How about Bruce Curry vs Monroe Brooks
Jesus yes!.... hell of a fight! and that ko was one for the books, Brooks went down like he'd been shot!. Curry was said to be never the same fighter after that. Currys fights with Benitez and Hearns were great wars too...Broncano wrote:How about Bruce Curry vs Monroe Brooks
Hmmm, I think you are right about the 10-8 4th round for Lyle. I guess that is why I am not a judge.Goodnight, Irene wrote:I would actually be more comfortable with a 10-8 round for Lyle. When you think about it, outside of the knockdowns it was a reasonably close round, probably an edge to Foreman when he had Lyle trapped on the ropes with a minute remaining --- but I'm comfortable calling it more or less an even round before you factor in the knockdowns, consider - it's 10-8 Lyle, then level after Foreman drops him, & bring it back down to 10-8 following another Lyle knockdown, factoring in the, "must" part as BoxBuzz said. Just my take.
Using that card, I had it 38-37 for Lyle after four rounds.
I remember that one...what a fight that was.Broncano wrote:How about Bruce Curry vs Monroe Brooks
Good on you for mentioning the Caveman Lee - John Locicero slugfest. An under appreciated classic!silkov wrote:Jesus yes!.... hell of a fight! and that ko was one for the books, Brooks went down like he'd been shot!. How about Efren Torres vs Chartai Chinoi 1.... another little guy slugfest!...
Frank Fletcher vs just about anyone.... but especially Earnie Singletary and Caveman Lee....
and Lee was in another good one with John Locicero....
Chacon vs Frias was another good one.... Chacon was in so many great fights, too many sadly....
Chacon vs Lopez is one to watch and see Bobby close to his best and actually slipping shots....
Not a fair comparison as you are harkening back to that "better era" of which I mentioned. That is one of the most amazing things in sports.....if you are as old as I am you have witnessed the average HW fight "slow down". These fights these days are like cold mollases covered versions of the old HW fights. I thought Tua-Ike was a rare exception.dempseyfire wrote:ESPN Classic recently showed Doug Jones-Zora Folley II which was a helluva slugfest. Great fight.
Some of my other favorites: Chuvalo-Patterson, Gonzales-Carbajal, Morales-Pacquao I, Saad-Lopez both fights, Baer-Nova I (you want to see two hard-punching Heavyweights keep up a fast pace, this puts Tua-Ike to shame), Ward-Augustus

Poor conditioning and excess weight. One thing some people don't understand is that looking solid and muscular does not equate to being in shape . . .Peter, Rahman, McCline, Maskaev, Mercer, Bruno etc. are all fighters who in many fights didn't look "fat" but they were in the vicinity of being 30-40 lbs overweight for a professional prizefighter. Max Baer was a big man . . over 80' reach, shade under 6'3, shoulders as wide as a dining table. But he stayed in the 210-220 range b/c that enabled him to go a hard 12-15 rounds. If he had cut down on his roadwork, lifted weights, and come in at a bloated 240, it wouldn't have helped him in the slightest, not in terms of power, strength, anything. Just quicker lactic acid buildup and him gasping for air by the 5th.BoxBuzz wrote:Not a fair comparison as you are harkening back to that "better era" of which I mentioned. What the hell has slowed these guys down so much? Is it the whale blubber they are sporting these days?
I was going to say how happy I am to be in contact with you again but you had to bring up my states record against Peruvians.Broncano wrote:Looked what the cat dragged in....Tomato-Can wrote:Good on you for mentioning the Caveman Lee - John Locicero slugfest. Welcome back dear old pal![]()
Eventhough this place has changed wuite a bit since your departure you'll find out that in reality is still the same old madhouse. We even have our old friend Paret (spelled backwards) running the halls causing havoc from time to time. He goes by a different name though.
P.S: Washington state fighters are still 0 and 3 against Peruvians
that plus it s now "exeptable"for heavyweights to stand and hug or stand a think about throwing a punch for a few rounds and then throw a coupledempseyfire wrote:Poor conditioning and excess weight. I still believe no Heavyweight should be weighing over 225 lbs unless they are 6'5 or taller.
I think you're thinking of Machen. Folley was knocked out in 3 rounds by Sonny.Terry D wrote:Great battle. Doug looked done early but built-up steam as the fight went on. Great to see two heavweights going shoulder-to-shoulder and fighting at a brisk pace, plus it is surprising, given the nature of Zora's losses to this point, that Zora went the distance with Liston.
