At least if he could just get a rematch with Watson..........I'm sure if Ali had won the fight this decision would have been put on the back burner.

Maybe he's just had enough, it must be tough for him living away from his homeland despite his popularity here. Better to finish your career perhaps a little too early than a little too late.

He sounded a little sad about it but he's had a few knocks in recent months, this loss and his dad passing away etc.

Wonderful guy, let's hope he has a happy future, whatever he chooses to do.

Im pretty sure he had the opportunity to get british citizenship but he turned it down as its not his country (i think). That indicates he's always wanted to go back at some point.
Ali is a great guy and one of the quietest boxers Ive ever met. A creit to the sport. It speaks volumes that there isnt one bad comment about the silent assasin on this thread.

Thank you all very much for your kind words.

Believe me, to say Ali was touched when he read them is very much an understatement.

We are having a small get together tonight in Glossop to say goodbye to him and he flies out next week.

He has also agreed to be my best man in 2010, so looking forward to that.

My partner Lisa is currently writing a book about Ali, she's only done a few chapters so far but it's going to be a great story!!!

This is my last post as I am staying far away from boxing now (Think i'm mentally drained)

It has been a hard, but exciting 6 years and I have some amazing memories that will be with me for the rest of my life.

The most important thing to me is that Ali is going home safe and in good health. (Could not ask for any more than that)

I first encountered Ali boxing when I looked over in the opponent's corner and saw what looked like 'Mr T outta the A-team' growling at me to do me in. The bell went (I sharp wish it nvr) and B.A BAR A CAUS went to work on us. He had power, speed and has the will to win. He was me first professional loss.
Good lad, got a good coach to and I wish the lad success and good health. He'll go far what ever he does. Why? Because he is a winner, and, he's got character

Ad give Ali a job even if he wanted one to stay. It'd be security work and he could stay with us here in Darlington till we sorted him somet out permenant - he'd just have to keep Matthew Hatton out, Ricky is allowed in tho

I'm saddened to hear of Ali leaving. Boxing News suggest that Ali was bitterly disappointed to learn that Steve Wood plans to match Mark Thompson for the Commonwealth welterweight title against Craig Watson rather than give Ali an immediate rematch for his old belt. Considering Ali lost on a cut eye and was coming on strong against Watson one can appreciate his frustrations.

Perhaps Steve Wood could take time out from finalising his exclusive telly deal with Channel Mickey Mouse and shed some light?

Bit harsh in relation to the TV deal, its only being signed to showcase young fighters who would otherwise get no exposure. I dont think its exclusive either as Mark Thompson etc... will still fight on sky shows (I think).

Personally I think Ali had made his decision to leave following the Watson fight. He's had lots of ups and downs over the past year, notably his fathers passing. Perhaps he was simply ready for a return home?!

Hi Ben,

The article in BN is not a true reflection on the circumstances and I have been on to BN today to put right ,a correction will be in next weeks paper.

Ali has done well over here but it has been a long 6 years and he was always to go home , things have happened that have made that time come along a little sooner than later but that is life. Ali goes home with high regard from everyone he crossed paths with in the Uk and I am sure he will enjoy the rest of his life.

PS. I know the TV deal is only Central Area level ,but it is a stepping stone for us and gives the kids exposure. If I continue to work hard I may progress to have my own website for 4 weeks!!!

Ali was always intending to go home, I think he had an unlimited leave of absence from the army to pursue his dream.

I'm suprised at the timing, but a good fighter leaving the sport with his faculties in tact is a lot better than a tired 33 year old getting beaten up by young prospects.
