Now Witter has shown he can put it together. It won't just be a case of Hatton overcoming problems for 4 rds and dominating the rest. Ricky had hell with Collazo and Magee. Witter's harder to hit and actually has footwork, unlike the stationary Collazo and Magee.

Beliece me, Ricky would take horrible shots coming in because he can't see 'em coming when they come from unorthodox angles.

Likewise, Witter would struggle with Hatton's pace but I think he's shown he has an extra level and that in a dangerous situation he will take it to another level.

It'd be a great fight. But we shouldn't complain about it never happening before. What if 1 of them had got ruined? We wouldn't have then both as world champs now, would we?

If Ricky beats Floyd, and I know he can, he can do whatever he wants. But he can't fight those big welters because it would be horrendous matchmaking from his POV. I hope he beats Floyd but that all his big fight options dry out, leaving him basically at 140 to clear things up.
If Ricky can pull it off against Floyd, expect Hatton to get the mother of all paydays against the golden boy. :TU:

Harris stopped Ukral and Hurtado quicker - maybe Harris is better than Tyszu

No one will remember Harris as an ATG harris but he was a dangerous top3 fighter with massive power, hs been top5 for years, and has been avoided by the top dogs. Harris was in his prime against Witter, most would say Tyszu was ring rusty, lacking stamina and old against Hatton. If Harris had fought Mbaiye, Rees or Torres or Malignaggi he'd probably a champ again.

Dominating and destroying Harris from round 1-7 and scoring a brutal KO is a more impressive performance than say Mayweather over Gatti. Because Harris is certainly a level above Gatti and the domination was just as impressive. Witter put on a genuine P4P level performance on Friday

I just hope Junior moves forward after this fight.

Would love to see him bag a unification.
Rees would'nt last 3 rounds with Witter(but I can't see Warren gicing up the title just like that)
And I would back Witter against the other 2 titlists. :TU:

beat rees in november

then maybe maliggangngigigi (whateva)

then i think hatton would have to fight him if he was to lose to PBF (unless hatton retires)

He'll never fight Witter.

He could go from a Mayweather defeat, to a rematch, to a DLH match, to a Cotto match, back down for a Casamoyor or Diaz. He could fight Judah, Malinaggi or Torres.

The latter three all less risk for more or equivalent reward.

I think in your last statment lies what WItter needs to do, that is to clean up some of the other fighters at the weight, if he is a unified champion of any type he already has a higher stock if he can beat Malinaggi and Torres (haven't seen ether fight but as mentioned by someone else where he has the beating of torres and clearly tihnks he can beat Malinaggi because he has called him out) then it will be pretty much imposible for Hatton to ignore.

I'm not intending to disrespect Witter, but come on... what the feck more can Hatton prove... He is giving the P4P #1 fighter all the advantages and people are still being critical, jesus.

If Hatton wins this fight its the single greatest achievement in British boxing. Even Randy Turpin had home advantage vs SRR.

If Hatton ducked Mayweather and fought say Ricardo Torres, Paulie Malginaggi or even Kermit Cintron - people would go absolutely ballistic... and righfully so. However, really thats all Witter still is.. just he happens to come from the UK. As I said before, say Hatton drops his fight vs Mayweather - fights Witter instead. Then what, is it Mayweather or Gavin Rees that will satisfy the British public more? After all Gavin Rees is a world class Brit who has called out Ricky.

That is one thing that annoys me with fickle boxing fans (I am as fickle as anyone I know) is when people moan that a fighter is scared of someone when they have signed to fight someone more renowned and generally considered more dangerous. Like the criticms Floyd Maweather got for "Ducking" Antonio "Beaten by Daniel Santos, lucky vs Joshua Clottey" Margarito and fighting DLH with Oscar having all the major advantages (even promoting the show!). Similarly in some quarters amazingly people said Roy Jones chose John Ruiz cause he was scared of Michaelswecki... a notion that doesn't make sense IMO.

No, because losing to P4P no1 and not losing his linear title at 140 doesn't hurt Hatton at all. Losing to someone below him that he dislikes/hates would hurt ALLOT more.

I'm semi-suprised they didnt go after Witter when he looked poor against Kotelnik/Lynes/Corley and was WBC Champ

At that point would HBO have bankrolled a Witter fight? Plus the long-term aim, as Graham stated, and was roundly ridiculed for, was to get a fight with Mayweather. The consensus best fighter in the world. Why drop down to Witter's level at that point?

(Not a dig at Witter but in many terms he was seemingly leagues down at that point)
Lest not pretend this is the first time Hatton has been offered a Mayweather fight. It was offered in 2004 instead of Mayweathers Corley fight. It was offered after Tyszu several times before Mayweather gave up and went after Mitchell/Judah. It was offered when Judah lost and it may have been offered instead of a Baldomir fight. Ray Hatton himself said there had been 3-5 offersto face Mayweather

Yes Hatton should certainly take a fight with Mayweather instead of Witter - but theres been over 20 opponents in the 7 years the fights been on the table that could have made way for Witter.

If HBO would allow Collazo/Urango/Maussa as opponents they'd surely have allowed Witter - that is debatable but I don't see what they bring over what Witter brings

I worry for Hatton if this is the case. Is he is going into the Mayweather fight thinking Witter is the better fighter of the two and he is taking the easy route against the US-based middling contender Mayweather. Hatton might be in shock as Mayweather is actually rather good and a far bigger fight then any other around the divisions.

From what I understand the previous offers were not 100% concrete and Floyd had set his sights on WW very soon after becoming a LWW. Mayweather did not leave to fight Mitchell in a fit of pique, wasn't a fight with Judah on the build then. The Judah fight was a desired target as Zab is very little risk and decent reward. Judah even messed-up his warm-up.

