They were more like straight leads. Essentially a stiff jab.

There is footage of a Turkish boxer on YouTube who lands jabs and some
nice combos.

I have dropped a guy with a jab in a hectic fight. The dude had some
wrestling so I stuck a jab into his face, and he backed away.

Wasnt going to kick or throw a cross to give him my hips. So I tung him
with a jab, that was enpugh.

Im pretty sure most boxers with a good jab deter alot of tools in the
street. Street fighrting is way over rated, and the punks you find on
it are devious animals that dwell in oppurtunism. Explosiveness and
fitness often are enought to deal with scum bags. But some times the
odds are always way to un-even. Thats when you need a Tyson-esque
animal-man on your side :P

I left out this guy:Irish Bob Murphy. George Radovich used to handle him in the amateurs after he got out of the Navy. George had a bar in Ocean Beach in San Diego called The Arizona Cafe. There were pictures of Murphy on the walls of the place. I asked George why he let Murphy go to Hatfield who managed his professional career. George said that Murphy would always get confused. George said that Murphy thought the bar was the gym and that training meant how many shots of whiskey he could drink before the night was over.

I worked for the County of San Diego with a good ol' boy by the name of Earl Anderson. Earl was a fighter too,and he and Murphy were pals. Earl told me Murphy wasn't much for training ,but because he had a temper and could hit like a mule he was good enough to earn a shot for Maxim's title. If you look at the fight Murphy couldn't hit the slick Italian and lost the decision even though Irish Bob was the favorite going in. Murphy once made LaMotta quit on his stool. Earl told me Murphy had something against Italians. Once they were in a restaurant in the Apple and Rocky Marciano was there. Earl told me Murphy tried to pick a fight with the Rock, but they stopped it before anything developed.

Anderson told me he went into Murphy's dressing room at the Garden before his fight with Maxim and Bob was breaking chairs and cussing everybody out. Earl figured they told the Irishman to go into the tank and that's why he was upset. Go figure. After that Murphy never fought in New York again. He stumbled around after that fighting for small purses in small towns. He got killed in Boston driving his motorcycle in 1961. I'm Italian. If I'd known him I probably would have told him my last name was O'Leary.

Agreed. I would say though, that in general, on the street, the street fighter is king. I place more stock in him than in a trained fighter, be that wrestling, boxing, or karate, if the fight is on the street. & if the trained fighter has little or no street experience.

#1- John L. Sullivan

The man wasn't too shy or boastful enough when it came to his fighting, no matter where the hell he was. He made good on his promise that he could "lick any son of a bitch in the house", as many a broken jaw and bloody trail was left behind him all across America, not just in the ring, but in saloons and on the streets.

#2- Randall "Tex" Cobb

With his martial arts background, as well as his uncanny, almost super human ability to take punishment, one would have to seriously wonder irregardless if Cobb couldn't kick your ass...how much would it even take to not only end the fight, but to make a dent? Mind you, this came from a man who laughed and joked after the most bloody one sided match of the 1980's (against Holmes) that he'd go another 15 rounds with the champ if it would make Howard Cossell quit commentating football as well!

Other honorable mentions:

Chuck Wepner, Rocky Graziano, Harry Greb, Rubin Carter, Jack Dempsey... just to name a few who started out on the streets

Cobb took everything in the ring, but the street is world's away from that. Cobb may not laugh it off if you managed to slam him backwards & he thudded his head against the concrete, for example. Or if you put him head-first into a wall.

Cobb was a tough SOB & he more than likely would've been able to take a licking outside the ring too, but street fights can & do end in seconds. Good street fighters (Most of them, if not all are opportunistic scum as Robinson mentioned) can put you out of a fight before you know you're in one.

dont u recall the street fight Cobb had against the team of local baseball players? they all came with ball bats going to bash Cobb and his friend's head in. All Cobb could say was "We're in for a long night", and he actually won it.

Jack Blackburn. Bad drinking problem..... amongst other things.

Perhaps Stanley Ketchel as well?

Another Argentinian along with Monzon that seems to be a loose cannon was Bonavena.

I think Bonavena met his end outside a brothel or nightclub where he was shot. You're probably right.

"I paid a worker at New York's zoo to re-open it just for me and Robin [his wife]. When we got to the gorilla cage there was one big silverback gorilla there just bullying all the other gorillas. If Mike Tyson offered me $10,000 to see him squashed flatter than a pancake by a gorilla & the only consequence was a loss of my job & possible criminal charges, I wouldn't hesitate. I would pay $10,000 to see it.

Perhaps the gorilla would play it safe, stick & move, outbox him for nine rounds, survive a knockdown then turn his lights out with an uppercut.

Irene,

I have been in my fair share of street fights unfortunately. I have found that being trained, and now as a trained fighter I can handle my own and have done so well in the past.

I just avoid going out these days as it is getting to be such an un pleasant enviornment. I think the notion of one on one is long obsolete. My experiences have been in multiple situations and with weapons. Never a pleasant thing. There are alot of bad people out there :(

Well, sure. As I was saying, if the trained fighter has no experience in the street, I expect him to come up short against the knowledgeable street fighter. If the trained, specialist fighter has street knowledge to boot, the tide can turn in his favour.

its not just what the gorilla would do to mike that would be worth paying $10,000 for, but after he'd squashed tyson its what he'd do to givens that would make it the greatest nights entertainment ever. :o

in boxing, probably likely yes.he'd own em.but in the street,it'd be an incredible battle.

Duran would look like a little kid next to Ali... an ugly little kid, with a ferocious beard... but still a little kid.

Anyway, yeah, I'd go with the typical answers; Dempsey, Liston, Foreman, Tyson, etc.

Knew a middleweight once who got in a street fight with three fair sized guys and KOed the three of them with three punches. During my Police career I was once arresting a bloke who pulled away and started making strange moves with his hands. I dropped him with a single hit without evening closing my fist. Found out later he was some kind of a karate expert. So much for that.

Jeff Fenech won a lot of street fights against men much bigger than himself. Boxers usually do better than martial artists in a street fight because they know better than to shape up in the street. Hit him once and hit him hard.

Unsurprising. Karate is too heavily geared toward deflecting, countering, restraining, & just generally isn't that practical for someone in a street fight. They don't teach you what it is to be hit. They don't teach you about coping with loss of composure when you're hurt, or have been injured but need to continue. In many cases they really believe they do, but the truth is they don't.

If you don't mind my asking, which state did you serve in, Brute? I have a friend in the Force, & my employer (now a solicitor) is an ex-cop.

I agree that it's personality that is scary. Buzz gets that part right. Dagosd is spot on with Monzon. Somethign nasty about the guy that goes beyond the sport, same for Tyson (more spoilt brat, but just as scary).

I'm a lover, not a fighter, but I agree with Robinson that most street fighters are generally jumping the vulnerable and blindsiding anyone who might be a challenge. The odds are usually massively on one side.

He was tougher than titanium & he wouldn't stop for anything. :box:
