Anyone would think Enzo C had told him.

"Enzo, go out there, and stand in front of him whilst pawing with the jab, don't throw your jab with any authority. Remember, if he tags you with a big right hand, just move back in a straight line, and KEEP THAT BLOODY HEAD UP IN THE AIR."

Macca panicked when pressured, and did everything possible wrong. He just wasn't prepared for what Haye did, and nothing Enzo C could have said would have altered that, he just didn't have the confidence or wherewithall to win. Had he had his Carl Thompson moment, maybe he would have done, but the Swaby loss came very very early on, and Hobson simply wasn't preparation.

Spot on!!!

What the hell is wrong with losing to David Haye.

What is wrong with losing fair and square.

And I actually think Mr W arren is correct Enzo Maccarinelli is good enough to come good again.

That's all well and good, but even if Enzo Maccarinelli HAD fought the perfect gameplan he'd have still got knocked out. You can't rewrite history and Maccarinelli has a history of doing all the things he said he did wrong - chin up, hands down, backed up in straight lines. That's just the way he is.

Can anyone offer any guesses on what Enzo Calzaghe's gameplan might have been?

Going forwards? Enzo gets smashed as soon as he commits. Going back and trying to box? Enzo gets his head jabbed off and then taken off with a right hand. Hmmm... anyone got an idea?

Well said mate.

It does not suprise me that the haters see this as proof that Enzo Cal is a crap trainer

I actually, against what seems to be popular opinion here, believe it is possible for there to be some criticism of Enzo.

Joe is touched with gold. Our nations finest talent for many a year. Enzo has been part of this - I do not doubt he has put in some great work, but Joe is a rarity.

I agree he has improved Rees and Pryce, but they are not exactly our big hopes for rejuvenating British Boxing are they? I hope not.

Rees, lets be honest, is probably as surprised to be where he is as we are. I suspect Kotelnik will send him back down to the level he belongs and he won't rise again.

Pryce - Commomwealth honours are a good starting point, but with this one they also seem the limit. Scrappy affairs over Facey don't cut it.

I have heard big things about Cleverly.... Can never see that. Froch would destroy him. True man against boy stuff.

Then, finally, the big'un, Enzo. Ok, so against Haye, he didn't follow some so called gameplan. But why not? Why didn't Enzo get him into situations in training that made him relax instinctively into certain action during the fight? You cannot replicate fight conditions, but the way Enzo collapsed it was like he had been punched for the very first time.

Joe should have been set on him in earnest. Unless, of course, they all know that would be unfair on Macca as he could never hold his own - which tells it own story.

If you ask me, the improvement in Enzo's stable - Macca, Pryce, Rees and actually Locket - is just a perceived one and more to do with allegedly. He has brought his immense matching skills to bear on improving their records.

Joe, like I say, stands alone.

by the end of the year there will be no champions in Enzo's gym.

He brainwashed Maccarinelli into believing he could easily beat Haye, his predictions were an absolute nonsense, even after the fight they said if they fight 9 more times, Haye would never get this result again. Realistically if Maccarinelli would have got on his bike for a few rounds he might have had a small chance, but standing and trading was suicide.

Rees, done well to beat M'Baye but the truth was in a big arena with tv cameras and Joe Calzaghe screaming at ringside M'baye bottled it. Rees is not championship level, he will lose his title very soon.

Pryce also has done exceptionally well, but if they match him with a class fighter like Jamie Moore, he will get knocked out again, let alone at any higher level.

Joe Calzaghe, undoubted class... but all the years that he's chosen not to go to america might finally cost him in the Hopkins fight. The new teritory puts question marks over him winning, the new weight, the time differece, altitude, the foreign surroundings for the first time he wont be able to prepare at home, Hopkins is one of the all time greats, seeing him destroy Tarver and take Winky apart makes me think he might just outhustle Joe too.

