It was always going to be a closely fought contest. Both fighters actually looked better than I expected. It was certainly a fair old pace they kept up.

No - as I posted over on the Setanta thread I thought it was a cracking little fight with no shortage of skill, guts and what can probably only best be summed up as "shenanigans".

just watched this fight via sky plus and i quite enjoyed it.. mayorga looked hungry to win and vargas must of been just plain hungry with a gut like that.. round 9 was especially good!

What kind of level do you think Mayorga can mix it in now?

Good fight wasn't it, both a lot better than expected - was Mayorga actually playing the Matador, his unlikely nickname, for awhile there in the end?

Round 9 was a classic I thought, the very brave Vargas looked like he might pull things round for awhile, but Mayorga showed equal heart in there.

Unlike Kermit Cintron, who was massively dissapointing after his last fight. He really looks a bit mentaly weak in there sometimes, and I reckon Paul Williams will batter him. And Margarito would do him again as well. What was all that rolling about at the end? Bizzare.

Brilliantly timed stopage by the referee.

Karmazin looks an uncrowned champ. He's a handful for anyone in the world.

I was thinking that myself. Fighting last night as a middleweight, yeah he was slow and could not be considered any sort of a threat at that weight, but I didn't think he looked like the type of fighter who was shot like a lot of us were expecting. I think the Trinidad and DLH beatings had far more of an effect on Vargas than Mayorga, despite those of the latter being more recent. If he can get down to 154 lbs or particularly 147 lbs (as he has said himself), I think it would be a tough fight for any Welter to take, Cotto included. I'd be very happy with Cotto-Mayorga next year to see if Cotto can dish out what Tito and DLH did.

The commentator kept mentioning potential fights with Cotto and Mayweather but even if he could get back down there again it's clear he can't operate at that level - he would get spanked.

Maybe he can sort of fill the hole that Gatti left and get various title shots for a couple of years, based on the excitement that he brings. I can see that happening to be honest...

Pavlik might look at him as a potential opponent, he should win but it would probably be wildly exciting for 5/6 rounds until Pavlik got to him....

WOW what a fight, Gatti-Ward type stuff. Mayorgas the most exciting fighting in the fight and really was at his best against a pretty slow, easy to find fat target. Mayorga was up against it - bigger man, tight defense, decent skill that Vargas brought.

Does anyone think Mayorgas been unfairly rated due to him going up too high in weight against bigger ATGs? Mayorgas skills get vastly underrated imo. Very fast hands for a powerpuncher and good accuracy, combos, . His footwork and face first style is what lets him down ofcourse

What now for Mayorga? Forrest 3? Mosley? Cotto? Mayweather? Spinks 2?

Mayorga was thrilling. Gutsy, committed and in decent shape. Of course, he would look more ponderous at 147, but I wonder what a Margarito fight would look like. Could be another thriller.

Mayweather is all wrong for Mayorga - Cotto vs Mayorga would be a good un.... Yes, favouring Cotto big style - but Cotto isn't that hardest to hit and I think Mayorga has the power to hurt him. Cotto doesn't have the handspeed of Tito.

Mayorga is great entertainment. I was genuinely excited to see the bout appear on the Setanta schedule. I mean what would you prefer, these two or a Taylor or Hopkins fight?

Mayorga's only good at being mouthy and Insulting the fighters badly at press conferences.

I really enjoyed all 3 fights, Roman is a real favourite of mine, can't wait to see him get his title shot.

Loved Mayorga bouncing on the turnbuckle at the end of round 2, whipping the fans up.

Great action all round. Big respect to Jesse Feliciano, he gave it his all and took some big, big shots but kept coming and had Kermit in trouble a few times. Better than his record suggests.

What weight was Mayorga and Vargas fighting at? They were fighting for a Super Middle weight trinket of some description. When I saw it was SMW I couldn't help get a panic on, given that Don King and allegedly have worked together in the past, got a vivid image in my head of a press conference announcing Joe Calzaghe's next fight against a former 2 time WBC and former WBA and IBF champion.

No would I - it would probably be the biggest money Super Middleweight fight out there for Joe.

Mayorga wasn't really ruined - he's just not that great. But certainly good enough to score some good wins and is a great character.

He has something left. Though not Joe!

Absolutely no chance of it. Mayorga was much smaller than Vargas who was blown up anyway. Mayorga weighed under 160 lbs and looked fat in the build up to the fight. He is going down to Welterweight again (or at least try). That was a one off being a big money fight compared to anything available to him and he won't be there again. I'm surprised people on here could actually even think that he'd stay up there or that somebody would try to get him a fight against Pavlik or Calzaghe. I know we've seen some farcical things in boxing, but this would not happen.

Money talks... though John, and Mayorga hasn't got a track record of refusing a fight because of the weight.... If the money is good, Mayorga will sign.