The other name floated is often Stewart but that fight had a purpose as mentioned.

Maussa had a title, Witter did not at that time and in many ways was about as useful as a pair of tits on a boar.

Collazo, again going on what I understand about the situation, was a late notice fight with the ad hoc intention of testing the WW waters, waters Floyd was operating in.

Urango was a fight that was put together with TV and impressing the USA in mind.

Urango was a middling fighter but in his fights prior to that one he was actually fun to watch. Castillo was set so it was a case of getting a title from Urango who is fun to watch or negotiating with Witter who was a nightmare, for some, to watch and might over inflate his value. Witter's prior US TV exposure saw the fans booing him. Urango may have brought ambivalence but Witter, again at that time and to a specific audience, brought a degree of revulsion.

In many interviews Billy Graham fielded Witter questions and stated that Witter was low on the list of priorities with Mayweather being high on them. No one thought the Mayweather talk was serious and ridculed him, now the fight is sealed. So the talk was borne out in this case but still people are not happy.

Witter looked good the other night but for many who do not understand the true techniques of boxing, like me, Witter looked really poor for over fifty rounds of boxing prior to that. Now he has looked good for seven rounds so he is well capable of getting a buzz going off his own back but reading some of the talk post-Harris makes me recall that quote (a good line in a poor film, must be as I cannot remember the films name, about a single job well done) "Let's not start sucking each others dicks just yet".

Witter is coming across well in the ring itself and looks a more relaxed proposition in interviews (apart from when they are, sorry to say about a man I respect, idiotically hijacked, must be a Sheffield thing) so lets see if he can maintain this.
You make arguments for each case BUT hes had 7 years and 20+ fights to make it happen. The Maussa fight had no purpose and meant allot less than a Witter win would have meant. Maussa has lost to journeymen before and after. The Collazo fight meant nothing again, yes he tested the waters at 147 but ran back to 140 after looking bad against a sub-par belt holder, a Witter win would have looked better. Now this brings us to Urango - the fight should have definately happened then. Urango was possibly coming off gift and was consdiered the weakest belt holder. Witter had a WBC belt and it would have meant something big to beat Witter where as a win over Urango means relatively nothing,

With regard to Mayweathers offers - they weren't 100% because they were flat out turned down and no negotiations were made. Team Hatton weren't considering the fight from 2004-2006. They could have made that fight at pretty much any stage but didn't

If Hatton loses badly to Mayweather and Witter keeps winning and looking good Hatton will be looking pretty bad for not facing Witter over this 7 year period and it will really hurt his legacy. If Hatton wins and has fights with Cotto/Mosley/Delahoya on the horizon then fair play to him.

Posted: 10 Sep 2007, 11:07

Witter has done all that has been asked of him to get the fight on with Ricky, these days he even speaks about Ricky in a respectful manner.

If Ricky beats Mayweather then I'd expect Ricky to go on and fight the winner of Mosley-Cotto, but if he loses I think Witter 'should' be at the top of queue along with possibly the loser of Mosley-Cotto. I've heard that Hatton-DLH could happen next irrespective irrespective of the PBF result, but I hope it doesn't when there are meaningful fights left for Hatton.

Hatton-Oscar would generate a fortune, but the fight has far more marketing potential than it does substance IMO. Hattons already minted beyond belief, he doesn't need a testimonial against Oscar.

If Hatton loses to Mayweather he has to fight Witter...END OF!!! :D :TU:

Witter's last fight has changed things somewhat. He has to keep looking like that. Otherwise it's 2 fights a year, voluntary, mandatory, etc etc, for a long time.

Hatton will come home someday. Of that I am pretty sure. If it's cable/Sky, who fills his coffers with PPV money but the bloody Brits? Who else is there to fight in Britain? No one really wants to come over here to fight.

Of course the fight should happen. Can you imagine Man Utd and Liverppol or Chelsea not playing each other because they ahve 'bigger' games in europe. They are both establsihed world champions, british and would sell out any british arena quick fast. I like Hatton a lot, but if he really thought he would beat Junior, then he would have taken this fight in the past 7 years. Thats a long time to avoid someone calling you out.

Junior can take a great shot, carries one punch knock out power, is fast of both hand and foot and has a good boxing brain and plenty of bottle. It would be a cracker. It HAS to happen. For the record, i think Junior stops him inside of 6 rounds.I thought that years ago, and nothing has changed since.

Call me a rampant "glass is full" person but maybe the logic is "fight the best fighter in the world and test myself" or "fight one of my two rivals in Britain".

Many a fighter hits harder than Floyd, are they better than him?

The difference is Hatton did not ALWAYS have the option of fighting PBF.

He fought so many unworthy people when he could have fought Witter.

Witter might not be better - but he has a better chance of knocking hatton cold than PBF does, thats what worries Hatton.

Apart from KT - he has fought non punchers, imo

I really believe Hatton is scared of what Witter woiuld do to his rep.

1)Hatton could fill any venue in the country fighting Junior Witter or Bugs Bunny. Not a valid point.

2)What makes you say Hatton ran? Sure he didn't fight him, but saying he ran from Junior Witter, but ran towards Kostya Tszyu is lunacy.

3)You're suggestions that Witter vs. Hatton would be a best of the best showdown akin to any of the ones you mentioned is simply comic. Ricky vs. Floyd is the equivalent of one of them! Which is EXACTLY WHY HE IS NOT fighting Junior fecking Witter!

4)WHAT?! HOW?!! he is about to fight the best pound for pound fighter in the world!!!

To summise, you have to remember that Ricky is so much bigger and better than Junior, he's so far above him, and unless Junior makes himself a tasty option for Hatton, tastier than the likes of Mayweather De La Hoya and Cotto, nobody except a few hate fuelled people yourself will give a crap.
