He was the best thing about Sky's coverage back in 1999-2001, best thing about BBC's coverage and now best thing about Setanta's coverage.
Jim Watt used to be well worth listening to, but he looks bored to tears doing the never ending swimming baths circuit on Sky. It must be next to impossible to feign excitment for your 37th Ian Napa or Martin Power fight, I guess.
Nicky "Member of MENSA" Piper is just awful. Please, please retire Nicky. And if you must bore people half to death, do it in your own home.
Johnny Nelson is like having a 7 year old on who has OD'd on Red Bul in your front rooml. If only he'd worked himself up even half as much for his own fights as he does for a card which barely attracts 60 paying customers maybe suicide rates would have been lower during his "world" title reign.
Barry McGuigan? That he needed extensive notes - and I mean page after page - of notes from Bob Mee and to steal Buncie's knowledge at Sky says it all, really? Who else? Duke "OH HE IS FINISHED WITH EVERY SHOT" McKenzie? LOL!
Unless Mee's notes says "you could see Joe blogs getting tired in the 7th round" or "Fighter A is hurting Fighter B to the body" - then notes doesn't say it all.... We have had this conversation before I believe. I don't think US TV have flown Bob aswell as McGuigan. Was Bob used on Setanta's show where McGuigan picked up Bunce's faults.
I partially agree with your views on Nelson - I think his tone is fine, but I cannot help thinking "Your a bit of a hypocrit" with some of the comments Johnny says.
Nicky is alright, not great but doesn't do any harm. Holds his own - used to come to life more when Lennox was fighting. Not exciting telly granted, but not cringe worthy also.... bit like Glen McCory.
Jim Watt is criminally underused at Sky - He IS the best in the business, in the world - the only one who comes close is Teddy Atlas in the States. Why is Jim only used for Commentary on the main event (and thats it) these days is beyond me. The more Jim the better as far as I am concerned. The Friday Night Shows would be much better and much cheaper if they only had Jim as the expert.
Bunce is better when Paul Dempsey is their controlling things - and when he was at Sky I did like him alot. Since then, aside from his VERY GOOD documentary segments at the Beeb - he's been a characture of himself and its been more about him than the boxing. He spends a good five minutes of fighting analysis talking about "his mate" Bob Sheridan if he is doing the commentary - and how he talks so much.
No doubt he has more knowledge than most of us here combined - and I am sure more than Watt on some aspects of the game. But Watt shows his knowledge of the time - doesn't make comments like "lets hope Ricky gets a cut, trust me that what we all want to see". Or that Clinton Woods was pretty poor in the first meeting with Gonzales and that the reason they are fighting is so that he can set the record straight!!!
Get Bob Mee on the mic for some of these bigger events. That man is the second best British analyser IMO. He is like an encyclopedia and he's not big headed about it, but displays that knowledge all the time and knows how to read a fight.
Merely my take.
