Best bet I ever made was Eubank to beat Benn - made it all the better as the press were all going for Nige.

But I was pretty sure Eubank had a good chin, and would take Benn into the later rounds. He'd stood up to the best Logan had thrown no troubles at all, and Logan had Benn all over the shop with his punches.

No one was sure just how serious Eubank was at the time though, and it was only the Benn fight that showed us that what a huge fighting heart he had.
That fight was as near as intense at Benn's ill fated fight with the Gman. I think ref Richard Steele said it was maybe the greatest fight he'd ever been involved in, which was saying something.

Yep Steele said afterwards that is was 'arguably' 'one of' the best fights he'd ever refereed. But these days he doesn't mention it.

Kind of like Bob Arum hyping up Benn in 88-89-90-91 as the Second Coming and now forgotten him (like saying Pavlik is the best middleweight puncher since Hearns).

I knew Eubank would beat Benn because he was good. Anyone who followed him on Eurosport knew that if anyone won early (in Benn-Eubank) it was going to be Eubank because he was so deceptive, he could check and counter, he could feint and check, he could slip and switch, he had balance on the backfoot with booming belief and could bang abit (and had finishing instinct to boot). Benn only had a punchers chance, but Eubank's chin took loud Logan hits.

I wasn't suprised when Eubank almost stopped it in the second, the bell saved Benn.

Sadly, for those who attended, Benn-Eubank I topped a truly appalling bill.

Good fight to make up for it though, eh?
