Varghese Johnson was left out of the India squad for the championships, as he hadn't impressed in a recent competition.

Maybe they are holding Obed back as he is only a baby and one for the future, but as ABA champion he deserves to go.
I boxed Obed in the ABA’s last year. Having watched him I was sure I’d be too mature and too strong but I struggled to catch the slippery git and he beat me clearly. Still getting stick for it now.
Very fast, extremely long limbed, a good mover and very quick hands!
Definitely lacking strength and punch power which is probably needed at light heavy, but a super talent reminds me a bit of Khan, style-wise.
He got stopped in an international competition recently but that was from a body shot when winning 10-0.
The computers suit him perfectly and providing he can keep it at range and he can do very well.

He was only 17 when he won the ABA's, as I am reminded occassionally, he may still be that now
He also medaled at the world Juniors.

I'd deffinatly send him out there then because he has a lot to learn the occasion will do him good and who knows by 2008 he may have gained some power.

Other than dificult to hit what is he like as a fighter?

Joe Murray has a great chance , just What ABAboxing says he needs a bit of luck in the draw.
He has Boxed very well this year picked up Medals on the road and mixed in good company.
I do think it would be great to get a medal but most of the GB team will think a quarter final place at this tournament would be their Gold medal as it means Automatic qualification to the 2008 Olympics.
With that in Mind i reckon GB will get at least 3 possibly more to that stage of this tournament.

as daft as it might sound but a worlds event could make it easier to qualify than a euro one due to the higher % of tough teams in europe than in the worlds

obviously depending on the draw

i think its near impossible for a good draw in europe

Not necessarily so, Perkins has been in bad form recently, losing to kids he beat with ease in the past. Best bet for a medal is a bit generous to Neil

Britain relies on a good draw to progress in a tournament, but with there being so many excellent boxers, a good draw will be impossible. Britain gets blinded by the success at tournaments like the Commonwealth games, which is a poor Tournament.

I wish the GB team all the best, but most if not all will be out before the medal stages. That’s not being unpatriotic its just reality.

They can prove me wrong; it’s up to them to do the business!

Danny Price will have a very hard job to beat Russo, While David Price has every chance of beating Tomasovic.

How come DeGale and Webb are both boxing at 75kg?

I know Webb is Welsh but its the Great Britain team and i thought every country could only have 1 boxer at each weight.

At the World Championships its England, Scotland & Wales. It could have caused some problems if they managed to get boxers to the qualifing stages. Because it will be a Great Britain Team at the Olympics and then they would have to decide who 1s going, but at the end of the day there was no fear of that hapening!

Friday sees next round of competition begin With Bantamweight Joe Murray and Bradley Saunders having there 2nd contest.

Joe and Bradley are joined in the next round by Darren Langley , Khalid Said , Frankie Gavin , Tony Jeffries and David Price.

Its a british team that went over and stephen simmons is representing britain at 91kg, he lost a close descison to price recently but hopefully give a good account of himself over there

Okay, thought the worlds was nations (scot, eng, wales etc..) but the olympics was UK ?

CHICAGO -- Two Ugandan fighters and one from Armenia were being sought by Chicago police on Thursday after going missing from their delegations at the World Boxing Championships, organizers said.

Doug Arnot of the organizing committee said the three fighters had left their respective delegations, apparently voluntarily, without contacting their trainers or team officials, and for that reason the case had been turned over to police as a missing persons search.

"When the delegations from these countries told us of the absences, we contacted the Chicago police department which will investigate the matter," Arnot said.

Chicago was given the job of hosting the championships in May after the event was withdrawn from Moscow.

Amateur boxing powerhouse Cuba chose not to send a team rather than risk fighters defecting. That decision came in the wake of the attempted defections of two Cuban boxers during the Pan American Games in July.

Their attempted defection followed last December's loss of Olympic champions Odlanier Solis, Yan Barthelemi and Yuriorquis Gamboa who quit the team while training in Venezuela for the Pan American Games.
