Bernard Docusen
..kikibalt..right you are, so thanks for the correction. i was going by the most recent post of granberry, and i know he has some very good pictures because he sent me some in a recent private message,
while we are on docusen/robinson...i recall the contemporary write-ups of this fight and his title defense against gavilan, there have been some posts over the past couple of years saying gavilan was his most dificucult fight, but the guys who covered them didn't see it that way then. while gavilan was fast and flashy and , according to sugar ray, took some punches on the chin that would ahve flattened most guy, it was docusen whom they said gave robinsin his toughest match, and the sugarman had to work hard to pull it out in the late rounds.
a friend of mine saw the docusen fight and said docusen had robinson going all out almost all the way. he didn't see the gavilan ones (one was a non-title) so he couldn't comment on them...but he was most impressed by docusen.
more docusen...george costner tried to get a match with him but was turned down. that would have been a great fight between two highly underated and nearly unknown fighters of that era.

I got to see both Docusen's fight live, I see Bernard, who had a very unique style of fighting, he was a boxer, but not in the "normal sense" if you can imagine a guy on a pogo stick, well that was Bernard's style, anyway I seen him in 1949 & 50, against John L. Davis, Milo Savage and Harold "Baby Face" Jones.
Maxie, I seen in 1950-49 & 48, against Enrique Bolanos, twice, Carlos Chavez and Manuel Ortiz.
Good fighters both of them, in this day and age they, imo would have a field day cleaning up what is out there today.
..kikibalt....i remeber clearly a picture in ring magazine of docusen looking exactly as if he was on pogo stick. he was stright up in the air...which i had never seen a boxer do before or since. i thought it must have been just a one time thing that made a good snap shot. now i can put it in some kind of context. thanks for all of you rcommentary.
johm l. davis had a peculiar style, if i rememebr right, always charging forward and making his opponent look bad even if the other guy won.

I seen J.L. Davis a few times, remember when he beat Art Aragon, after losing to Aragon a time or two.Jaclem wrote:..kikibalt....i remeber clearly a picture in ring magazine of docusen looking exactly as if he was on pogo stick. he was stright up in the air...which i had never seen a boxer do before or since. i thought it must have been just a one time thing that made a good snap shot. now i can put it in some kind of context. thanks for all of you rcommentary.

My dad was ahead the first 9 rounds. He told me that h let his guard down with the famous Sugar Ray and that's when he went to the mat. He did get up and finish the fight. Sugar Ray said that was the first fighter he ever knocked down that was able to get up and complete the 15 rounds. He tells this in his book.
His book is almost ready. I will bring it to the Denver Binding company on Monday.

Re: Bernard Docusen-Robinson fight
I recently saw your dad fight the Sugar Man when they fought in Chicago. I know you are proud of your father. Looking forward to the book. Best of luck. Bruce,
The first edition (100 copies) are all personally signed by my dad. Yes, the book will be ready before Father's Day. In fact, I should be ready in about another week.
Can you send me your e-mail address. My e-mail address is
[email protected]
Everyone will LOVE this book -- it is like a diary that my dad wrote in his early 50's. Included are never-before-published pictures.
