That "ineffectual arm punch" would break your nose.
Picking up an opponent doesn't score points for me in boxing.
If you are a pressure opponent, yes putting on the pressure and continuing it will gradually wear a fighter out, as it did Ali . . .but if you are following a guy around and eating left jabs, missing almost all of your shots except an occasional body punch, you are going to lose rounds until you successfully corner your opponent and let rip. You can't win rounds by just following a guy around.
By this logic Tua should've won a dominant points victory over Lewis . .

Be nice if you could, though. Be a different sport, that's for sure (Norton tried the same trick at one stage with Foreman, whose feet didn't budge).
Dave - 119-111. Did you see Whitaker-Chavez a draw?
I hope Alp & IFF take note of Gran & Dave's responses to me. See? I'm an Ali hater to the fans, & an Ali fan to the haters. The truth, actually, is that I'm balanced just right, & all the rest of ya's is wrong

Dave,DaveV17 wrote:DF, can't you do better than the stereotypical "sticking and moving?" That is straight out of one of the Ali puff bios.
How about Ali was running, flicking ineffectual arm punches while backing away, without a solid base, while Norton was stalking him, walking him down, hurting him to the body?
Ali's body language and behavior during and after the fight should tell you all you need to know about his performance. Ali knew Norton won the fight. He shoved Bundini after the bell for the 12th because Bundini was trying to put on a false show of bravado for the crowd. Ali knew the truth.
Ali's throwing out his arms in in ineffectual, girl-like motions while RUNNING BACKWARDS
THRILLS members of The Religion of Ali .
But running backwards while throwing your arms out in girl-like fashion does not a heavyweight champion make.
The members of The Religion of Ali are so twisted that they insist it is to their hero Ali's CREDIT that Joe Frazier knocked Ali FLAT ON HIS BACK.
Look at this picture, Dave. Members of The Religion of Ali will tell you with a straight face that being deposited in this inglorious position is TO ALI'S CREDIT:

If Ali pulled his pants down and took a sh*t in the middle of the ring, members of The Religion of Ali would excitedly tell you that that proves further that he is the "greatest of all time."

Well granberry, as usual the grand "spinmeister" is at work. NO ONE thinks that getting knocked down by Joe Frazier toward the end of this fight was something special....in fact that is a very normal and expected occurence. It was GETTING UP and REMAINING COMPETITIVE that was rather remarkable.
Late fight KD's by Joe Frazier can be pretty darn hard on a guy.
And why is that so hard to imagine that it would be considered remarkable? Was Joe that bad? I have him in my top ten HW's.
The fact that underated Ali (ok I'm kidding) had Joe hurt early on in the following fight is another fact that is probably more remarkable than Joe knocking Ali down late in a fight. I mean how in the world could Joe Frazier be hurt by those " flicking ineffectual arm punches " as you put it? And how could those same flicking ineffectual arm punches end up bringing down the curtain on Joe in their next fight?
Now those facts must be very disturbing for you as you continue to attempt to convince us that Ali was simply no good. Now don't bust a blood vessel attempting to answer these points. I'm just not yet convinced of Ali's incompetence is all.

Can you really make an argument that Ali was incompetent based on the last few rounds of ALI FRAZIER I?
Read my words and please tell where I am "gibberating". I am open minded if there is reason to be found.
Why would you be concerned what a buffoon like granberry thinks of you?

I'm actually just stirring the pot for concensus sensiblity......and ever mindful of a "learning moment". Not all things are about "me".....at least that's my theory.

