I don't think that Ricky Hatton is pursuing a rematch just to line his pockets.
When he fought Mayweather he was negated, run ragged and finally dismissed with a thumping knockout that left all but the most stalwart apologist realizing that the gulf in class was nigh on unbridgeable. In fact the only question I had in the aftermath was whether or not Joe Cortez's uncharacteristic attention to caution merely delayed the knockout.
Whatever the reality of the situation, I think that a part of Hatton badly wants to prove to himself and his legion of fans that Las Vegas was merely a bad night, an aberration and a second chance would enable him to correct many of the perceived 'errors' that led to such a comprehensive and dramatic defeat.
He might well get it too, after all we know that boxing has a very unique set of rules when it comes to matching elite competition.
If justice was to be served the next man facing Floyd Mayweather in a boxing ring would be Miguel Cotto. But there are two things that Hatton brings to the table that Cotto conspicuously lacks.
1. Mayweather KNOWS he can beat Hatton. Whilst I'm sure that he would be a prohibitive favorite against Cotto, it is a much riskier assignment and whilst I hesitate to say Cotto would win, I do believe that he has the tools to make Mayweather very uncomfortable.
2. Boxing fans would be salivating at the prospect of Mayweather/Cotto but unlike Hatton, Cotto's name isn't transcendent of the sport and certainly unlikely to threaten any box office records.
A few days ago I saw a Ricky Hatton interview on Sky Sports website. as always Hatton was accommodating, witty and happy to share plans for his boxing future.
However I did think that there was a forlorn quality about him and beneath the surface possibly a man who's competitive fire, if not completely extinguished, had been reduced to it's dying embers.
I tried to reconcile that man with someone capable of meeting and overturning the challenge of a Witter or even a Malignaggi and I just couldn't do it.
Don't get me wrong though. In the aftermath of Mayweather, I think people have been insultingly quick to diminish Hatton's achievements as a professional boxer.
In Kostya Tzsyu he defeated a skilled ATG who was bigger, stronger, and the owner of almost disproportionate one-shot clout. Hatton had to walk through fire before pressurizing Tszyu into defeat and in doing so EARNT the right to be called an elite fighter.
Jose Luis Castillo was shot they now say!
It would be a fallacy to suggest that Hatton squared off against the vintage model but Castillio was still competitive and durable. It was a fight that could have easily turned into an inconclusive 12 round maul. Yet Hatton showed his class in setting up a perfect hook to the liver and became the first man ever to finish Castillio inside of the scheduled distance. Something that even Mayweather later acknowledged.
However that was then and this is now. With his dreams of staking a claim to p4p supremacy in tatters, I really do wonder whether Hatton has the requisite drive to get back onto the treadmill?
He may talk about evening the score with Mayweather but based on his first attempt, it doesn't look as if it's something he's remotely capable of pulling off.
A drop back to down to his natural weight-class could also prove hazardous. There are plenty at 140 who could upset the applecart if Ricky is less than his best, and many argue that Junior Witter is better period.
How Hatton responds to this setback could well turn out to be the most intesting chapter in his history.

I think Hatton needs to leave the rematch idea.... he wont beat PBF. He should fight Witter. That will be a good fight and one he can win.

He had no belief to fight Witter years ag - now he has been mashed down by PBF, he won't go anywhere near Witter.
I think the defeat to PBF has ruined him.

Agreed, I think Witter would scrunch him in six or seven rounds.

Quicker than PBF mashed him down into nothing.
That is the reason Hatton would rather fight PBF ( well - one f the reasons) he knows who hits harder!
PBF MASHED DOWN Hatton BUT Witter would knock him out COLD.
Real possibility!

Contrary to poular belief, I think that Hatton would have decisioned Witter if they had fought six or seven years ago.
Not that I'm suggesting that Ricky has ever been a better fighter but his higher workrate (coupled with Witter's former tendancy to fight slightly apprehensively) might have been enough to get the job done.
But now....the only thing I think that Hatton will prove by fighting Witter is balls of cast iron because I the only way I can envisge it ending is with Hatton's concussed, supine form being surrounded by concerned paramedics.

hatton will not face witter EVER.
ricky plays on this man of the people, just one of the lads bullshit far too much. its cringeworthy, i mean you've got this millionaire saying how he's just like the rest of us.
on the other hand witter is a true champion, a throwback fighter if you like, scared of no man, just look at his record in his 10th fight he went in with bergman who was a world rated fighter whose only loss at that time was to tszyu, then he went in with judah in his 18th.
could you imagine precious ricky doing that?

I've seen Tszyu/Hatton scores of times and although there isn't a massive difference between the two, I think that Tszyu looked the more solid and compact figure and he is noticably thicker set than Hatton sideways on.

This really depends what side of the fence you are on. You clearly have much bile and resentment for Hatton so the guy couldn't take a dump without you examining it for some negative angle.
I read your posts over Khan and Hatton and wonder if you even actually like boxing.
I guess someone you would call a Hatton 'nuthugger' would equally say 'ooo Ricky's so great he just wants to avenge the only blemish on his record'.
I think Hatton still sees himself at that elite level and in my opinion a competitive defeat (yeah I know he got KTFO, his arse handed to him yada yada yada change the fornicating record) to one of the best fighters to have walked the face of the earth probably shouldn't knock him down from that level just yet.
So another big $$$ spinners is probably the way to go - I still don't think Witter brings that. Personally I would like to see Hatton fight Witter this year but I can see why he isn't - yet. I think Witter taking on this Hopkins chap over there might go some way to generating US money interest in the fight if he is impressive.

Nonsense, I bet you Hatton weighed a fair bit more than Tszyu on the night. Hatton's camp have said he steps into the ring at about 155.

Plus, Khan and Hatton being talked about as the 2nd comng on Duran an Ali racks me up.

He's right actually. Although Hatton looked the bigger man, in the tale of the tape Tszyu actually was bigger in the chest by some margin.
