I dont really know but serious abuse of alcohol will certainly turn the most likeable person into the most detestable - Alcoholism is an illness that developes from alcohol abuse and those who do have the problem need help but if you turn the help away that is your right to do so, however if you do you pay the price - Highly paid people who can afford to buy alcohol are often the ones who fall victim to it and Scot has gone down that slippery road and is paying the price for doing so - You cant say he is an idiot for getting into heavy drinking, some very clever people with top jobs have done the same - A certain political leader had to resign because he drank too much too often - All alcohol including beer is harmful in excess and anyone who goes out and drinks beyond a gallon (8 pints) is a fool because even beer will get to you in the end - Visit a detox ward and see the suffering and watch people only 40 die, and a night out on the piss or a trip to the offy to buy vodka seems less appealing - Ok I like a drink but because I know the dangers and I have seen the misery alcoholics and their families have been through, I drink in moderation - Scot Harrison is not unique, there are many thousands up and down the UK just like him - WARNING dont exceed the stated dose it could be dangerous and a soft willy is no good either!!!!!!
Full respect my feiend for being completely honest not too many are - Alcohol has a different affect on different people and makes some very aggressive - With me it has an opposite affect, I get silly, tell daft jokes and do stupid things and of course doing stupid things can be dangerous - Having worked with so many people with mental health problems I have seen some really horrible cases of drug and alcohol abuse - Thanks for your reply which I appreciate regards WaylonCarbo wrote:This is the kind of post that scares me. What's worse is that I have this mentality where once I have a beer or a glass of wine or a vodka or whatever, I feel I almost have to have more. Once I start, if I have money and time I feel like I almost must go on. I find it impossible to go into a bar for a 'quick pint' after work, and it almost always develops into a full session. I also find it difficult, if we have say ten bottles of wine in the house, to stop at just one bottle betwen the two of us. And people don't realise that although we, and I presume most of you, would view a bottle of wine to yourself in an evening as 'nothing' -- but in medical terms it is.
It's worrying, and for a guy like Scott, who isn't working full time -- even when he was fighting, 3 or 4 fights a year training for 6-8 weeks at a time really leavs him a load of time -- I think it's easy to slip over the edge.
Its his own fault, and I would never, ever behave in the loutish way he has done, which deserves both punishment and condemnation, I think there must be more like me who can really understand how easy would be to slide into this terrible disease of alcoholism.
Yeah, I must admit, its very rare that I've felt agressive, but that may be down to a deep seated feeling that I'm actually one of the softest people I know and would be shit in a fight.WildWaylon wrote:Full respect my feiend for being completely honest not too many are - Alcohol has a different affect on different people and makes some very aggressive - With me it has an opposite affect, I get silly, tell daft jokes and do stupid things and of course doing stupid things can be dangerous - Having worked with so many people with mental health problems I have seen some really horrible cases of drug and alcohol abuse - Thanks for your reply which I appreciate regards WaylonCarbo wrote:This is the kind of post that scares me. You are right "the friends" definately dont help and what you say about them is also true, however Scot cant be blamed entirely for his drinking problems - Well off people with the ability to buy as much alcohol as they want very often become victims of it - Usually its a slow process becoming an alcoholic and it takes quite a while before you realise you cant live without it - By then its too late and you need to seek help, but that means giving it up and thats the last thing you want to do, your body craves for more and more - So you go on until you are unable to function properly and lose your job, career or whatever you do to make money - Then your whole world falls apart as real friends give up coping with you and your family doesnt want you around them anymore - Drinking mates are all you have left and you start sleeping wherever you can - Enjoying a couple of drinks is fine but too many people are becoming abusers of alcohol and that is a massive problem.GAV wrote:Some posters on here are familiar with my passionate support for Scottish boxers and in particular with my support for Scott Harrison. I must have been in many an on forum debate as to the merits of Harrison as boxer.
Coming online tonight I decided to have a quick look at what was happening on the British boxing scene, but seeing that picture put me in the mood to post.