Wow that's quite a scorecard. You certainly did score that fight for Norton.DaveV17 wrote:This is how I scored the fight last year.
Round 1 - Feeling out, Ali moving, Norton pressing. No big punches, I scored it EVEN. 10-10
Round 2 - Ali moving and slapping his punches off of his toes. The punches have no effect on Norton. Norton is pressing Ali, landing some solid blows, and even picked Ali up bodily along the ropes. Norton round, 10-9.
Norton 20-19
Round 3 - Norton stalking Ali, hurt Ali to the body. Norton is starting to take control of the fight. Ali is running and flicking a mostly ineffective jab. Norton's round, 10-9
Norton 30-28.
Round 4 - Norton stalking Ali, landing solid shots. Ali doing a little better at times, but Norton won the round by hurting Ali at the bell. Norton's round, 10-9.
Norton 40-37.
Round 5 - Ali is starting to try to hold Norton. Norton is getting stronger and is getting to Ali with the jab then working inside. At the bell, Norton screamed at Ali, letting Ali know that he (Norton) is in charge. Norton 10-9.
Norton 50-46.
Round 6 - Ali's best round, he planted his feet and tried to throw some meaningful punches. Whenever Ali landed, Norton answered back and continued to make Ali miss while pressing him. Ali landed his best combination of the fight, but it didn't bother Norton. Close round, I gave it to Ali 10-9
59-56 Norton
Round 7 - Norton got to Ali big this round, hurting him and keeping him hurt the entire round. A dominant round for Norton that could be scored 10-8, but I scored it 10-9. Norton is dominating at this point.
69-65 Norton.
Round 8 - More of the same, Ali is open for Norton's hook and took a good one late, Norton still pursuing effectively, Ali in retreat.
Norton 10-9
79-74 Norton
Round 9 - Ali looks tired, Norton landing well to the head and the body. Norton is walking Ali down. 10-9 Norton
89-83 Norton
Round 10 - Ali started off well in this round, landed some decent punches, but Norton still landing left hooks at will to Ali. Ali was stunned by a hook late. Norton 10-9
99-92 Norton.
Round 11 - Norton hurt Ali to the body early. Norton landing hooks and uppercuts at will. Norton tired late in the round, but Ali could not take advantage. Norton 10-9
Norton 109-101
Round 12 - Ali starts fast, Norton pursues, Ali lands some of his best shots, but Norton answers and corners Ali at the 1:20 mark. They continue to exchange until the :20 second mark when Ali tires and Norton batters him for the last 20 seconds of the round. 10-10
Norton 119- 111
At the end, it was obvious that Ali knew he had lost, he shoved Bundini Brown when he went back to his corner after the 12th round. Ali just didn't have the firepower to deter Norton.
You might just want to take a second look at that 6th round though....... was that a type-o?

Let's get fornicating technical here, Ali didn't come close to knocking Joe out in any way shape or form; it was a technical knock out that was stopped by Frazier's corner because Joe could no longer see, and even then Frazier still wanted to go out for the round! Even then, I still dont see Ali knocking Joe out...hell for the last few rounds Frazier admitted later that he was fighting on sheer instinct and by shadows, as he couldn't see, hell Frazier was legally blind to begin with anyways.Frazier knocked Ali down, sure. Ali knocked Frazier out.
At least Frazier knocked down a near prime Ali, when Ali scored his so-called "knockout" it was when both men were passed their best, and let's get technical, Frazier was legally blind (20x80 one eye, 20x110 in the other) and had severe arthritis in his back. And even then, Ali said it was like life and death.
Give Frazier his damn credit where credit is due you Ali nut hugger.
In the interest of balance....
I think this is the pic of that one punch that Joe missed in their three fights.

oh and here's the one of that one punch that Ali landed in the same trilogy.

...that's gonna leave a mark!

I have the one of Joe retiring on his stool......but I like him....I have too much respect for Joe Frazier to post that one.

GUYS!
This thread is getting ugly.
Just accept that Ali & Frazier are BOTH magnificent warriors that performed heroics well beyond what was necessary, just to try to beat each other.
I know it's a cliche, but everytime these 2 fought each other, they left a piece of themselves in the ring.
It's because of fighters like these 2 that we are all fight fans & I'm quite sure it's possible to love them both; I certainly do!
