I have two that are not action shots but I like them because of how different and rare the expressions are. One is Ali holding his mother like a baby and the other is Tyson as a young boy talking to Cus.
How about how Louis face changed from his younger years to more lax soft face at the time he fought Charles and then more to when he fought Marciano and after.
I spent an hour talking to Louis, sitting in seats at the Landover Md. Capitol Center during and after the weigh the day before the Ali-Evangalista fight.
Enviable oppotunity....he was a great man. To have had an hour of his time in discussion is definately valuable.
Buzz, he wouldn't have given you 2 seconds of his time.
Because you don't know sh*t about boxing.
.
Cmon gran...you and I both know Joe would talk to anyone in the day's he was a presence in Las Vegas. He didn't read your resume before he would talk to you. So even I could have chatted with the man.....I imagine you probably had a conversation or two with him. If so I'm sure he recognized your boxing knowledge...my guess is he didn't miss some of your other character qualities as well.

You're right Buzz about Louis talking to anyone. One time I took my wife to Las Vegas. Joe was working as a greeter in front of one of the hotels(I think it was the Thunderbird) He's standing there with this big cowboy hat taking pictures with everyone. Joe had two faces:that tragic sad face and that face like a kid ,happy with a big smile. I'm working my way up the stairs. I want a picture with him and my wife. He's more than happy. He'got his arm on her shoulder and he's got the widest friendliest smile I've ever seen. I didn't want him to get away without asking him a boxing question,so I asked him who was the best fighter today.Joe always struggled a bit when he talked, but looked at me very seriously and said slowly"Muhammad Ali is a very good fighter" With that I figured I could always say I talked with Joe Louis. I begin to enter the casino when I hear Louis say to me"I trained real hard for Schmelin' but said if I didn't knock him out in the first round I'd be all spent" He was smiling, probably half kidding. I got to thinking. Joe Louis startng a conversation with me about one of the biggest sporting events of the 20th century. Joe Louis was a lot more than a greeter standing in front of a hotel
this is a very touching post. it takes us on a trip through america, through time and through a mans life.
and ends with a great and tragic truth revealed through irony. one of the best posts i ever read on here.
(delillo would make a novel out of this)