It is just a very sad reminder of how hard a fall from grace he has taken.. scratch that....he is still taking. I saw his drinking first hand one night in a pub in my hometown East Kilbride (about a month after he beat Steve Robinson) and got to also see how his "friends" acted around him and the other patrons of the bar. He seemed content to sit and drink for the most part but his friends were reveling in their positions as "We are with Scott Harrison so get to f**k" While Harrison is undoubtedly to blame for all of his problems, I also put a heavy amount of blame of those cretinous leeches who would egg him on, bleed him dry and try to keep him as another worthless piece of shite, just like them.
I read the autobiography of Benny Lynch a few years back, before all the troubled started with Harrison, and the first thought that came into my head upon closing the last page was "this better not be Scott Harrison". Unfortunately it turns out to be the case and it is one that is very troubling for me to see.
Wouldn't that be a barrel of Gin per person per year? Isn't that around 1litre of gin per day for an average adult?jamesmcdonnell wrote:Alcoholism has been a problem in this country for centuries, there's nothing new about it at all. As far back as the 17th century, people were writing about the moral decline in britain, and the vast quantities of gin being consumed by the working classes. In fact, per head, people drank MORE than they do now. I read this mental figure, something like 10,000,000 barrels of gin were consumed a year. That's some drinking considering the population back then. In fact, I think that figure was just for London...!
I dunno Dave I started boozing at about 16 in the early/mid 90s and used to regularly get mashed beyond the point of no return. In our mid teens I saw mates hospitalised through drinking WAAYY too much spirits, nearly killing themselves, and I think that nearly every street fight I have ever had (not to that they were that regular..) was whilst I was pi55ed out of my face.DavidPayne wrote:Alcoholism is a huge problem in this country. I think the main difference these days is the age of the people surrendering their lives to drink.
When I went out for a Friday night, we'd have copius pints of ale - 8-10 pints, maybe a vodka chaser in the night club, something like that.
I go out with younger mates now, and they're on jugs of Vodka Red Bull at 730pm.
And absolutely wasted by 11. Wasted.
What's the point. I went out in the hope of having a laugh and grabbing a shag, rarely worked out that well but thats a different story, now they just want to get compltely brutalised.
It can't be healthy or sustainable.
I know I sound like an old fart but the drinking culture among younger drinkers now is unrecognisable to when I was doing it across the 90's,
mickeybeard wrote:Agreed. When I was young I drank to get pissed. I got bored of that pretty quickly, and while I continued to drink until I got pissed, I grew out of the whole hammering shots in the early evening thing.
There always have been, and there always will be, people who see booze as the be-all-and-end-all of a night out, rather than a means to an end. I suspect the 'rise' in binge drinking has as much to do with the fact that programmes like Booze Britain litter the TV schedules now. I know that Union St in Plymouth was just as bad in the early 90s that it is now, in terms of people staggering about pissed. And considerably worse in terms of people hopped up on speed and 'roids and looking to glass someone.
Apparently anyone that drinks more than 8 pints is a fool. Well, I must be a fool, because I still do that occasionally, and I did it 3-5 times a week as a younger man. Still, I'm a fool with decent degree, a job I enjoy, and a fianceé. I've had two friends that have been addicted to alchohol - one still is - so I know how horrific it can be, but for every person who's life is ruined by booze, there are many more that just enjoy it for what it is. Booze didn't turn me into an alchie, happy pills didn't turn me into a drug addict, horror movies didn't turn me into a psycho, hip hop music didn't turn me into a gangster, and having gay mates didn't turn me into a bumlord. Funny how life turns out, isn't it?
What's happened to Scott is terrible, but if things were as simple as money + time = hopeless pisshead, then every boxer, footballer ore person in the media would be fucked, and the Priory would have franchises in every major city. Maybe he has an addictive personality, maybe he is a poor judge of character who is easily swayed by peer pressure. Chances are , though, that he was made that way and, if he wasn't a famous boxer-turned-pisshead, he might just be a ned in a park with a bottle of Buckie.
PS- this isn't a dig at WW (although I'm sure it reads that way). I'm just trying to add a little balance to the debate about the 'evils of alcohol'
