One not mentioned in awhile , Rockin Robin Blake.In the early 80s
He was on a roll there very briefly but dropped one to Butterfly Crawley and then things got spotty.

Two Mexican fighters from my neck of the woods:Junior Welter,Battling Torres and Featherweight,"Pajarito" Moreno. Both boys could really punch.

Torres was rushed too fast and was Ko'd by a more experienced Carlos Ortiz. The fight was made in Los Angeles and many of the Mexican fans thought Torres would knock out Ortiz. The other way around. It was hard after that to get Torres to train seriously and his career slumped badly.

Same with Moreno. Fought against "Kid" Bassey in Los Angeles for the title. I believe the fight was in Wrigley Field the home of the Hollywood Stars minor league team owned by the Cubs. Moreno was stopped in three. Wound up ending his career fighting on the short end of purses in small Mexican towns.

Still a lot of talk about those two guys among the "aficianados" of the sport South of the Border.

Mike Tyson - Pretty Much when Rooney Left, he slowly went downhill, and Prison finished him off....

Ruddock - After Both Tyson Fights... "The Hardest Hitter" was just Finished..

Young fought Ali in 1976.

al singer had a short title reign....won by 1st round kayo....lost in first title defense...by...1st round kayo. (won from sammy mandell...lost to tony canzoneri)

Very strange.

Mandell defended his lightweight title by lopsided margin against both Canzoneri AND McLarnin. Both were great, great, knockout punchers but both were close to helpless against Mandell, who was probably the best defensive boxer I have seen.

(There are films of Mandell's defenses against Canzoneri and McLarnin).

Then Mandell gets knocked out in the first round by Al Singer?

Just after he won the title, Al Singer has a non-title bout against McLarnin, who KO's him.

Then Singer is knocked out in the first round by Canzoneri to lose his title.

Yet neither Canzoneri nor McLarnin could touch Mandell.

..berry...indeed...most peculiar. i knew a boxer....club boxer style, i guess you'd say, who fought mandell in a non-title fight in 1927. ring magazine record book names him midget guery, though his name was actually guera, and the midget shortened to midge after he retired. he fought a lot of guys but always said mandell was the cleverest he had ever been in against or had even seen. said he lost every round, never hit mandell with anything that mattered and it was one of his favorite memories...to have been in with a man of that talent, and , as he put it, "to see him up close."

This is the probably the biggest oxymoron ever; but the worst thing that Spinks ever did was BEAT Ali!

Fernando Vargas - He was like Mike Tyson in a way, a big power puncher just tearing through the LMW division at a rapid rate, including managing to get wins over Ike Quartey and Winky Wright. Soon after though, came the Felix Trinidad fight, one of the most brutal wars the division has ever seen, and one where although he came close to victory a number of times, he wound up TKO'd. He recovered well after that loss and managed to re-win the vacated belt, then he fought another unification fight with the Golden Boy. Oscar arguably gave him an even worse beating than Tito had, though he did it in more of a crafty, intelligent way, measuring some of the most vicious left hooks he's ever thrown until he stopped him.

His weight draining seemed to take a major toll on his health. He's mentioned before that way back when he fought WInky Wright he was literally starving himself to make weight and taking nyquil and shit just to sleep on an empty stomach for 1-2 weeks before his fights. To me that was an obvious sign that he should've just moved up to 160 after Quartey if not earlier, at least he would've gotten a lil more time to develop before fighting two awesome fighters at their peaks like with Tito and Oscar, who both had their most impressive victories against him. Couple that with his numerous back problems (slipped discs I believe) proceeding those fights and you see how quickly his prime ended. In a sense it really amazes me that he managed to make 154 so many times for so many years despite it being so bad for his health. He really should've been a Super Middleweight by 2003 and probably a Middleweight before 2000, and if he had gone up sooner in both cases, his prime could've been longer, but then, his back issues still could've been majorly prohibitive in that respect, because it was after those surgeries he had where he seemed to have lost some speed and reflexes. Interestingly enough though, he seemed to gain them back a bit with Mayorga in his last fight, so it seems like my idea of his weight draining wasn't too far off the mark either...
