Graham Earl got outboxed by Ricky Burns and went on to earn well and get a world-title shot.

Pickering is a different type of fighter, but as others point out, he's performed well until fairly recently.

I haven't seen the fight, I hasten to add.

I saw Rhino ringside, and sent him a message to say the beard wasn't working.

He also needs to work on his, "I know the camera's there but honest I'm not trying to get in shot".

Shot of holding up a card saying "Hello Mum", he couldn't have been more conspicious.

Rendall, or so he told me on Friday night, will be made mandatory challenger tomorrow.

Isnt it nieve to right a man off so quickly, looking at past performances and company Pickering has boxed in and won its fair to say that on paper Sean Hughes was a level below him (taking nothing away from Hughes because he is good and better than what he gets credit for). Dosnt it occur to some of you that just maybe Pickering rightly or wrongly took Hughes very lightly. This dosnt mean its the end for him, he slipped up, dosnt mean he cant come back, he is still British champ and im sure if Hughes now gets a crack (rightly so) Pickering will be more focused and up for it. He has performed better and beat better fighters so I believe its more likely that Pickering had an off night

I understand your comparison here, David, and further acknowledge Marc's contribution.

But I have to say I don't think it stands up. Graham is not a slick boxer whatsoever and Burns was really in the mood to use his physical advantages. If Graham had have been bullied and outmuscled by Burns, THAT comparison would have been fair.

None of Pickering's usual attributes were anywhere to be seen. It was a shocker. Hey, I've got a lot of time for Esham and everyone has an off night but I haven't seen one quite so bad - and so out of the blue - for a long time.

Yep Ian. I have to defer to the fact you saw the fight. I haven't.

And I'm probably swayed by an appreciation of Esham's style and personality, I don't want it - the presumption he's shot - to be true.

I also appreciate the differences in Earl and Pickering's style and the manner of their defeats.

When Pickering linked up with Carl Greaves I couldn't help thinking of the Audley situation - the fighter telling the trainer what to do

perhaps there were some person issues ongoing before the fight that affected eshams build up and consequent performance, everyone is allowed a bad day at the office, unfortunately as a professional boxer of some pedigree your bad office day is more highlighted than most.

ill try and sort out a chat with esham, and see where we and he go from there.

Of course Mark is correct to say we shouldn't write anyone off too hastily as this has been proved many times over to be foolish...and it's true EP has been boxing to a good standard until pretty recently.

However I would say it is the responsibility of any fighter to come to the ring prepared.....I don't really see why you would "take someone lightly", especially given Pickering's considerable experience, not to mention the fact he was recently in an interview on BBN making some pretty big noises about the future.

Add to that that Hughes is clearly an ambitious fighter who keeps in shape, having already had one crack at the Brit title and unlucky not to win another fight against Corcoran in many people's eyes.

Carl Greaves said that Esham had other things on his mind, hence his poor showing. He even considered pulling his charge out of the contest in the fourth, but Pickering wouldn't let him.

Esham, however, better seriously buck his ideas up unless he wants to get flattened by Rendall Munroe, who told me that Pickering wouldn’t last three rounds with him.

I really dont think Munroe would stop pickering, I really believe Pickering, as long as he is prepared right mentally would win and I think he would take a defence of his British title more seriously

I’ve always thought that Rendall would have the tools to beat Pickering. But you’ve been in with both men, Marc, so you’re the man in the know.

Ovbiously you wouldn’t set any plan of action based on Esham’s most recent performance, in what was most definitely an off night. But Pickering seems to be slowing down - Steve Gethin said as much, though was full of praise for him.

Just been told by Rendall that the fight is going out to purse bids, but its looking likely that it will happen on the next Carl Froch card at the Nottingham Arena in March.

Dont think he should retire after one terrible performance, silly to retire while he's still British champ. Plenty of fighters/champs have had poor performances but then come back with better ones, sometimes it depends on the circumstances

mr payne..

for your information, and im sure real-meal would vouch for this, it was him who was sat there saying 'come closer rhino and we can get on tv' whereas i said ..'im not spud, im quite happy where i am' .... and presuming i was out of camera sight continued to watch and listen and take some pictures of froch who was posing for some of his family members next to me.

so..

its mr real-meal who is the potential friday fight night extra, not myself. i declined his invite to enter his personal space (which was incidentally littered with jelly bean packets, empty coke bottles, undelivered first class post and other items including superdrug disposable cameras with flash !! :TU: )

however..thanks for spotting me david, did not get the opportunity to see it for myself, and its designer stubble not beard, my boyfriend loves it !!

Also I dont think the results I had with them both should be any indication of what the result will be between them. Again I think it is circumstances some of the time and I know NorthEastBoxingFan said that its the fighters responsibility to be to be fully prepared, in an ideal world yes but some are not so fortunate to have a smooth life outside the ring but bills still need paying and stupidly most think, myself included, oh I'll be alright and think they are until the day and you dont get that nervous feeling because you got so much other crap going on in your life, some lucky few can put things to the side for fight night or use it to their advantage but not all are capable of that no matter how much they try or convince themselves. I could not afford to turn down the Munroe fight because of legal bills and court fees so needed the money, I wasnt in any emotional state to fight because of whats being happening in life outside the ring, if I could I would have postponed the fight. Taking nothing away from Munroe because he boxed good and was up for it, and its not an excuse because I take responsibilty for doing it but maybe if I wasnt in the emotion I was in going into that fight it would have been a different outcome. Thats why you cant compare thier results againts me for the winner of this fight.......but more importantly thats why I want Rendall Munroe to have a rematch with me so we can see for sure because if I was to win id return the favour and have the best out of three,

Hi Marc, read your post at work earlier.
Obviously it's down to you guys and you guys only at the end of the day what shape your in when you fight, and in an ideal world , as you say, there'd be nothing to distract you from the job of keeping fit etc...
But I will admit I felt I'd been a bit naive when I read your post......obviously life throws us obstacles and in your case you've been thrown a shit load more than any one individual deserves and to keep it in check like you have and come back and do what you have just shows that you have great reserves of personal strength and some good people around you or perhaps both........and OBVIOUSLY you are not doing this solely for the fun of it  , but it is a serious second or first source of income for you guys and it was naive of me not to appreciate that too.
I have a close friend in the game who mixes it at a similar level to yourself so I should've been as aware as most people that sometimes the phone rings when you would probably prefer, in an ideal world, for maybe another 3 weeks notice but money is money and bills are bills, so don't think I was on here meaning that to make you sound unprofessional, as you obviously are (professional) to get to the high level you have got to.
Just thought I had better set the record straight on that score :TU:

ps. best of luck with your future endeavours be they both in the ring or out.

Interesting post Marc, people often forget that boxers reply as much if not more on their mental outlook and condition, as their physical conditioning. You could be in tip top shape physically but if youre not right emotionally then its no good. Its very possible that Esham simply had a bad night that he will come back from, but he did take quite a drubbing in the course of the fight and it was worrying to see him getting hurt so bad by a fighter who isnt (with all due respect) a great puncher. Sometimes fighters who rely on their speed and reflexes can lose it overnight, ...I think Esham should be sure what went wrong before he fights again...

All I could see between Froch and McCracken's shoulders in the post fight interview was you. Arms crossed across your clipboard. You weren't even pretending to talk to someone or make notes:-)

That was defo a 'I can't grow it on my head, but I can grow it on my chin' beard.
