Chacon vs Lopez is one to watch and see Bobby close to his best and actually slipping shots....

Hmmm, I think you are right about the 10-8 4th round for Lyle. I guess that is why I am not a judge.

That first knockdown was a strange one, though. It didn't look like Foreman was hit with anything big, & at the moment he went down he didn't appear to be hurt with any punches. But then he gets back up & as the ref gives him the standing count, he has a pretty concerned look on his face, like his confidence has been sapped.

I love the shot of Foreman at the end of the first round, too. He's just been holding on, having been seriously hurt at the end of the round. He's sitting on his stool & he leans forward, staring fixedly at Lyle & chewing his gumshield. It looks as though he's thinking, "I've got my work cut-out for me here."

Doubtful he had any idea what he was actually in for!

What a fight that was.

You couldn't tell which way it was going to go, until Tommy iced Juan with 2 vaunted Right hands!!!!!

How about Hearns vs Barkley 1 and 2... both brutally exciting fights... and one other that hasnt been mentioned I think is Duran vs Barkley... great fight and total masterclass by Duran in infighting and 'oldmanning' a bigger, younger and stronger opponent....

Chacon might be the king of slugfests. His 2nd fight with Boza-Edwards is one of the most underrated fights ever.
Saad Muhammad had a number of great fights as well. In particular, the 2nd Lopez fight. It was brutal.
Silkov also mentioned the 2nd Johnson-Saad Muhammad fight, which you don't hear a lot about. It was pretty good as well.

Just this week they showed Matthew Franklin vs Marvin Johnson I in ESPN en Espanol.
While not precisely on the top 10 slugfest list what a classic american style elbow-to elbow wonderful match that was!

Ok I'm not sure if this was mentioned but it is a modern day classic and it may rate as the last truly great heavyweight fight...(can someone name one more recent that can compare?)

Ike Vs Tua....It's like Foreman and Lyle on bennies... except nobody's goin down.

I purchased Ibeabuchi-Tua along with a couple of other fights (I know there's YouTube nowadays, but c'mon, YouTube isn't something you can dust off & show your kids one day) &, as I said in the Legendary Let-Downs thread, this one I just do not get the excitement about.

Classic slugfest!? One for the ages!? Foreman-Lyle minus the knockdowns!? I'm just curious as someone who felt this was a terrible let-down given the hype, what is it about this one precisely that floats so many fight fans' boat?

Well if pace is any criteria it was a throwback to a better time. More punches exchanged than any other modern day HW fight and lots of see sawing....lot of pretty good punches landed and very little retreating going on.

Either of them on that night would have prevailed over just about any other HW at the time other than possibly Lewis. They both showed determination, energy and great chins.

Some folks thought Tua won so even the decision was controversial.

Moorer vs Alex Stewart

When Moorer moved up from the heavy limit I thought he was going to be a monster - he delivered these two classic slugfest before getting fat and sleep walking through the remainder of his career. Shame.

ESPN Classic recently showed Doug Jones-Zora Folley II which was a helluva slugfest. Great fight.

Some of my other favorites: Chuvalo-Patterson, Gonzales-Carbajal, Morales-Pacquao I, Saad-Lopez both fights, Baer-Nova I (you want to see two hard-punching Heavyweights keep up a fast pace, this puts Tua-Ike to shame), Ward-Augustus

That is one of the most amazing things in sports.....if you are as old as I am you have witnessed the average HW fight "slow down". These fights these days are like cold mollases covered versions of the old HW fights. I thought Tua-Ike was a rare exception.

What the hell has slowed these guys down so much? Is it the whale blubber they are sporting these days?

Eventhough this place has changed wuite a bit since your departure you'll find out that in reality is still the same old madhouse. We even have our old friend Paret (spelled backwards) running the halls causing havoc from time to time. He goes by a different name though.

Poor conditioning and excess weight. One thing some people don't understand is that looking solid and muscular does not equate to being in shape . . .Peter, Rahman, McCline, Maskaev, Mercer, Bruno etc. are all fighters who in many fights didn't look "fat" but they were in the vicinity of being 30-40 lbs overweight for a professional prizefighter. Max Baer was a big man . . over 80' reach, shade under 6'3, shoulders as wide as a dining table. But he stayed in the 210-220 range b/c that enabled him to go a hard 12-15 rounds. If he had cut down on his roadwork, lifted weights, and come in at a bloated 240, it wouldn't have helped him in the slightest, not in terms of power, strength, anything. Just quicker lactic acid buildup and him gasping for air by the 5th.

I still believe no Heavyweight should be weighing over 225 lbs unless they are 6'5 or taller.

I was going to say how happy I am to be in contact with you again but you had to bring up my states record against Peruvians. Some sores just never heal.........Speaking of old sores, I'm saddened to hear about Benny. Oh well. I guess you got to take the bad with the good.

that plus it s now "exeptable"for heavyweights to stand and hug or stand a think about throwing a punch for a few rounds and then throw a couple

Great battle. Doug looked done early but built-up steam as the fight went on. Battle of the right hands but Jones set-up the final right with a sneak left hook.

Great to see two heavweights going shoulder-to-shoulder and fighting at a brisk pace, plus it is surprising, given the nature of Zora's losses to this point, that Zora went the distance with Liston.

I think you're thinking of Machen. Folley was knocked out in 3 rounds by Sonny.
