I'm sorry I can't be of any help, since I've never heard that story. I doubt it carries credibility though. If you could count on Joe Frazier to do anything, it was take punishment. Of all the boxing styles, his as the swarmer was the most conducive to being KO'd, he fought in the best Heavyweight period of all-time, fought some of the best wars in history, & was never knocked out (10-Count).

Well, from what I remember of the stories, I always took it as being just like your moniker here. Lights out. But, again, that's just my interpretation of something I heard a few times 28 or 29 years ago. So ...

C'mon dude,, like Boxbuzz said, if you know something, speak up. Even if it's only secondhand info that may have gotten twisted into the form that I heard as a kid.

As for specifics, I don't have anything more than what I've already said.

For some reason, I always pictured the incident as being a sparring session between Frazier & someone along the lines of a Jerry Judge or a Tony Ventura type who just happened to land the right shot, at the right time. Know what I mean?

As for Marvis, yeah, I remember hearing about those KOs he suffered occasionally in the gym. One story in particular had him getting knocked spark out by a Canadian clubfighter by the name of Gaston Berube that they'd brought in for sparring.

Marvis had some nice skills, but he just wasn't built for taking shots. I remember he was even rocked briefly in his pro debut against the very ordinary Roger Troupe. It's actually a bit remarkable that despite this flaw, he was only beaten/KO'd twice. This despite fighting some other decent bangers like Bonecrusher, "Quick" Tillis & others.

Gotta give the kid credit, for what he lacked in his chin he made up for with heart. Which carried him to success as a pro, with the exception of those two first round disasters that is.

Oh I don't know granberry, some of your rumors are at least entertaining....don't be so hard on yourself. We love nothing more than lighting up a Havana seeded cigar...(grown in Jamaica of course) and contemplating some of your stories. Who knows maybe you'll finish writing that "docu drama" the one youv'e taken some creative liscence with on that third round between Ernie and Ali and share it with us sometime.