Enzo is a good trainer, good motivator... not a great coach though, not a Manny Steward or a Mayweather

I don't think he'll change now, he is 27 and been doing the same thing for years. Macca has been fed a few journeymen types (I won't use the b#m word as I find it a bit disrespectful) to deal with and has done, but he hasn't learnt anything from them.
Doesn't matter what Enzo Calzaghe does Macca will always be the same animal, the only chance he has of getting better is to get in some serious close fights where he will get hit back.
The thing I can't understand is why he wasn't sparring with other cruiserweights / heavyweights. A few rounds with Herbie Hide would have no doubt been good learning for this fight, and if he is serious about being the best cruiserweight in the world then go looking for some good sparring.
Great post(and I do regret saying bum, figure of speech but a bad choice)

Just imagine, a few clumps from Herbie Hide or even Alex Gurov would have been a good indicator for Macc to get his hands up...if Joe hits him then I doubt it registers!!

They seem happy to stay in the own gym 'sticking to their own' with Enzo as some great sage, im not sure if it really is the best route for a young fighter, they need to learn!
It's piss easy to travel anywhere in the world nowadays and so there is no excuse for not getting good sparring.
Yes, spot on... Haye had a load of good sparring partners, also went to Miami for more sparring.

Enzo let Maccarinelli get slapped around by a lightening quick southpaw super middle... similar to Haye eh? :o

I've been critical of Enzo Calzaghe in the past and I do still think his close relationship with Warren has helped more than anything - with a bit of luck. He is going through the stage that Brendan Ingle was going through in the 90's with Hamed, Nelson, Rhodes etc... again, a close relationship (at the time) with Warren helped.

Having said that...... I was impressed when they showed his gym in action with Richie Woodhall for Setanta.... really impressed! I liked his attitude and what they were doing.

I do think though he should go into some kind of partnership with Ronnie Rush who could bring the fighters some added knowledge. Ronnie was much less known and much smaller time - but he trained two world champions from scratch... that's pretty good. Ronnie has two excellent defensive fighters in Robinson and Jones - its defensive qualities that some of the Enzo Calzaghe boys lack.

Well, I don't mean partnership - but just to get him involved and helping out. My only flaw from what I could see was maybe Enzo is a little overworked with the amount of fighters coming to the gym.

On a side note... any one else think that Adam Booth comes across so badly on TV.

Tell me a trainer in the land who would love to be training

The Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Of The World
The Former WBO Cruiserweight Champion Of The World
The WBA Light Welterweight Champion Of The World
The Commenwealth Light Middleweight Champion

Not bad for the CV is it??
He's also got Gary Lockett WBU Middleweight Champion who is now fighting Kelly Pavlik (WBC WBO Champion) in America in June..

Tony Docherty/Kerry Hope are both bright young prospects too...

Obviously a trainer is only as good as the people in the gym but Enzo's main strength is his mentality and fitness regime - he's like an aggresive little dictator who gets the gym so fit they are puking their guts up....He doesn't care when your fight is he expects you in the gym so there is none of this getting fat between fights that so many boxers seem to do...

He's a class act & nice guy - good luck to him (wish he'd talk a bit slower though lol)

1. Yeah Booth comes across completely arrogant.

2. How much credit can Enzo Calzaghe take if he's exempt from criticism? You can't be responsible for a fighters gameplan if it goes well, but hang him out to dry 'he didn't follow the plan' - if he gets blasted out in two rounds. As someone else mentioned, the whole point of training camp is to school out bad habits. If he's not got them on weights, hasn't got any decent sparring, and isn't ironing out technical deficiencies when under a bit of pressure, what is he doing? I can talk someone through how to throw a decent left hook if we're under no pressure.
Maccarinelli it a fit guy anyway, and I know people talk about his impovements under Enzo C, what are they?

If his job is to say 'go out, keep your hands up, stick a fierce jab out and keep out of the way of Haye's big right hand, maybe we'll be fitter in the later rounds' - I could be a world class trainer. Especially if I can then simply wash my hands of it afterwards.

No weights against a man who is naturally heavier and stronger, no sparring (of any calibre) against the #1 ranked CW in the division, and the world's most obvious gameplan which - after three minutes we all realised couldn't be adhered to - had no backup.

Not saying he's not a good trainer, I'm sure he's up there with the best of them, but to blow smoke up his a*se is OTT. Think Macca would have lost anyway as I rate Haye, but I'd have hoped he could have made it interesting.

Agree with the last comment - no matter what Enzo Maccarinelli turned up - David Haye was winning that fight every day of the week.
