Ah, much thanks. Didn't realise you were speaking of a current thread. You know you're dealing with hardened pros when Gran's legendary big (wo)man act falls short.
From what I have seen at 147 with his fights with Palomino and Leonard, he was a VERY DIFFICULT TARGET TO HIT...A very good DEFENSIVE MASTER, with underrated chin and was EXCELLENT INSIDE FIGHTER. He was a BETTER INSIDE FIGHTER than fighting long range, and also was VERY QUICK, which was one of his underrated assets. Would give any welterweight or jr welterweight trouble when he was at HIS VERY BEST. I mean, when he TRAINED FOR THE FIGHT, HE WAS A TOUGH CUSTOMER...VERY HARD TO BEATGoodnight, Irene wrote:Getting back on point, how does everyone rate Benitez at 147? How good was he, in your opinion, at his best?

granberry was laughed out of "the greatest thread ever" but what does that matter. Those guys don't know boxing like granberry does.

Granberry,
Your information on Yaqui Lopez in Philly, Saad Mahammad, etc. was great!
As an L.A. gym rat, I saw a lot of great wars between legendary Mexican champs, etc. However, Philly has always had this rep for great gym wars, and I was a fan of most of those great Philadelphia middle & welterweights.
This past Oct. we, Dan Hanley & I, interviewed Georgie Benton, who was inducted as a trainer. Unfortunatly, we didn't have the time that need be devoted to such a great source of history. I loved watching Benton fight, not to mention Bennie Briscoe, Harold Johnson, "Kitten" Hayward, Gypsy Joe Harris, etc.
Hopefully, Benton will attend our '08 WBHOF banquet. If so, we'll be prepared to do it as it should be done.

Benton lost his own career sitting around and waiting.
He was a used as a ‘policeman’ in the overall agenda.
And then his career was over. His years as a fighter were gone.
WHY? Because Carter was supposed to get a title fight (which he then did) and Benton was a dutiful soldier for the people who were controlling things. Carter didn’t belong in the same ring with a fighter like Benton.
This is very interesting. Right after the WBHOF banquet ended last year, most of the boxers & guests, including myself, had rooms at the Hotel. I was with an old friend who helped us conduct the interviews and we went into the bar to have a drink. George Benton, and one of his son's who'd accompanied him, were sitting at the bar.
I took the stool next to Benton and bought he and his son a drink. Earlier in the evening we'd interviewed Benton, and Dan Hanley did a good job despite having no time to prepare. It was one of those on-the-spot things. I jumped in and we pulled a bit more out of George, however, it was what we discussed "off camera" in the bar that validates, in my mind, what you share in the above post.
I won't continue at this moment, as my wife of less than a week has plans for us. I fight with just about anybody, but I don't cross this Brazilian lady.

That was one hell of a story, and it makes much more sense now to me as to why he looked so dramatically different in his fight versus Scott who he outclassed and then his poor showing vs Gregory. I never could figure out why he fought the way he did in that fight as that wasn`t his usual style and he threw almost no body punches either which he normaly did. A shame what happened to him as he had a lot of potential and was a very strong guy with a good head on his shoulders, would you happen to know what Jerry is up to these days and how he is doing by any chance?

The ones in reply to your nonsense about Jimmy Young were GREAT. You were crying hysterically by that stage.

Here is one collins, the snake of boxrec, will enjoy:Collins2000 wrote:Like I said, granberry, everything changed when you started the tough man act. Post some of the replies you got to your boring crap about Young and Ali... That was great stuff. They basically called you a fraud who knew nothing about boxing. Oh, how you cried then. I laughed like fekk as they left you turning, slowly, in the wind.
Rick Farris wrote:Glad to discover this thread. I've always enjoyed learning about Philly fighters. Guys like George Benton, Harold Johnson, "Kitten" Hayward, Bennie Briscoe, Gypsy Joe Harris, and others. Any of those "gym war" stories that are shared here will be appreciated.
What were the main gyms in Philly? I know that Joe Frazier has had a gym, I believe in South Philly? However, during the years of Benton, Harold Johnson, etc. what was the hot gym in Philly, and who was training there? Who were the charactors, etc.? I really want to know.
Granberry, you obviously have a great deal of Philly boxing knowledge, anything you can share would be great.

Who would have known kikibalt, the picture man, is a member of The Religion of Ali.
Here's your hero, kikibalt.
He is really some "boxer," isn't he.
Has a wild look on his face here. I wonder why.
Another gem after he was made to look a complete lying twat.
I see kiki and Collins have the women's club running in full force now.
All they need to do is add the hysterical Stephen Gordon and they'll have a full fledged cyber crock.
Then when Rick Farris, a REAL boxing person pulled him up about his crap, granberry, the bitter old twat, had the gall to say:
Rick,
Did you have a little to drink before you wrote that?
Tell us more about the great Clay Hodges from your fund of boxing knowledge.
My advice to you is--PAY YOUR DEBTS,
and keep the crap coming.
Yes, once granberry started his act his card was marked. Now they just ignore the old drunkard.
So, the moral of my story is, don't worry if granberry calls you an idiot etc, he does it to everyone, even people who have been around boxing all their lives. Because in his tiny mind, safe behind his keyboard, he really believes he is a man of knowledge. Sad and pathetic, really.

He was popular in San Diego because he'd been a Marine at MCRD. I was sitting ringside. Hodges,to me, was a deck of cards ready to be exposed. Jimmy Young is announced in the ring. He'd had 2 fights. He was an unknown. The opening round Young has Hodges down twice within a minute. I'm expecting Young to finish him off in the next round. I tell my friend who's sitting with me that Hodges was nothing. Just then two old guys in suits sitting in front of us turn around and tell me"I've got 20 bucks saying Hodges wins" After seeing Hodges totally dominated in the first round,I tell the old guy"You're on"Rick Farris wrote:My feelings on Jimmy Young:
By the way, I have an old friend who was a Nat'l GG. Heavyweight champ in '67, Clay Hodges. Clay holds two amateur wins over George Foreman, barely lost to Frazier in the '64 Olympic Trials, held at the Singer Bowl of the N.Y. World's fair. Clay also floored Jerry Quarry twice in his losing bid to rep L.A. in the '65 Golden Gloves, that Quarry won in big fashion in Kansas City, KOing five straight. When Clay Hodges made his pro debut, his opponent was Jimmy young. Clay scored an easy decision win.
Rick Farris
It was a 6 rounder. Young doesn't throw a punch for the rest of the fight. By the 4th,I figured the old guys in front of me and my friend had suckered me. At the end of 6,I start reaching for my wallet. One of the old guys turns around and says"Keep your dough Sonny,we knew Hodges was gonna win" They get up and leave laughing. They didn't even stay for the main event. Hodges's next fight is up in LA. against a heavily muscled guy by the name of Kenyatta Huckinbill. He breaks Hodges's jaw and knocks him out. Hodges retired after that fight.

Rick and Kiki, your contributions are appreciated (especially the pics) but trying to "talk down" to Granberry only makes both of you look troll-like.
If you believe that Granberry's links between boxing and the under world are not true, prove him wrong. If you believe that boxing is run strictly above board by the honest, show proof, site examples.
You will not sway many to your side with your haughty dismissal of Granberry's opinons. Granberry is obviously knowledgeable and has been around boxing a long time. Hope you two didn't come to this board to try to make it like the CBZ. There, they bar anyone who doesn't follow the same line of thought. On this board lthere is real discussion between people who don't agree. I hope you both decide to contribute and not try to censure dissenting opion.
